Summary
“I didn’t the see the goalkeeper, I thought ‘Oh I can shoot’… shoot…. GOAL! Yeah!!!”
Kyogo on his goal v Sevco in 3-0 win (Sep 2024)
“Nothing of this was Celtic’s issue. Nothing. Celtic gets dragged into this as being a Celtic/Rangers (Sevco) thing. It’s not. This is a Rangers (Sevco) thing.”
Brendan Rodgers on Sevco’s ineptitude over the away fans ticketing issues (Aug 2024)
“I don’t think Rangers are strong at all”
ex Celtic manager Martin O’Neill believes Sevco need to sign players before they can compete over the season with Celtic
“Stuff of dreams really… It’s about stepping up and knowing that I’m here for a reason.”
New signing Luke McCowan reacts to making his Celtic debut in today’s 3-0 win over Rangers
“The speed in our game was exceptional… The crowd played their part today. We wanted to get four or five, and it could’ve been that.”
Brendan Rodgers (Aug 2024)
Sevco manager Philippe Clement: “Don’t forget about last week, it was the best result in around 4 years for the club, so it’s not that black and white.
“Celtic had 14 shots and we had 13. They had 4 on target and we had 4 on target… ball possession was also equal today between the two teams”. (made up wrong stats by the Sevco manager)
“A great team performance. Everything is strong, performances have been strong.”
McGregor
Paddy Power @paddypower · 7h GOAL! Maeda makes it 1-0. For now at least, but let’s wait and see if the VAR can find a way to disallow it.
joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki: An incredible marker put down today, in what was a mostly one-sided match. Granted, Sevco had the better start and had two chances to take an early lead (and probably should have scored) but once Celtic scored their first goal (which was annulled due to an incredibly marginal & arguable offside), Celtic took the match by the scruff of the neck and took control. So good were Celtic, it was impossible to tell who was man of the match. Bernardo controlled the team so much that some new players might feel in fear of opportunities, whilst Hatate had some great passing, Maeda & Kyogo again scoring wonderfully, whilst McGregor capped the match with another incredible long range goal (albeit with a deflection). Add in some great defending by Scales & CCV, and we have another excellent performance from the team. Admittedly, the defence was ropy at certain points, but having yet to concede a goal in the league so far this season, they are on the right track, and mabye it’s the tactics that leave them more exposed. Really Celtic should have won by far more. A real marker, and maybe already the definitive match for the domestic season.
Chris Sutton: “Celtic outstanding. McGregor ran the show once again. Kyogo sensational Rangers were lucky it was only 3. A total demolition. I’m worried for Rangers…”
Dominik Diamond:The very definition of a comprehensive win. Players under pressure from new arrivals (Bernardo, Taylor, Scales) all had top games and Kaspar gets a couple of big saves at the end to feel part of it! Glorious day and we still have Clement’s post match interview to come. Congratulations to Philippe Clement for winning the “IF WE’D SCORED FIRST WE’D HAVE WON THAT GAME” Cup to add to all the other trophies
Beyond the Waves: Bernardo and Scales were immense. Almost playing like they had something to prove after recent signings which I love to see. This transfer window was interesting. I’m not particularly excited by it but I’m interested
E-Tims @ETimsNet:
The takeway, across the board, from todays game seems to be Rangers have absolutely nothing to offer in the way of a challenge.
To anyone.
They have no glimpse of a lifeline or anything to pin their hopes on. Could be a very long fortnight let alone Season.
John Beaton gave them every possible Advantage award yet denied us 2 clear open attacks for the sake of giving us fouls in useless areas He tried his best to help his mates but it needs called out, abysmal selective decision making.
Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland: Sensational performance from Celtic, if they had to score 6 they could’ve quite easily, men against boys using tanks against tennis racquets, Celtic are fitter, faster & better all over the pitch, not one Rangers player gets near their 1st XI, they’d struggle to make their bench. Paulo Bernardo had some pretty huge moments in the Glasgow Derby last season, but this was the game he truly arrived, an hour of relentless pressing without the ball and pure class on the ball, tremendous performance for the hour that he graced the field. Greg Taylor was magnificent today, he thrives in these fixtures, the space he creates for the team when he inverts and his tenacious pressing is so underrated, a very good passer of the ball too, Kyogo’s goal doesn’t happen without his selflessness. Cameron Carter-Vickers was a colossus once again today, stood up to everything against a big battering ram of a forward in Dessers and had him in his pocket throughout, he’s the best CB this league has seen in a decade and he just gets better and better, his timing is incredible. I get that he needs to take positives publicly, but if he genuinely believes that nonsense he’s spouting, then Rangers are in bigger trouble than you could imagine.referencing a one-off performance against a club from a town with a population of just 5000, who’ve had to win a Play-Off just to stay in the league the last 2 seasons, as some kind of call for optimism is as desperate as it gets, a man who doesn’t understand his environment

