  • CCV out injured. He only just came back in training. Taylor still out injured.
  • Dortmund lost 5-2 to Real Madrid after being 2-0 up, conceding all goals in the second half! Dortmund scored 5 v Celtic in the first half in the last match.
  • Atalanta supposedly headed into the match without six of their key players through injury.
  • Atlanta won the Europa league last season, beating Liverpool & Bayer L along the way, and drew with Arsenal in their first CL match this season. A tough team to play anytime.
  • Trusty has an immense game, and really turned heads, as did Scales.
  • Former England defender Martin Keown praised Celtic for their performance at Atalanta and said it “was very reminiscent of the way Arsenal played” during his era.  Not sure that’s a compliment as they were dubbed “boring boring Arsenal” but they were a mighty defensive unit!
  • Alcohol restrictions in Bergamo! Always ways round it.
  • Youth league: Francis Turley after 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in the UEFA Youth League: ‘Deserved more’.
  • As per @scotlandscoeff1 – two wins from our next five matches will see us progress in the @ChampionsLeague .

  • Tonight’s goalless draw has ended a run of 85 consecutive games in major European matches without a 0-0 for Celtic, with their last 0-0 draw coming against Benfica back in September 2012 in a UEFA Champions League match.
  • Celtic have kept a UEFA Champions League clean sheet for the first time since September 2017 in a 3-0 win over Anderlecht, ending a run of 18 games without one in which they shipped 51 goals.
  • Mario Pasalic had six shots without scoring for Atalanta tonight, the joint most by an Atalanta player in a UEFA Champions League match without finding the net, along with Duván Zapata against FC Midtjylland in December 2020.

Summary

“It’s nothing to do with football, and if you do keep doing it then you show that you don’t really care. You don’t care for the team, the support and the club because the club are ultimately getting fined as well. If you do it, you are clearly showing you aren’t worried about your own club – you’re only worried about yourself.”
Brendan Rodgers a week earlier on Pyro displays…

“A pragmatic coach, it’s a different coach. I’m a different person,”
Brendan Rodgers prematch

“We can’t lose belief that we are a good side….We need to be together and resolute… We’re determined to put it right. The boys are feeling good, and we’ve arrived here ready.”
Callum McGregor prematch

“I’m not sure whether that was pragmatic enough for people tonight.. I don’t know!”
Brendan Rodgers says Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Atalanta will give the players a lot of belief in the Champions League

Kasper Schmeichel:  “We took a more pragmatic approach tonight. Fewer risks in the build up”

Jouranlist Graham Spiers @GrahamSpiers · 2h What a defensive performance from Celtic. A magnificent Champions League point claimed in Italy.

joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
Taking in that Celtic were missing our first choice centre half CCV & left-back Taylor, whilst fellow defenders Valle & Trusty were untested, and Schmeichel was a freebee discarded by his last club, then it’s incredible that Celtic did not conceded last night against one of the best performing teams this past year.

El Salto of KDS:
Great performance, no one could say we didn’t deserve a point
We hung on in the 1st half but the longer the 2nd wore on, the better we got
Kept a defined shape the whole game and when our two centre halves play like that it’s difficult to break us down
Minor quibble would be how easily we gave up the ball in midfield at times, but overall a great team performance
Two home games now, get 4 points from them we’re looking good

Henrikstan of KDS:

In the days leading up to tonight’s game, I had such little confidence that I’d have accepted a sacrificial 3-0 loss. I couldn’t be happier to be dead effing wrong.

Not only our first Champions League clean sheet since we beat Anderlecht in 2017, but I’d argue our best European away result since drawing at the Camp Nou (twice) back in 2004.

Before tonight our away record in this competition was P37 W2 D4 L31. Embarrassing defeats to the likes of Rosenborg, Aalborg and a 10-man Anderlecht. Utter thrashings by Barcelona twice, PSG, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. So to bounce back from a 7-1 annihilation in Dortmund, to hold the Europa League holders to a 0-0 draw is beyond impressive.

Trusty immense. Valle excellent. Schmeichel, Johnston and Scales very solid. McGregor and Kuhn did some good dirty work, even Palma played his part as a sub.

Sure we needed a bit of luck, as demonstrated by Atalanta becoming only the 2nd Champions League team since 2008/09 to have 20+ shots & 50+ touches in the opposition box without scoring. But how resolute our defence was, it meant Atalanta became more and more desperate as the game went on.

