Summary
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “It’s one of those ones where you can be more comfortable in the game if you get those early goals with two massive chances in that first period of the game. But it was job done. We controlled the game, created chances, should have had more goals and didn’t concede. So we have to be happy.”
Dundee manager Tony Docherty: “I thought the boys deserved a clean sheet for the amount of work they put in out of possession. I think the penalty is really soft. I think there’s a foul that leads up to it on Mo Sylla. I don’t know why they don’t pick that up. I’ve seen it back.”
fatboab of KDS:
Just in from what was a very dull night until the first team came on.
First half could have been a lot more enjoyable if Kyogo had scored either of the two absolute sitters in the first five minutes, but it wasn’t to be, and it settled in to an exhibition of horseshoe football of the dullest kind. All four wide men that started are not of the quality required. Ralston, Taylor, Yang and Palma can go anytime they want.
Bit disappointed with Engels and McCowan too, neither of whom shone.
Only plus in the first half was seeing CCV back at the heart of our defence.
We obviously upped a couple of gears when the big boys came on, and got the win we needed, but it’s clear as day that our squad is not capable of dealing with that many changes to the starting line up.
All in all , a very good night with skint Huns getting beat and mini Huns dropping to bottom of the table.
But we need to get better alternates if we want to rotate.
ETims: FT #Celtic 2 Dundee 0 Not the greatest of performances but still an easy win. Could/should have won by 4 or 5 goals if Kyogo took his chances. Another 3 points and top of the league. Celtic and Aberdeen both on 28 points after 10 league games. Celtic and Aberdeen both now 9 points clear of the Zombies. The Zombies announced losses of £17m in their annual accounts yesterday. The Zombies are skint and rather shite. Marvellous.

Celtic rely on bench to claim 2-0 win over Dundee
When you want to make a breakthrough, who you going to call? Alistair Johnston was an unlikely scorer once again, the Canadian international striking for the second time in successive games to put Celtic on the way to a not-always straightforward 2-0 win over Dundee.
The full-back had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes before he was in the right place at the right time to turn in Hyunjun Yang’s deflected cross on the hour mark. It was a quick return after Brendan Rodgers had signalled for his A-team. Johnston was one of three players – Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda were the others – brought on just ten minutes into the second half where the Celtic manager had been treated to more of the same from his side. There was certainly more wastefulness, Kyogo Furuhashi being one of the chief culprits. But returning Dundee ‘keeper Jon McCracken was also busy making a point. One save from the Japanese striker was breathtaking.
McCracken could not do anything about Johnston’s opener, nor could he be expected to stop a penalty from Arne Engels just four minutes later after Antonio Portales had bundled Kyogo to the ground before seeing the on-field penalty decision ratified by a VAR check. Engels made no mistake.
Suddenly everything felt a bit brighter around Parkhead although perhaps the most telling reaction of the evening was not because of anything that happened on the pitch. News of a late Aberdeen goal against Rangers was greeted with enthusiasm by home fans, even if it meant their team sharing the lead of the Premiership with the Pittodrie side.

It was all sweetness and light at the end. Things had begun to sour towards the end of the first half, most notably when Luis Palma allowed the ball to run out of play on the main stand side of the pitch. An almighty cacophony of jeers greeted this mistake from a player who was otherwise one of Celtic’s better performers. Moments later the half-time whistle blew and somehow Dundee were clinging to a 0-0 draw at a venue where they hadn’t won since two goals from the late Fabian Caballero as far back as 2001.
At half-time the last time they were here in February they were trailing 6-0. Hopes were understandably high among Celtic fans that they might see some goals. Despite the hosts’ domination, despite their ball possession, it was remarkable that Celtic ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel was forced to extend himself to a greater degree in the first half than opposite number McCracken.
It was just one save but it was a good one, low to the Dane’s right from a Portales snapshot after Fin Robertson’s free kick just two minutes in. Normal service was resumed thereafter.
It might well have been 6-0 at the interval here again except Celtic had not brought their shooting boots. That was most notable in the case of Kyogo, who was first thwarted by a good block from McCracken and then managed to roll the ball past the ‘keeper’s far post when he had only had to pick his spot.
As well as nearly scoring, Portales’ interventions prevented about three certain goals in a first half where Dundee, as expected, had to earn their corn in defence. Was this to be their day? Well, no was the answer. But they can take a measure of pride from some stout defensive work.

