Biog
A tiny midfield playmaker who, from his early teens, had English clubs' academies falling over themselves to woo him.
Although nominally on Celtic's books as a schoolboy, Molloy spent time checking out his English suitors and looked set to join Chelsea's Youth system. But during a Victory Shield U15 international match in November 1998 he broke his thigh bone in a challenge with the English goalkeeper Andy Lonergan and faced 18 months on the sidelines.
Such were his wunderkind credentials that he had been playing for Scotland at a year above his age group (alongside Fotheringham, Prunty etc.)
Molloy then opted for Celtic to undergo his rehabilitation and was rewarded with a pro contract in July 2000. He went into the youth setup and was promptly recalled to Scotland's U16 side. But the horrific injury at such a formative stage was hard for Molloy to overcome. Additionally his small and fragile physique was never likely to win over arch-pragmatist Martin O'Neill, and the Irishman released him in January 2003.
Hibs then offered terms until the end of the season, but with Brown and Thomson in their Youth team it was arguably even tougher for Molloy to break through there than at Celtic. He did play some Youth games but wasn't kept on.
In a piece of rotten luck he joined Welsh cracks Barry Town, only for them to go bust shortly afterwards. Then he moved to Albion Rovers who were in hot water for not registering him properly. From here it was onto Bellshill Athletic and then Thorniewood, deep in the bowels of the Junior ranks.
Molloy demonstrated his determination and courage by playing two seasons in the Third Division with East Sirlingshire from 2005-2007. Sadly injury and bad luck appear to have conspired against him in his footballing career.