Parkhead boss delighted with big win over nearest rivals
Brendan Rodgers has praised his “electric” Celtic team following a comprehensive win over Rangers and declared himself content with the club’s transfer window business.
The Parkhead manager knows there were grumbles within the support as Celtic took time to make squad reinforcements but all was forgiven as the champions ran over the top of their rivals with a 3-0 victory.
Celtic were busy on transfer deadline day but only two new signings saw action against Rangers, with Luke McCowan and record transfer buy Arne Engels appearing as second-half substitutes.
Rodgers declared himself “very, very happy” when asked if he was satisfied with the re-strengthening in the last few days. Defender Auston Trusty and on-loan Barcelona left -back Alex Valle remained on the bench and will be introduced after the international break.
“I think that it’s very, very hard to do everything you want to do in one window,” added Rodgers. “But if you look at the work that has gone into here at the club with the players, not just the players in, but players going out, there’s been so much that we’ve needed to do in order to get the squad to where we want it to be.

“So, a manager will always want a little bit more, but I can’t complain. We’ve done some great business, some great work over the course of the window with the players we’ve brought in, going right back to Kasper (Schmeichel) and all the guys. So, that’s been really, really good. And we’ll need that throughout the course of the season.”
Rodgers stressed that this was only the beginning and his side, with these new additions, can go from strength to strength. It is not what Rangers wanted to hear.
“I think we’re only starting,” he said. “I think for me, the pleasing aspect was the performance. That was what we’d said to the players.
“I wanted them to concentrate on that, because that’s what we’ve always done. We want to always make it really difficult for every opponent that we play. And we’ve seen that today, both with and without the ball.
“It was a fantastic performance,” he added. “I thought we were electric going forward. We’ve scored three and we look at the other chances we had in the game, which was very, very good, but also equally as pleasing is that we were defensively solid and strong right to the very end.
“Overall, it was such a great day for us. It just continues, the quality, the speed, the intensity of which we’ve been playing.”

Kyogo was at the heart of this dynamic performance in the 77 minutes he was on the pitch, scoring his side’s second from 30 yards as he proved he is something more than a penalty box striker. “It’s what you want,” said Rodgers.
“I think you want that from your big players. And I think that confidence and that courage that he has, I think you can say that about a lot of the players, the courage they take going into these games, to play and perform to a high level. And he’s done that today.
“He’s probably disappointed he never got his hat-trick,” the manager added. “But there was the one we had which was disallowed. It would be interesting to see the line on that, because that was a really, really worked goal, how we played through Rangers pressure and broke away and we scored. But yes, he was very, very good.”
This felt like Celtic’s title party in their dear green place – but Rangers are in Old Firm hell