6 more points and we’re in the land of the top 24.

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland ·  What a performance, ugly as hell, but the determination of warriors, Trusty & Scales were immense, as was Johnston, Valle, & Schmeichel, as well as Nicolas Kühn. That’s Celtic’s second ever clean sheet away from home in the Champions League, ironically enough both under Rodgers.

Liam Kelly @cfcliamk96 · 2h Outstanding result. Maybe we have finally done some of that much spoken about learning. Tonight should put to bed the claim that we can’t compete, might not always get the result but we can always make it competitive Kuhn was brilliant as were the centre backs

Hail Hail History  @hailhailhistory · 2h A great night for Celtic. It’s the Bhoys’ third 0-0 draw in Italy – and arguably the most important because the others saw Celtic exit the tournament anyway. There was a maturity to this performance; not ultra defensive but also not pressing when not needed.

Etims: EVERY player involved, all 16 of them gave their absolute best BUT….Scales and Trusty. Outstanding. Before Dortmund game many/most of us thinking….we can take something tonight….pumped 7-1. Before Atalanta game many/most of us thinking….we are gonny get a doing tonight….draw 0-0. It’s a funny old game Saint!  As for Brendan…after all the criticism following Dortmund pumping and most of it fully merited….get yir baws oot big time tonight and Lord it over every cunt with your greatness!  Rode out luck a bit the first half but second half we grew in confidence as a defensive unit and they had very little clear chances. Outstanding team performance

Brendan Rodgers questions if Atalanta draw was ‘pragmatic enough for people’ in message to Celtic critics

Celtic boss has say after impressive 0-0 draw in Bergamo

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes his players can take major confidence from a clean sheet in Italy as he hailed their courage in bouncing back from the heavy defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Rodgers’ side held Europa League champions Atalanta to a goalless draw in Bergamo three weeks after conceding seven goals in Germany. Celtic had to withstand some periods of sustained pressure but they looked comfortable for much of the final quarter before a late flurry from the home side in stoppage time.

Rodgers pointed out they had already matched last season’s Champions League tally of four points with five matches left in the new format, starting with the visit of RB Leipzig on November 5.

“It gives them the confidence that they can defend against a top team,” said Rodgers, whose side kept their first clean sheet at this level for seven years. “I’m not sure whether that was pragmatic enough for people. I don’t know, but we go out in every game to be structured and defend well.

“You know you’re going to get pushed back. But I think the confidence that it gives you when you can defend against the very best teams, that level and that concentration, then it will give them a huge boost.

“The concentration in the game was superb and you need to have it with the talent that they have, you’re talking about the highest goalscorers in Italian football.

“So to come here, play with that concentration, that commitment and still carry a threat when we had the ball was very, very pleasing. The players showed great courage, concentrated on what it is they had to do, defend the box well, shift, slide and it was a really, really good point for us.”

Celtic looked more compact in midfield with Arne Engels in particular providing more support for his back four along with Callum McGregor and Rodgers felt his players took lessons from that night in Dortmund.

“I mentioned before that sometimes games like that are great games to learn from,” he said. “If you look at Borussia Dortmund (against Real Madrid on Tuesday) night, they conceded five goals in the second half. It’s just the level.

“I never doubted the players and the mentality. We responded straight after that game and won our next game. Then we come away to a team that are, so, so efficient going forward with the quality they have, the power that they have.

“For our players to concentrate, stand up and fight and have that dignity in the performance, I was so proud of them.”

Celtic were again without the injured Greg Taylor and Cameron Carter-Vickers but recent signings Alex Valle and Auston Trusty delivered their best performances since joining.

Rodgers said: “Auston, made some big, big headers. (Liam) Scales has been doing that for a long time, defends the box so well. For a young player, Alex coming into this level, just needs to tidy up with the ball, like the team does, at times.

“I thought we played through their press really well at times, got into some really good positions. Then we get a little bit excited and we give it away, but that’s just experience. That’s taking steps at this level where you can then slow the game, change the rhythm of the game and retain the ball a wee bit better.

“Defensively, absolutely brilliant, concentrated. The two boys coming into the back line were outstanding. But as was the team, they defended very well.”

Celtic withstand Atalanta pressure to secure draw

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon says the team’s gutsy goalless Champions League draw at Atalanta delivered “one of the best results of Brendan Rodgers’ career”.