Celtic continued their unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership season – and stay level with Aberdeen at the summit – after an ultimately comfortable victory over Dundee.
It took Brendan Rodgers’ side 60 minutes, and three changes, to get going at Parkhead as Alistair Johnston made it two goals from two games by tapping home Yang Hyun-Jun’s cross.
Arne Engels made it two seven minutes later when he calmly converted from the spot after Kyogo Furuhashi won a penalty.
And the league leaders saw it out from there against a Dundee side who have now just won twice in 10 and slip to 10th place.
All the latest Celtic news
All you need to know about Dundee
Dundee started on the front foot, winning a free-kick just outside the Celtic box, and although the first attempt was headed clear by Auston Trusty, Kasper Schmeichel had work to do to keep out the rebound.
From that point on, Celtic enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first half and watched as chance after chance came and went to leave it goalless at the break.
Brendan Rodgers rung the changes early in the second half, with Luis Palma, Anthony Ralston and Paolo Bernardo making way for Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Johnston.
Just a few minutes later, it was right-back Johnston who made the breakthrough for the reigning champions as he tapped in from Yang’s pass.
Engels made it two from the spot after Antonio Portales was adjudged to have clipped Kyogo in the box as he was racing through on goal.
The Belgian midfielder sent his spot kick straight down the middle as Jon McCracken dived to his right.
The chances kept coming for Celtic and, although they couldn’t find the back of the net again, the two-goal cushion was enough to secure all three points.
Celtic changes make the difference
Rodgers acknowledged prior to this that changes would be necessary as his side deal with a hefty fixture schedule.
He made six changes to the side that beat Motherwell 3-0 on Sunday, including swapping right-back Johnston for Ralston and opting for Bernardo over Hatate in the middle of the park.
Despite 13 shots and an xG of 2.24 in the first half, Celtic just couldn’t break the deadlock. At the start of the second period, they once again peppered the Dundee box with chances that didn’t come to anything.
That’s when Rodgers brought on the big guns – Johnston, Hatate and Maeda, who made an immediate impact.
A real positive for him will be knowing he has so many gamechangers within his squad but there will be a worry that the squad players seemed unable to deliver.
Dundee disappointment continues
After the weekend’s disappointment of dropping three points from a winning position, there will be similar feelings in the Dundee dressing room after that first half at Parkhead.
Dundee held off Celtic for 60 minutes, but that doesn’t prevent Tony Docherty’s side head back to Dens Park with nothing.
Two wins in 10 games, 10th place in the table and things don’t get much easier – a visit from Kilmarnock on Sunday before a trip to the fortress of Pittodrie the following weekend.
What they said
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “Alistair Johnston has got the feeling now of scoring goals so he’s hungry.
“But he’s top class, he’s a real leader, very strong defensively and a tough boy mentally. He’s done fantastic for us but tonight was also a good chance to get Tony [Ralston] some minutes.”
Dundee manager Tony Docherty: “I was really pleased with the level of performance the players put in. Playing against a top, top opponent like Celtic there’s so many things to get right.
“I thought the performance of the players merited a clean sheet.”

Rangers manager Philippe Clement tells BBC Scotland: “We started the game well, but when Aberdeen took over and we were struggling, we went behind and I made changes.
“We came out in the second half in a really good way, we were the team pushing for the win all second half.
“We were much more times in their box but weren’t clinical enough in the final third. They scored the decisive goal.
“It’s disappointing to lose the three points here. On a really lucky night we could have won this game. It’s about taking lessons out of this.
“It’s one of the better performances from this new squad but it was not good enough in the result, there’s still a lot to work on.
“You can’t say [the players] played a bad game today, but we need to work on things to make it better.

Gray bemoans ‘lack of quality in final third’published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time

FT: Ross County 0-0 Hibernian
Hibernian head coach David Gray tells Sportsound: “I think firstly, a point away from home and a clean sheet is never a bad thing, so we need to take the positives from that.
“A bit disappointed with the first half, I thought we were very flat, lacked a bit of energy, a bit of bravery on the ball, and an emphasis to go forward.
“I thought [we] heavily relied on the goalkeeper making a big save at a big time to go in at half-time at 0-0.
“The second half, much more like us in terms of a bit more on the front foot, a bit more aggressive in the way we wanted to play, with a lot more energy, created a few more chances.
“But if I’m being honest, I think there’s a wee lack of quality in the final third from us especially, or the decision-making and execution let us down a bit.”

