Trivia

  • KO: 17:30 Saturday, Premier Sports TV;
  • Semi-final, played at Hampden. Motherwell 1-2 Sevco in other match the next day, so a Glasgow Derby in the final.
  • Kick-off delayed due to poor visibility due to mass smoke from pyro flares!
  • Hat trick for Maeda but for many the real star was Kuhn who was sublime. Engels sublime corner created the first goal for the returning Carter Vickers. Idah comes on as a sub returning after injury.
  • Brendan Rodgers is listed yellow carded after coming out the technical area (where he after slipped when kicking the back).
  • Both teams joint top of the league undefeated including recent 2-2 draw between the two sides. Aberdeen on a roll having an incredible season so far, both sides are 9pts ahead of 3rd place Sevco.
  • Rodgers post-match makes statement criticising an insider who must be leaking out the teamsheet prior to the public release. Whoever is putting it out, if it’s someone from Celtic, you’re not a Celtic supporter
  • Dons were seeking to end a 32-year wait for a Hampden win over Celtic. Record carries on.
  • Aberdeen suffer their first loss in 17 games.
  • Luke McCowan cup-tied,  Odin Thiago Holm remains out with calf problems.
  • Celtic sign 5 year contract extension with Adidas.
  • Former Celtic coach Damien Duff has helped Shelbourne to their first League of Ireland title in 18 years
  • Ex Sevco manager Steven Gerrard faces demands to “resign” (sic!) from his £15.2m-a-year Saudi job after he infuriated Al-Ettifaq with a loss to a second-division team, and follows a bad losing streak.

Summary

joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki:
Celtic headed into this match with the general odds pretty even going. A very resurgent Aberdeen had drawn 2-2 at Celtic Park and defeated Sevco at Pittordrie only a few days beforehad (with Aberdeen on a long undefeated run).
However, with a mostly fully fit squad, once Celtic took hold of the match and went in front, the advantage kept growing and Aberdeen just gave up the ghost despite some heavy tackling. The two stand out players were Maeda who scored hat-trick, whilst Kuhn was sublime at times and deserved his goals. Engels set the game up brilliantly with a world class corner that connected perfectly with Carter Vicker to score the first goal with a header.
From there, Celtic played one of the best performanes at Hampden in a long while, and Celtic demonstrated the gap currently between themselves & the rest when on top form.
The only bizarre moment was first laughably on a rainy pitch when Rodgers tried to kick the ball back on field but slipped and ended up outside his technical area to then be yellow carded! Over-reaction by the referee, but didn’t spoil our day.

El Salto: Superb performance
Maeda, Hatate, Kuhn, Engels were absolutely brilliant, but there were no failures, everyone was on it

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers reacts to a sensational win for his team (and, of course, that second half fall too) “They don’t make Tom Fords with studs on them?”

@agentscotland: FT: Celtic 6-0 AberdeenA demolition of the harshest & highest order from Celtic, six goals, and some of the very highest quality, there’s not enough twitter characters to accurately describe them all. When Celtic bring their A-game they’re untouchable, sensational performance.

That is a magical finish from @CelticFC ‘s Nicolas Kühn  “You could have three Mitovs in the goal, he’s not saving it!”

Tam selleck: We are the best team in the land by a country mile. This brings us one step closer to being the world’s most successful football club. An accolade Rangers made up for marketing purposes that we are about to take off them and gloat like its Valentines Day 2012.

Banners and pyro can’t take centre stage as Rodgers’ team puts on a show

A run which started back in July against Queen of the South came to a crashing halt at Hampden. The wheels of Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen bandwagon might not have come off at the national stadium but they buckled alarmingly.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was just how much of a surprise it seemed. Defeat, the first of Thelin’s tenure, was always possible of course. But the manner of it came as something of a shock. Celtic were home and hosed and able even to laugh at themselves by half-time.

Some slapstick was provided by the sight of Brendan Rodgers slipping when trying to kick the ball back onto the pitch. The Celtic manager got up, raised his hands into the air in acknowledgement of one for the bloopers reel and then received a yellow card from smiling referee Kevin Clancy for preventing Aberdeen taking a quick throw-in.

It might even have drawn a smile from the most ardent Aberdeen fan although any such good humour was being severely tested by full time, by which time Celtic had added another three goals to make it 6-0. Man-of-the-match Daizen Maeda completed his hat-trick five minutes before the end following a move involving around six players, including nutmegs and back-flicks, that was reminiscent of 1970s Brazil.

It said everything that while the game’s kick-off was delayed by as many as 13 minutes due to smoke from fans’ pyro displays, Clancy played just six seconds extra at the end of the second half despite several interruptions for substitutions. There were no complaints at such mercy being shown to Aberdeen.