Following a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, pressure was on Rodgers to show he could orchestrate a resolute defensive display away to the Europa League holders.

And the 51-year-old’s tactical tweaks paid off as the Scottish champions held firm to record just a second ever away clean sheet in the competition.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Lennon said: “They have now proven they can go away from home and dig out a result.”

Meanwhile, Celtic boss Rodgers hailed his team’s mental resilience to respond by shutting out the Serie A’s top scorers.

“The concentration in the game was superb,” he said. “The players showed great courage. I never doubted them and their mentality.

“I think if you look at our opening three games, I’m so, so happy to have four points. That’s equal with what we had last year, so with five games to go hopefully we can add to that.”

So, what changed?

Rodgers faced intense criticism in the aftermath of the Dortmund mauling and a debate about whether he was willing to adapt dominated the build-up to Wednesday’s game.

Based on his pre-match comments, there was little to suggest he would change his European approach, which he has passionately backed.

“My coaching has always been aggressive. And until the day I finish, it will be aggressive,” he said on Tuesday.

Post-match in Bergamo, he joked that he was unsure whether the performance “was pragmatic enough for some people”.

Celtic certainly had to be aggressive in their defensive work, but it was lacking from their attacking display.

In no way is that a criticism, though, as the Glasgow side did what they had to do to get a priceless point by turning the dial down on their usual relentless forward play – and the numbers back that up.

In comparison to the chastening 7-1 defeat in Dortmund, Celtic had less of the ball (47% down to 34%), fewer shots (nine to four) and half as many touches in the opposition box (12 to six).

The numbers in both games also show the quirks of stats, given Atalanta failed to score with an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.33, while Dortmund smashed in seven with an xG of 2.64.

“We had to learn from the Dortmund game and defend for our lives,” Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel told TNT Sports.

“To come here and get a point is a good point. We took a more practical approach in this one and took fewer chances in our build-up due to their man-to-man system.”

The oddity of the xG figures at Atalanta and Dortmund perhaps highlight just how devastating the Bundesliga side’s finishing was in Germany, but Schmeichel avoided his goal being breached in Bergamo by pulling off six saves.

The four-man defence in front of the Denmark goalkeeper will rightly be at the forefront of the plaudits, though, particularly centre-back pairing Liam Scales and Auston Trusty.

In the absence of first pick Cameron Carter-Vickers, Scales and Trusty defended resolutely by making 24 clearances between them.

“Scales and Trusty were outstanding,” former Scotland forward James McFadden said on BBC Sportsound.

“The two of them didn’t panic. Atalanta asked a lot of questions and Celtic had the answers.”

Full-backs Alistair Johnston and Alex Valle, continuing in the place of injured Greg Taylor, also impressed.

Meanwhile, Adam Idah gave the team more of a focal point at the other end and Reo Hatate provided more energy and industry in midfield.

With arguably their two toughest Champions League games out of the way, Celtic can now look forward to back-to-back home matches against RB Leipzig and Club Brugge with four points already on the board.

“So many moments in that game, it felt like the pressure was similar to the Dortmund match,” former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart said on TNT Sports.

“Dortmund got out of control very quickly, but Celtic could deal in the chaos, win the big headers, get a little bit of luck, and some big saves from Schmeichel.

“Once it got through to 70 minutes it felt like Atalanta ran out of ideas. Celtic as a complete squad, brilliant effort.”

BBC Sport Scotland in Bergamo

A terrific defensive display brought Celtic an important Champions League point as they held last season’s Europa League winners Atalanta to a goalless draw in Bergamo.

Having lost all previous seven matches on Italian soil in this competition, Celtic resisted periods of immense pressure from the hosts to take a significant step in their bid to reach the knockout stage.

Kasper Schmeichel made some excellent saves and Atalanta wasted a number of good opportunities, but the defensive discipline of the Scottish champions ultimately frustrated the Serie A side.

After two tough away matches, Celtic now have back-to-back home games against RB Leipzig and Club Brugge with four points in the bank, while next up for Atalanta is a trip to Stuttgart.

Celtic’s fortunes could hardly have fluctuated more wildly across their opening two Champions League matches – the high of a tremendous 5-1 home win against Slovan Bratislava on matchday one, followed by a chastening 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

The Scottish champions looked a far more compact team than the ragged outfit that were picked apart in Germany as they rebounded from that loss by keeping just their second ever away clean sheet in the competition.