Celtic 3-0 Rangers: All too familiar Old Firm tale – where does Philippe Clement go from here?
It was the first day in September but it might have been May. The final whistle sounded and the Celtic fans erupted. Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin turned and headed straight down the tunnel. Philippe Clement approached referee John Beaton and … shook his hand. It wasn’t the officials that were the problem here. The Rangers manager knew he wasn’t able to get away with that.
Celtic skipper and man of the match Callum McGregor led his teammates round the stadium. Kyogo Furuhashi, who scored once and might have had a hat-trick, frolicked in the corner with the Green Brigade. It felt for all the world like a party and the first leaves of Autumn are yet to fall.
The DJ played Roll With It, with its pointed line – as far as Rangers are concerned – about it being “all too much for me to take”. The Ibrox side look done and the harvest moon has still to form in the sky.
Glasgow, the dear green place, is Celtic’s. Although Brendan Rodgers was at great pains to stress that nothing is won at this stage of the season this was, in the ancient sweep of Old Firm history, a meaningful result. An epic one, even. It nudges Celtic ahead of their rivals in the great Old Firm storyboard – 170 wins to 169.

How appropriate that it is Rodgers who is the incumbent manager when this landmark reconfiguration should occur. He has helped enormously to even things up and now has overseen 15 wins and just one defeat in 19 meetings across two spells. How fitting that Kyogo, his fellow Old Firm talisman, should have done so much to wreak the damage here, scoring from nearly 30 yards – who says he’s a mere penalty box striker? – to put his side 2-0 up after 39 minutes and generally giving Rangers defenders palpitations whenever he chose to run in behind them. Without or without the ball, he was danger personified.
After overhauling them on wins, Celtic are gunning for Rangers’ record of 55 Scottish titles. They posted an emphatic statement of intent here. Start stitching the clover onto the championship flag. This was the kind of result and performance that has attention-seeking bookies paying out early – if they weren’t doing so already.
Where do Rangers go from here? Where does Clement turn? That’s no Old Firm wins in five now. This felt like a must-win game for the Belgian after last season’s tale of woe but he might have bought himself a little time by sanctioning a wholesale squad clear out. One positive is that none of his newest signings was given a run out here. A mercy, possibly. Rangers might yet improve. They must.
What did seem like clemency was Celtic only adding one more goal after half time – but what a goal. Few players will make their Old Firm debuts in such desirable circumstances as Luke McCowan. The new £1.2 million signing from Dundee replaced Reo Hatate with 15 minutes left and just after McGregor had made it 3-0 with another crisp long-range hit. Rodgers noted that playing against Rangers as a Celtic player is a different challenge for “the lungs and legs” but McCowan settled well and showed some nice touches under the watchful eye of McGregor.

The skipper was once again imperious and can now enjoy a proper international break. Rangers, by contrast, will have to sit and stew. They head to Tannadice next, never an easy place to go.
Celtic were giving debuts – record transfer Arne Engels had came on at 2-0 – and making ceremonial substitutions as if it was a late season game, when the title is already sewn up. James Forrest came on for his 500th appearance. Joe Hart, meanwhile, made the half-time draw. There was a continual vibe of celebration, often manifested in the form of baiting Rangers skipper James Tavernier, from kick-off. Well, from soon after kick off. Because, as often happens in Old Firm games, Rangers started quite brightly before unravelling faster than the Green Brigade’s latest tifo display.
The visitors won a free kick in a dangerous area while the last verse of You’ll Never Walk Alone was still reverberating around the stadium. Many inside the stadium seemed unaware the game had even started. It was felt Rangers’ best chance might lie in the hosts simply not being focused enough and it initially seemed like this might be the case. Like drowsy late summer wasps, had Celtic become drunk on success in this fixture?
Vaclav Cerny’s delivered a dangerous looking ball to the back post that was met by Robin Propper. The defender’s header went out of play. It was a near thing. Cameron Carter-Vickers then bent a ball straight out of play as he tried to find Alistair Johnston on the right. The suspicion that Celtic might not be ‘at it’ persisted.