Still, a sardonic banner from Celtic fans reminding them that “at least you still have the Northern Lights” was probably not the consolation required by those wearing Aberdeen colours. Preparing such droll statements was a better use of these supporters’ time than an elaborate pyro exhibition prior to kick-off. On a still night in the south side of Glasgow, the smoke refused to clear from the national stadium.

The players were left to kick balls around amongst themselves. Celtic dealt considerably better with the delay than Aberdeen, who were three down after 40 minutes.

Nothing was necessarily over then of course. Aberdeen had only to look back a matter of a couple of weeks to gain some succour. Trailing 2-0 at half-time against Celtic at Parkhead, they enjoyed a resurgent second half to draw 2-2 and keep that unbeaten run going for another week.

This, though, did seem like another matter. A cup semi-final, the national stadium and a nine-match losing run at the venue against the same opponents all seemed to spell out trouble for Aberdeen.

A third goal for Celtic from the rampant Maeda five minutes before half time did seem to have taken the tie away from them. This conclusion was confirmed three minutes after the interval when the same player tapped in number four. “Are you Rangers in disguise?” chorused the Celtic fans. Ouch. Nicolas Kuhn curled in a fifth off the bar and we’d not even played an hour. Game over though there was a delay to rule on a suggestion it might have been offside. It wasn’t. Aberdeen’s misery was not even complete but many of their fans in the 47, 544 crowd reached the verdict that this was the point where they had seen enough. Their stoicism was admirable since the game was up long before this.

It already looked like being a long night ahead when Kyogo Furuhashi thrashed in Celtic’s second off the bar in 32 minutes following unselfish work from Maeda, who had set off like Roadrunner after picking Slobodan Rubezic’s pocket in midfield. Cameron Carter-Vickers had headed in the opener in ominously straightforward fashion from Arne Engels’ corner three minutes earlier. Aberdeen were already in a hole and this time they looked incapable of digging their way out of it.

Celtic, on the other hand, were utterly relentless. While a strong Jamie McGrath challenge on Kyogo had appeared to set the tone and an interesting Sivert Nilsen v Engels battle seemed set to be developing in midfield, these observations were just words written in a notepad in the final analysis.

Hopes for a cup classic willed by the neutral faded long before half-time. Not that the Aberdeen fans should lose faith in their team. It might have been a poor night but there are plenty of opportunities to be redeemed, including when the same opponents visit Pittodrie in just over a month’s time. “We will still win the league!”, or words to that effect, the impressive number of Aberdeen fans left at the end chanted. The challenge has been set.

Daizen Maida hat-trick helps Celtic end Aberdeen run with League Cup semi-final mauling

Daizen Maeda netted a hat-trick as Celtic burst Aberdeen’s bubble in emphatic fashion in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals.

Celtic scored five goals in half an hour at Hampden before Maeda rounded off a 6-0 victory late on to inflict Jimmy Thelin’s first defeat as Aberdeen boss.

Aberdeen fans travelled to Glasgow filled with hope of seeing their team beat Celtic at the national stadium for the first since 1992 but they were well and truly dismantled either side of half-time.

Cameron Carter-Vickers headed the opener from a 29th-minute corner following a delayed and scrappy start to the game, which then quickly spiralled in Celtic’s favour.

Maeda set up Kyogo Furuhashi to score the second and Nicolas Kuhn was also on target to send Celtic into the final on December 15, when they will play the winners of Sunday’s meeting between Motherwell and Rangers.

The Dons came into the game having won 15 games and drawn one under Thelin and on a 21-match unbeaten run since losing to Celtic on penalties at the same venue in last season’s Scottish Cup last four.

A 2-2 draw at Celtic Park two weeks earlier and a midweek win over Rangers, which put the Dons nine points ahead of the Light Blues, has seen Thelin’s side keep pace with the champions in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers welcomed the challenge of Aberdeen on the eve of the game and claimed the competition would help his side improve. His prediction was instantly fulfilled as he continued his perfect Hampden record.

Aberdeen were unchanged from the team that beat Rangers, meaning starts for Duk and Ester Sokler whose half-time introductions helped the Dons claw back a two-goal deficit at Parkhead.

Celtic started with Auston Trusty and Alex Valle in defence as Greg Taylor and Liam Scales had to make do with substitute appearances.

Kick-off was delayed by 13 minutes after a pre-match pyrotechnic display from both sets of fans led to visibility problems for the VAR technology.

The game was slow to get going even after kick-off with Arne Engels and Jamie McGrath blazing well over at either end.