Atalanta clearly identified defending crosses as a weakness in their opponents and spent the first half bombarding the Celtic box with deliveries from wide on both flanks.

Mario Pasalic was on the end of many of them and saw a header crash back off the crossbar with Schmeichel beaten.

The Danish goalkeeper had earlier produced a great stop to deny Ademola Lookman, and made a brilliant save to deny Mateo Retegui as the home side came on strong at the end of the first half.

Celtic were defending well without having much opportunity to break out, though Nicolas Kuhn might have done better after outpacing the Atalanta defence and breaking into the box before being crowded out.

Scoreless at half-time was a solid foundation on which to build for the visitors, and they almost had the dream start to the second period when Alex Valle’s deflected strike had to be tipped over by Marco Carnesecchi in the Atalanta goal.

The home side were soon cranking up the pressure again and Marten de Roon’s strike from the edge of the box drew a good save from Schmeichel.

Kyogo Furuhashi came off the bench and got in behind the Atalanta defence, only for his lobbed effort to drop the wrong side of the bar.

Atalanta continued to dominate the ball, but Celtic’s sheer doggedness in defence frustrated the life out of them. The visitors held on to take a well-earned point and the acclaim of their travelling fans who applauded a job well done.

Celtic ‘showed courage’ in Atalanta draw – Brendan Rodgers

“An assault on your spirit” was how Brendan Rodgers described that walloping in the Westfalenstadion. The manager was bullish in his insistence he would not compromise his attacking philosophy for a more pragmatic style against the bigger guns in this competition.

This was a different Celtic though, a more resolute and organised unit than the side that crumbled against Dortmund.

Adam Idah starting ahead of Kyogo to lead the line was a tactical switch from Rodgers, with the Irishman offering himself up for direct balls when Celtic needed to relieve the pressure and get themselves up the pitch.

In the absence of defensive lynchpin Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales and Auston Trusty stood up with towering displays at the heart of the defence. Those two were standouts in a tremendous collective effort.

The midfield trio of Callum McGregor, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate put in tireless shifts, and while the team’s use of the ball could have been better at times, they eliminated the type of individual errors that proved so ruinous in Dortmund.

For too long Celtic have been a soft touch away from home in Europe, but Rodgers may finally have struck upon a gameplan that makes them an altogether more resilient side away from the comforts of Celtic Park.
Atalanta frustrated by resilient Celtic

Atalanta made European football sit up and take notice when they embarked on that epic Europa League run last season that took them all the way to the trophy.

They look very comfortable at Champions League level, having drawn at home to Arsenal and dispatched Shakhtar Donestk in their two previous European matches.

What they lacked here was a killer instinct. With the amount of possession, territory and good chances they had, they will wonder how they failed to break Celtic down.

Much of that is down to an excellent defensive display from the Parkhead men, but having been similarly frustrated against Arsenal on matchday one, the Italians will need to adapt and find new ideas against sides capable of absorbing pressure if they are to go on another memorable European run this season.
Match stats

Celtic have kept a Champions League clean sheet for the first time since September 2017 in a 3-0 win over Anderlecht, ending a run of 18 games without one in which they shipped 51 goals.

Although they failed to score in the first half, Atalanta accumulated a total of 1.71 xG, the fourth most by a team in the first half of a Champions League game this season. Indeed, two of those four highest have been against Celtic, with Borussia Dortmund doing so on 1 October (2.1).

Celtic attempted four shots in this game, their lowest total in a single match in the 2024-2025 Champions League.

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has made six saves in each of his last two Champions League appearances. Tonight he became the first Celtic goalkeeper to make as many as six saves and keep a clean sheet in a Champions League game on record (since 2003-04).

The goalless draw has ended a run of 85 consecutive games in major European matches without a 0-0 for Celtic, with their last 0-0 draw coming against Benfica back in September 2012 in a Champions League match.

Atalanta are just the second team on record in the Champions League (2008-09 onwards) to have 20+ shots (22) and 50+ touches in the opposition box (54) and not score a goal, along with Paris SG against Borussia Dortmund in last season’s semi-final second leg (30 shots, 50 touches in the opp. box).

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells TNT Sports: “If you watched last night, Dortmund concede five goals in the second half. It’s such a high level, games can get away from you. That was a sore one for us [7-1 in Dortmund], it was hard to take, but this is a real honest group of players who have come here to make life difficult for Atalanta.