Rangers fans watching at home and in bars had perhaps had another three or four minutes of comfort wallowing in this illusion. A close call ruling out an opener for Kyogo after six minutes due to offside against Nicolas Kuhn, who provided the assist, was the warning that went unheeded by Rangers. Another good move down the right saw Paulo Bernardo’s dink kept in by Alistair Johnston, who hooked a ball back into the goalmouth. Propper slipped, John Souttar couldn’t mop up and Daizen Maeda swept home in front of Tavenier, who will get the blame. However, a lot had happened in front of him.
Kyogo made it two when he picked the ball up in midfield and advanced a few steps with hair flapping before picking his spot wide of Jack Butland from fully 30 yards. Having taken a bit of time to get off the mark, he has now scored six goals in 11 league games against Rangers. McGregor, meanwhile, wrapped things up with 16 minutes left with a stunning left-footed finish from around the same distance as Kyogo.
Make no mistake, Celtic still carry a punch. They still contain a sting. The appetite remains as keen as ever. Indeed, the signs are that they have become even more potent while Rangers fans wait and hope that another fresh batch of signings gel. We have been here before.

Celtic can inch ahead of Rangers in history stakes with a win – and stretch early lead in title race
Backed by nearly 60,000 supporters in the partisan setting of their own backyard, a new record transfer acquisition in their ranks and preparing to play a team against whom they haven’t lost a league meeting of significance for over three years.
Asserting the pressure remains all on the home team is not a deliberately contrary or provocative statement. Rather, it is a measure of just how moderate and run-of-the-mill Rangers have become. Glasgow derby, Old Firm derby, call it what you will: how can Celtic, who confirmed the capture of £11 million midfielder Arne Engels on Friday night, possibly stuff this up?
“People can sometimes assume that when you’re doing well, and everything is going great, that you just turn up and win,” countered manager Brendan Rodgers in his pre-match press conference. “That’s a very dangerous way to think.” He cited the “emotional” nature of a special fixture.
All well and good of course, but under Rodgers it has tended to be a game where Celtic turn up and win. Granted, it’s a derby, and we all know where we are obligated to fling the form book. But Celtic failing to prevail in the first Old Firm derby of the season borders on the unthinkable, which of course creates its own form of tension.

There won’t be one Celtic fan making their way to Parkhead on Sunday who isn’t fully confident of victory. Likewise, there won’t be one who hasn’t fallen prey to a niggling feeling: what if? What if Celtic don’t turn up? What if Rangers can frustrate their great rivals and perhaps even take the game to them, as they did, to an extent, on the last occasion the teams met in May at Hampden.
That, though, finished the way these clashes so often do these days, with Celtic fans celebrating. Adam Idah’s late winner secured the Scottish Cup on the 57th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup win in Lisbon.
There is no trophy at stake on Sunday afternoon. What there is, though, is something arguably greater. Some, including Jose Mourinho, might refer to it as football heritage. Glasgow bragging rights stretching all the way back to 1888 lie in the balance, with both teams currently level-pegging on 169 wins each. As well as drawing five points clear of their rivals with a win tomorrow, Celtic can inch ahead of them in history.
What a blow this would represent to Rangers’ pride. What a stark portrayal of the vandalism wrought upon the club by a succession of hubristic and incompetent owners. Even though it looked like progress was being made on that front, the Ibrox fans have been let down by the current incumbents. Ahead of their trip into enemy territory on Sunday morning, Rangers will be given a rousing send-off by their fans from a stadium they last played at on 14 May against Dundee.
Philippe Clement and Brendan Rodgers do battle once more.