“Coming in at nothing each [at half-time] I thought ‘more of the same’ and we did that.
“You saw the quality of substitutes Celtic brought on and I thought we were unlucky to lose the first goal.
“I felt a little bit hard done by for the second goal, I don’t think it was a penalty. I thought the performance of the players merited a clean sheet.
“I’m just proud of the players, the mentality and the work rate was really pleasing.
“We had three academy graduates in the middle of the pitch and I thought they equipped themselves well. For a club like Dundee that’s what we’re all about, improving and developing players in that arena. That’s the most pleasing thing, as well as our team performance.
“If we continue to show that spirit, mentality and quality on the ball then we’ll be ok.”

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: “When you are not winning games, you’ll take anything. We should’ve won by more. We dominated, especially in the second half, we were camped in their half.
“Greg Kiltie epitomised St Mirren tonight. We’ve missed him and his footballing intelligence. I’m singling him out but there were a lot of positive performances.
“We’re playing less around at the back and playing exciting, penetrating football. People running until they can’t run anymore. It is basic but we play a lot of good football around that. We got away from that but we won’t get away from that again.
“It’s easy for the crowd to get on your back but they didn’t because they could see the effort and energy from the players.”

“We should have won against Aberdeen, we went a bit slack but we’ll learn from that. I’m really pleased with the squad, we’ve been fantastic with lots of improvements to make.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s semi-final against the Dons, Rodgers said: “It was a really good game against them here [at Celtic Park].

Motherwell are up to fourth thanks to Zimbabwean Tawanda Maswanhise’s first goals for the Fir Park side. They are just three points behind Rangers, who they meet in Sunday’s League Cup semi-final.
This wasn’t a classic. In fact, it was downright poor in spells but Motherwell took their chances and will head to Hampden happy.
As for Dundee United, their manager Jim Goodwin wanted them to be better on the ball but they couldn’t do that for any sustained spell, with their opponents similarly guilty.
They need to get some of their key men back, with Ross Docherty, Ross Graham, Craig Sibbald and Louis Moult all missing at the moment and the squad looking a bit thin, with four academy youngsters on the bench.

The visitors lead after a lengthy VAR check.
Benjamin Kimpioka’s initial celebrations are short-lived, as he is ruled offside by referee Steven McLean, after flicking on a Jack Sanders header into the back of Ellery Balcombe’s net.
A long wait eventually results in the Swede racing away in celebration once more after the decision is overturned.

The word ‘blockbuster’ gets bandied around – but tonight’s Pittodrie encounter deserves such a billing.
Not just because of the well documented historical rivalry between the sides but because this is a really high stakes affair.
Yes it is early days, but Jimmy Thelin’s side are unbeaten in their 15 games across all competitions. If his team win tonight, they would move nine points clear of Rangers.
While Aberdeen’s form has been lauded, Rangers have been stop-start, with just one win from their four league games on the road this term.
Put all of that together and you start to see why this a huge game for both sides.

“I thought the performance (during Sunday’s loss to Rangers) was terrific, the energy levels were very good and I think the boys deserve to start again.
“At the moment, you would take a poor performance and three points because recently we’ve had a few decent performances and things have gone against us.
“It’s a run of results that aren’t good enough that we are working ever so hard to turn around. And I am confident we will.
“I’ve been impressed with (Valakari). And with St Johnstone’s signings. The boys up front are very dangerous with real electric pace. They are a good side. It’s a tough test.”

“It’s a dangerous game in terms of, I believe Hibs have got really good individual players despite where they are in the league table, so we need to be ready for that, but we always have real belief when we play at home.
“We were really happy with how we turned around the game on Saturday and got a really big three points. The challenge straight after the game was very clear. We’ve got another tough one in a couple of days, but can we back it up?
“If we’re not at it and we’re not on it, as we are collectively, then they’ll punish us. So we have to make sure we’re ready for that.”

“I trust the squad, there’s players that aren’t really getting any sort of game time but they all have a great value. For some games you just can’t make wholesale changes.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the team play, we’ve made six changes but it’s still a very strong team.
“This is a game of mentality. Players are in fantastic form, have shown great qualities, we’re scoring goals so I’m just looking forward to seeing us play and showing that hunger.”
On the absentees tonight, Rodgers added: “Adam Idah, Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor will all be fine for the weekend (League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen).
“Callum could’ve been involved tonight but there was no need to risk it. Kuhn had a bit of an issue with his hip after the weekend, again no need to risk it. Good news on Adam with the scan, he got away with it after the challenge and hopefully he’ll be ready for Saturday.”