The opener came when Carter-Vickers rose to head home Engels’ corner and Celtic doubled their lead on the counter-attack three minutes later.

Maeda intercepted a pass meant for Slobodan Rubezic, got the ball back from Kuhn before checking back to take Jack MacKenzie and goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov out of the equation and setting up Furuhashi to finish off the underside of the bar.

The third goal in the 40th minute also came on the transition. Kuhn played a brilliant through ball for Maeda, who ran round the back of Nicky Devlin and swept home.

Rodgers became the sixth person to be booked by Kevin Clancy before half-time, although both men had a smile on their face after the Celtic manager fell on his backside while booting the ball out of the technical area after his side’s passing move had broken down.

Celtic continued where they left off in the second half and took just four minutes to add to the scoring. Kuhn ran from the halfway line, waltzed into box and saw a shot saved before Maeda tucked home the rebound.

McGrath got Aberdeen’s only shot on target but his weak effort trundled along the ground into Kasper Schmeichel’s hands.

Celtic continued their clinical display when Engels helped the ball on to Kuhn 15 yards out. The winger was faced with a crowd of Aberdeen players but curled a shot in off the bar.

The Dons came very close to a consolation midway through the half when Sokler headed MacKenzie’s cross just wide.

But Celtic had the final say when Maeda tapped home Alistair Johnston’s ball across the face of goal with five minutes left.

Outstanding Daizen Maeda netted a Hampden hat-trick as six-goal Celtic booked a place in the Scottish League Cup final and ended Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin’s unbeaten start to the season in devastating fashion.

Pre-match pyrotechnics engulfed the national stadium in smoke – resulting in a 13-minute delay – but when sight of the pitch cleared, Brendan Rodgers’ rampant side put on a dazzling show of clinical attacking play.

Just three minutes after Cameron Carter-Vickers had thumped in Arne Engels’ corner, the magnificent Maeda raced clear to sit down goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov and tee up Japan team-mate Kyogo Furuhashi to slam in a second.

Rodgers’ men, who are yet to lose in 13 domestic games this term, had a third before the break when the sublime Nicolas Kuhn guided a ball in behind for Maeda to fire in his first of the night.

The Dons staged a two-goal comeback at Celtic Park a fortnight ago, but there was no chance of a revival at Hampden when Maeda knocked in a back-post rebound before Kuhn hammered in a goal his display merited just before the hour.

And Japan forward Maeda had his third and Celtic’s sixth when he provided the finishing touch to a stunning free-flowing move.

Although Aberdeen remain level on points with Celtic at the top of the Premiership, the chastening defeat serves as a reality check for Thelin, who now has first-hand experience of the damage Scotland’s dominant force can inflict.

Rodgers’ side will face either holders Rangers or Motherwell, who meet at the national stadium on Sunday, in the final on 15 December.

Celtic news, views & analysis

Keep up to date with Aberdeen

Maeda & Kuhn light up six-goal show

Celtic shipped a two-goal lead in the draw earlier this month, so Rodgers’ side had a point to prove and they did that by delivering an ominous message to the Dons.

Albeit in a different competition, the win severely dents any chat about a potential season-long title race between the clubs, who both travelled to Hampden with unbeaten domestic records.

Kuhn and Maeda were simply unplayable at times, although Aberdeen will feel they could have done better in spells.

Maeda’s relentless penetrating runs gave Aberdeen right-back Nicky Devlin a torrid evening and his run and set-up play for Kyogo’s goal was breathtaking.

German winger Kuhn, meanwhile, showed immense quality with line-breaking passes and a stunning run in the lead-up to Maeda’s second. Kuhn’s thumping finish for Celtic’s fifth capped a superb performance.

It was a Celtic display that asserted their domestic dominance – and Rangers boss Philippe Clement and Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell would have watched knowing whatever team gets to the final will need to deliver an almighty showing to claim the trophy.
Dons punished in ruthless fashion

Just as they were at Celtic Park, the Dons were happy to concede possession and for half an hour their defensive shape was fairly resolute.

But Carter-Vickers’ simple opener from Engels’ corner opened the floodgates and Thelin’s side were simply unable to deal with their relentless opposition.

Continually they were overrun in midfield and were also ruthlessly punished for mistakes.

Slobodan Rubezic losing possession on halfway resulted in Celtic’s second, Devlin was too deep for the first of Maeda’s treble, and Kuhn escaped a challenge too many for the fourth.

On a sobering night for Thelin, his task now is to ensure the manner of this defeat does not deliver long-term damage to his players after a stunning start to the campaign.

“It’s the first bump in the road, most importantly for us now is how we move on in the future.