Delayed renovation work continues at a pace in a bid to ensure the forthcoming League Cup quarter final against the same team can take place at Ibrox. But this is the unsettled background as Rangers target a first win in front of fans at Parkhead since 2019. It’s just as well the first Old Firm derby was always scheduled to be away. Surrendering home advantage in this fixture might have tested fans’ patience beyond breaking point, if it isn’t there already.
So much seems to be in the balance at present. So much of Rangers’ admittedly sometimes self-proclaimed identity seems imperilled – how can they claim to be the most successful team in the world when they are not even top dogs in their own city? Never mind the Copland Road stand, an entire edifice is crumbling. Celtic are targeting a 55th title win – the number Rangers reached under Steven Gerrard and have failed to add to since. Both clubs, meanwhile, are locked on 118 trophies.
In the week of a controversy over Sir Keir Starmer removing a portrait of Margaret Thatcher from the hallway in No.10 Downing Street, another changing of the guard could be imminent. Celtic are facing Rangers under a Labour government for the first time since 4 May 2010, when goals from Lee Naylor and Marc-Antoine Fortune gave the hosts a 2-1 victory at Parkhead over visitors who were already over the line in terms of the league championship. That was that kind of inconsequential win on which Rangers must these days sustain themselves.
Their last win in this fixture was as emphatic as it was meaningless – Celtic had secured the league title six days before falling 3-0 to Ibrox in Michael Beale’s penultimate Old Firm match. Todd Cantwell was one of the goalscorers.
He has now swapped the Old Firm derby for an East Lancashire one, with the player expected to make his debut for Blackburn Rovers in this afternoon’s clash at Burnley. He is one in a long line of Rangers players of whom so much was expected and yet who proved so patently ill-equipped to take the fight to Celtic.
Cyriel Dessers is in good form for Rangers.
Cyriel Dessers is in good form for Rangers. | SNS Group
Indeed, is there a single player in the Rangers line-up who could reasonably to be picked over their Celtic equivalent in a joint XI? Not for this correspondent. Cyriel Dessers might trump Idah for the centre-forward shirt in the unlikely event of a merging of forces.
With so much going on player-recruitment wise, Rodgers was remaining understandably tight-lipped on Friday on team selection matters, but Idah is unlikely to start. And who out of Dessers and Kyogo Furuhashi would anyone want spearheading an attack? Manchester City were not contemplating swooping for Dessers, put it that way.
Despite his shoulder seeming perpetually in danger of popping out, what’s the betting Kyogo opens his account for the season and emerges as the match winner once again? It’s vulnerable Rangers whose crutches are at risk of being kicked from under them on a potentially momentous afternoon for Old Firm oneupmanship.CelticCeltic

Belgian believes Celtic bridge can be cut by January after lack of cutting edge costs them dear
Philippe Clement has urged patience from Rangers fans while denying that the gulf between his struggling Ibrox team and Celtic is as large as ever.
The Rangers manager was speaking after his side were soundly beaten 3-0 by the champions in the first Old Firm derby of the season at Parkhead. While nothing is won in September, it already looks ominous for an Ibrox team in the throes of another revamp.
“See you here in May,” was Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers’ arch response to the critics on his return to Celtic last summer amid surprisingly muted scenes.
It was a bold statement and one he came through on. Clement responded to a question about the current gap between Rangers and Celtic by stressing that judgement cannot be made now. “We will see in January,” he said, with reference to when the teams next meet in the league.
Whether Clement, who signed a contract extension as recently as last month, is still here then remains to be seen. It’s certainly hard to see Rangers overhauling their rivals by then, or even looking capable of doing so.

However, Clement, who has spoken of Rangers being in a “new cycle”, is adamant that there are signs of hope. He claimed that what separated the teams was a “difference in efficiency” as he pointed to the bright start made by Rangers prior to being overwhelmed by Callum McGregor and co.
He pointed to two good chances for Cyriel Dessers and Rabbi Matondo early on, although both were flagged for offside.
“You need to be clinical in these games, if we had gone in front it would have changed the momentum,” he said. “We did good things with the ball to create that, but we need to be more clinical in those moments. It was the same in the second half.” Rangers started brightly after half time but they were already 2-0 down. They also had some late chances after Celtic had gone three goals ahead.
Clement turned to statistics while making his point that it was a closer contest than some might have thought. “At the end, Celtic had 14 shots, we had 13,” he said. “They had four on target, we had four on target.
“But you lose 3-0, that’s really a clear result – and a difference in efficiency. And of course, you give them a lot of confidence. If you are 1-0 in front and 2-0 in front, it’s always easier to play. But ball possession was also equal today, 47-53 (per cent), between the two teams. But I was not happy with the reaction after the 1-0. It was not good enough.”
“We are just at the start with a new squad,” he added. “A new team. In that way, there were really positive things in the beginning of the game, but you need to kill off the game then and to score. And then it can be another dynamic. And of course when it’s 3-0, you need to shut up at that moment and accept that you have lost and it was not good enough. So we’re going to work really hard over the next couple of months to be much better in January.”