“Atalanta are a very physical team, a very aggressive team, and at times you have to play through that press into your front man. There will be a lot of individual duels, one-on-one.

“You hear a lot of things about strategy. We go into every game looking to defend well. We conceded early goals in Dortmund which spooked us because we weren’t compact enough.

“We go into every game looking to be compact; sometimes that’s pressing high, sometimes in that middle third and sometimes in the defensive third.

“It’s not Russian roulette football. I wouldn’t be a very wise coach, or stood here today if that was how I coached.”

Will Celtic adopt a more cagey approach after their 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund?

At Tuesday’s media conference Brendan Rodgers fielded a few questions on that topic.

Here’s a taste of what he said…

“I started coaching over 25 years ago, and from the very beginning my coaching has always been aggressive. And until the day I finish it will be aggressive.

“I’m also respectful that where you play against teams at a certain level, certain opponents, you have to really look at their strengths.

“But don’t say I don’t do that in every game, because I do, no matter what team we are playing, whether it’s in Scotland or in the Champions League.

Speaking to some of the travelling Celtic fans, it’s fair to say they come here in hope rather than expectation of a positive result. The drubbing in Dortmund has certainly dented confidence and they face another tough test in Atalanta.

The good news is after this two of the hardest games in this league phase will be behind them and if Celtic can somehow eke something out of this game, their bid to reach the knockout stages will be in good shape.

‘The insurmountable wall and the bus’: How the Italian media reacted to Celtic’s ‘bitter’ draw with Atalanta

By Graham Falk
Sports Writer

Published 24th Oct 2024, 09:22 BST

A battling Celtic performance helped them claim a valuable point in the Champions League
Celtic delivered a stirring display to pick up in important point in this season’s Champions League last night, securing an impressive 0-0 draw against Atalanta in Bergamo on matchday three.

Thrashed 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund on their last outing in the Champions League, Celtic fans would have been forgiven for having some trepidation heading into the game in Bergamo.

In the end though, it was a resolute Celtic defence that deservedly took the headlines on Wednesday night, with outstanding performances from centre-back pairing Auston Trusty and Liam Scales helping the Hoops blunt Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. The draw puts Brendan Rodgers’ side on four points, and keeps their place in the League Path playoff spots.

The Celtic team were hailed by the travelling support crowd after their battling display, but were also given praise by some section Italian media in the aftermath of the game – though not all of them were quite so complimentary about their strong defensive display against the Serie A oufit.

We look at how the Italian media reacted to the game:

Bergamo based newspaper primabergamo.it were left frustrated after Europa League champions Atalanta were unable to break the Celtic resistance, calling it a ‘bitter draw’. They singled out one Celtic star for praise though, saying: “Atalanta were superior but wasteful, (Kasper) Schmeichel saved everything.”

They added: “The Nerazzurri played a great first half, creating several excellent goal opportunities but in the end only managed to snatch a 0-0 draw against the Celtic team. Judging by how the Scottish fans greeted the final whistle, it is clear that they were more than satisfied with the final result and how they lived the challenge with fear. After all, in football goals and results count: La Dea failed to score, so the point is taken and brought home.

Leading Italian sports newspaper Il Corriere Dello Sport went with a similar theme, but brought into question a second half decision made by Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini: “Five clear goal-scoring opportunities, a crossbar, over 60% possession. However, Atalanta was unable to break the Scottish catenaccio (door-bolt), despite all the changes decided by Gasperini who unexpectedly removed the top scorer early. Why did you take Mateo Retegui off after 58 minutes?

“Once upon a time, people turned up their noses when talking about the Italian-style football, in relation to the hyper-defensive tactics used by some Italian teams. The Scottish version, systematically applied by Celtic in Bergamo, earned a golden point for Rodgers’ team, who were so shocked by the seven goals conceded at Borussia Dortmund, that they erected an insurmountable wall at the Gewiss Stadium.

“Atalanta would have won on points, but football is not boxing and, above all, when you dominate games like this far and wide without being able to get through, it is better to draw than perhaps suffer a defeat at the last minute.”

They added; “Celtic were impervious to puncture. Gasperini unexpectedly replaced Retegui and Raoul Bellanova in favour of Lazar Samardzic and Charles De Ketelaere. The Serbian had no impact, the Belgian played well, but neither managed to break through the bus placed by Celtic in front of the defence.”