Asked whether Rangers fans have to be patient, he said it was the only option. “There’s no other choice, of course,” he said. “It’s a really big blow to lose 3-0 against Celtic. For all of us, for the fans, it’s not something that you want. I also think we didn’t reward ourselves in that way. It could have been a 3-2 or a 3-1 or a 3-3 if you have a good, efficient day today.
“But we didn’t reward ourselves,” he continued. “We need to work on that and to work on a lot of other things also. But that’s normal with so many new players and so many young players. Look at the average age of the starting eleven of Celtic today and our team today.
“So the best is by far yet to come with this squad. I’ve seen a lot of good things in training, and in the last few games.”

“Celtic make things happen. Rangers hope things happen.”
Former Ibrox striker Kris Boyd was scathing in his criticism after Philippe Clement’s side were beaten 3-0 in the first Old Firm derby of the season.
Celtic went into the game as big favourites, and the reasons for that were laid bare in a contest that seemed all but over by half time.
Brendan Rodgers’ side dominated in midfield, pressed relentlessly, and created chance after chance, as Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda ran riot in wide areas.
Maeda, Kyogo and Callum McGregor all found the back of the net on a day where difference between the sides was less a gap, more a chasm.
“Celtic are a very good team – they are in such a rich vein of form and they play with confidence, pace and energy,” former Rangers striker Billy Dodds said on Sportsound.
“How many of that Rangers team get into that Celtic team?” Boyd asked on Sky Sports. “None. Not a single player.
“Rangers are in a battle to finish second. There’s nothing there suggesting to me that Rangers are any better than the rest in the league at this moment in time.”

Rodgers has a wonderful record against Rangers and hailed the performance of his side as they returned to the top of the Premiership.
They sit ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference and are five points clear of their Glasgow rivals after just four league games.
“In a lot of attacking moments, we were so exciting to watch,” the Northern Irishman said.
“It’s so early, but I’m pleased with the mentality of the squad. The football and intensity and the speed has been so pleasing.”
McGregor’s deflected strike put the icing on the cake for Celtic, but it was their first-half burst that effectively guaranteed the three points.
“When they play at that speed and tempo we witnessed in the first half, nobody in this country can deal with them,” former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner said.
“Rangers got a lesson today, to be honest.”

‘Rangers couldn’t handle it mentally or physically’
As good as Celtic were, Rangers were equally poor.
There was a lack of composure in and out of possession, as the visitors were overwhelmed by both their opponents and the occasion.
“They could not handle it mentally or physically,” Dodds added. “That is worrying.
“James Tavernier had one of his worst days, for me. If you’re a top defender with all those goals and assists, there shouldn’t be a question asked about you.
“But there is. He found it really tough today. Maeda gave him such a hard time.”
Rangers boss Philippe Clement was defiant post-match, choosing to focus on the positives he took from the game.
“We are a young team, only just together,” the Belgian said. “The starting XI of Celtic have a lot of experience together.
“We have a lot of things to work on – we know. We knew that before the game already. In that way, it’s positive there were good signs in the way we started, but there are also lots of details to work on.”
Clement was asked if he believes his side can mount a serious title challenge on the evidence of that performance, and said he was “totally convinced” they can.
“It’s 34 games to go,” he countered. “Don’t forget what happened last week [against Ross County]. It was the best result in around four years for the club.
“It’s not black and white – it’s grey, maybe dark grey.
“Nobody wants to lose 3-0 but we need to take the right conclusions. The right conclusion is we should have made it 3-2 or 3-3 by being more efficient.
“They had four shots on target, we had four shots on target. There are a lot of things equal but not the result.”

It could have been the game in microcosm.
Fifty minutes in, Celtic leading 2-0, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Cyriel Dessers going for a loose ball.
Carter-Vickers wins the physical battle to such an overwhelming extent that Dessers ended up on the floor with the American looking back at him, in the way you might look at roadkill.
In every department worth mentioning, Celtic won a landslide victory. Rangers won the yellow card count. That was about it.
From somewhere, Rangers manager Philippe Clement imagined a scenario where the game could have ended 3-2 or 3-3.
It was a comment that will draw the same kind of blank expressions you see when historians are asked about the location of the Holy Grail or the resting place of the Mary Celeste.
Celtic maintain derby dominance with win over Rangers
Have your say on Celtic’s win
What did you make of Rangers’ performance?
There was always a probability that Celtic would make this a rout if they hit their stride.
Well, they hit it in a way they haven’t hit it in this fixture for a couple of seasons – and they won nearly all of those previous ones.
Speed of thought, speed of action, mind and muscle – they were streets ahead.
They worked harder, countered quicker. Like vultures, they feasted on the errors they forced Rangers into making.
All the usual Old Firm hits played out – Daizen Maeda’s tormenting of James Tavernier, Callum McGregor’s domination in midfield, Kyogo Furuhashi’s brilliant finishing.
But there was new stuff, too. Celtic lost a big player in Matt O’Riley, but the sharpness of McGregor, Kuhn and Paulo Bernardo made his loss redundant.
Nicolas Kuhn was wonderful wide on the right, a constant source of movement and menace.
Celtic were a class apart. It was all pretty simple for them.
‘Celtic will surely win league at canter’
Media caption,
Scales ‘not the sexiest’ but crucial to Celtic – Rodgers
The rivalry between these teams will always remain, but it’s a thing of geography and history these days.
It doesn’t really transfer on to the pitch all that much, not when the only time that Celtic have lost a game against Rangers in the last 13 meetings was a dead rubber when they’d already secured the title.
We want a title chase, but the evidence of Sunday is that we’re not going to get one.
Rangers have a pile of work to do. They have too many players they still need to move out and too many better ones that they need to find.
They’re in the midst of the dreaded concept ‘The Project’. They need players and they need patience to get on with it.
Finding the former will be as much of a challenge as receiving the latter.
Celtic are too well-coached, too settled, too good. They’ll surely win the league at a canter, but that’s not the testing ground for them anymore. It can’t be.
They’ve proven in 12 of the last 13 seasons that they’re better than Rangers. It’ll become 13 in 14. Great for them, but what else?
Europe. The Champions League. A kindly-enough draw in the new format that gives them a chance of doing something in that competition after so many failures in the last decade, many of the worst ones coming on Rodgers’ watch.

Philippe Clement ‘convinced’ Rangers can still challenge Celtic
Beating up Rangers brought Celtic Park to a dizzy high and, as it unfolded, you wondered if any of their best stuff can be brought to bear on a bigger stage.
That’s the tantalising thought for Celtic folk, that the work-rate and energy and the slickness of their attack can unleash a new kind of Celtic on Europe.
Their fans have a right to dream. Pre-season brought victories over Chelsea and Manchester City and gave them a momentum that they’ve carried on.
Auston Trusty and Alex Valle are in and bring depth to the defensive options.
Arne Engels is apparently their biggest-ever signing and his presence on the bench seemed to draw out the best in Bernardo, who was strong and influential.
Luke McCowan adds to the midfield. Adam Idah is a fine counter-balance to what Kyogo brings.
This looks a Celtic team, and squad, heading quickly in the right direction.
On Sunday, Rangers were a small speed-bump and nothing more.
Celtic are disappearing over their horizon and they need to somehow remain calm in that reality. Obsessing about what their neighbours are doing, and spending madly in a bid to catch up, has led them down some dark roads in recent years.
The clubs operate in the same eco-system but the gulf is large and, on occasions like Sunday when Celtic are so alive, it can become vast.
As tough a concept as it might be to get the head around, Rangers can’t be Celtic’s barometer. That’s not the measure of their worth.
That examination comes across eight match days between September and January, when Celtic must punch up rather than punch down. The message from Sunday is that they might be ready to give it a rattle.

Celtic reinforced the recent Old Firm derby pattern with a routine Scottish Premiership win against Rangers.
Coming in as strong favourites and on their own patch, the champions withstood Rangers’ spiky start before reasserting their familiar dominance.
Daizen Maeda guided in a close-range finish from Alistair Johnston’s cross, as Rangers were manipulated all too easily from a throw-in.
By that point Kyogo Furuhashi had already had a goal ruled out for offside against Nicolas Kuhn, but the Japanese striker would soon add to his bulging derby tally with a precise finish from the edge of the box.
Rangers were fortunate not to be further behind by half-time and started the second period with more urgency, but Cyriel Dessers tamely shot at Kasper Schmeichel when a clinical finish was needed to reignite the contest.
There were chances for both sides in a more low key second period, with Kyogo surprisingly finding the side-netting when played through, and Ross McCausland and John Souttar missing for Rangers.
But Callum McGregor ended the contest with a belting finish from the edge of the box to move his side five points clear of their great rivals with only four league games played.

Celtic hound Rangers into submission
So much of this Celtic performance was a carbon copy of their derby dominance in recent seasons.
The superiority in midfield, blitzing the Rangers full-backs, and another goal from a cutback in a furious first half.
McGregor, usually the orchestrator in chief, was more low key than usual before smashing in the third goal. But, beside him, Paulo Bernardo was everywhere as the Kyogo disallowed goal roused Celtic from an unusual early slumber.
Brendan Rodgers has talked about the quality of their pre-season work to allow them to be better without the ball this season, and that was in evidence yet again here.
They dominated the duels and hounded Rangers, living off their mistakes.
One such incident lead to the second goal as left-back Greg Taylor picked off an underhit ball into midfield before finding Kyogo, who calmly passed the ball beyond the despairing dive of Jack Butland.
All the signs are there that Celtic will be better than last season, both in terms of their evolution under Rodgers and squad depth, given the business done at the end of the window.
That is a terrifying prospect for Rangers and the rest of Scottish football.
Rangers no closer to derby answers

Philippe Clement ‘convinced’ Rangers can still challenge Celtic
If the familiar derby feel was comforting for Celtic, it is haunting for Rangers, who have won just one of the last 12 meetings.
And even that was a victory when the league was already lost.
After a purposeful start in which they harassed Celtic and occupied their centre-backs to allow space out wide, they folded after the disallowed goal.
The visitors’ discipline disappeared, as did the midfield three of Connor Barron, Mohamed Diomande and Dujon Sterling.
James Tavernier was again guilty of switching off at the back post as he lost another round of his ongoing bout with Maeda.
It wasn’t as if Rangers didn’t have their moments. But as has been the case for an age, they couldn’t take them when they did arrive.
Philippe Clement has now failed to win his first five derbies, losing four – a record only matched by Rangers’ first ever manager William Wilton.
The Belgian has emphasised the need for patience as he remoulds the squad with young players.
It is true he has been firefighting since walking in the door 10 months ago, but there is still no sign of a clear style and gameplan.
Rangers need to find one quickly or thin patience among some fans will disappear completely.
What they said

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland: “In a lot of attacking moments we were so exciting to watch.
“We didn’t start the game great, but once we had the goal disallowed the confidence builds.
“Overall, attacking-wise very impressive but also keeping that defensive mentality to keep the clean sheet.
“It’s so early, but I’m pleased with the mentality of the squad. The football and intensity and the speed has been so pleasing.”
Rangers manager Philippe Clement tells BBC Scotland: “Losing 3-0 is very hard, but we didn’t reward ourselves.
“We started as the best team with two clear chances. You need to take these moments if you want to win Old Firm games.
“We are a young team, only just together. We have a lot of things to work on. We knew that before the game already.
“In that way, it’s positive there were good signs in the way we started, but there are also lots of details to work on.”
