Summary

@joebloggscity of KDS:

This match was the proverbial game of two halves, with a terrible first half providing Hearts with three opportunities to take the lead whilst Celtic had really none. Hearts tactics in the half were spot on and belied the second bottom position they currently languish in (just above Hibs!). You could see that the Celtic players were still recovering from returning from international duty, not helped by poor & cold weather on this day. Engels in particular still trying to find is feet at the moment, but patience is needed with him, but even other high profile players like Kuhn were off key in the first half.
The second half was a change, but really an opening goal was only going to come by with some luck, and that’s what happended with clearance deflecting the ball landing by luck for Kyogo to take a couple of chances to bury the ball and give Celtic the lead. From there, the match turned on its head with a fine long run & 1-2 between Kuhn & Maeda, providing Kuhn was guilt edged chance to bury the ball with a thunder shot to make the score 2-0. Idah came on later to add a third with a penalty also at the death. In between Hearts Drammeh scored a wonderful long-range low shot to give Hearts a consolation goal.
Not a vintage match, but the final results on the day was what matterred most and providing Celtic with a safety gap now to Aberdeen (the Goal Difference acting like an extra point).

El Salto of KDS:
Poor first half and we struggled with their press, we gave up too many chances.
Second half we seemed quicker and not so many passes were going astray. After we took the lead it was never in doubt, Hatate and McGregor, after underwhelming first halves, started to play.
The subs also played a big part, four goals while in second gear wasn’t bad at all.
As for their insulting allocation to Celtic of 576 tickets, I hope they lost thousands of pounds tonight in what could have been filled seats.
As for our sluggish first half, we can’t afford a similar performance this week against Bruges, teams at that level will punish us, something that Hearts weren’t capable of no matter how well John Robertson thought they played.

Champions move clear at the top with scintillating second-half show

It doesn’t matter these days if Celtic are not quite at their sparkling best on the domestic front. Unlike the last time they were at Tynecastle, when Brendan Rodgers’ men were not at it and lost 2-0 back in March, the champions prevailed 4-1 under the lights in Gorgie to move top of the Premiership outright for the first time this season.

Celtic are a different beast from eight months ago, when that defeat – their last in Scottish football – seriously questioned their title credentials. Rodgers picked up a ban for his comments on the officials that afternoon, taking VAR decisions to task. There was none of that here, his team recovering from a sticky first half where Hearts were the better side to chalk up win number 11 of the season.

Just 12 matches in, Celtic are 11 points clear of Rangers, who are lagging way behind in third place and drew 1-1 with Dundee United earlier in the day. Second-placed Aberdeen lost for the first time in the league this season at St Mirren and are now three points behind. One expects Celtic’s gap to only widen now.

It feels churlish to be critical of this Celtic team given the scoreline – but Hearts will rue their inefficiency when in the ascendancy during a highly competitive first half. Neil Critchley’s men played well during that period and created some promising openings against visitors who were potentially disjointed to begin with owing to the international break. But Hearts’ predicament at the other end of the table remains real. Sitting in 11th place, they remain only a point ahead of toiling neighbours Hibs.

Hearts were up for this, despite Tynecastle not being at its crackling best. The 7.45pm kick-off time and the inclemencies wreaked by Storm Bert earlier in the day resulted in a number of empty seats inside the stadium. The slightly muted atmosphere – not helped by the paltry 550 away-fan allocation in the corner of the Roseburn Stand – did not put the hosts off.

Critchley likes his teams to press and harry their opponents and they did that from the off. Celtic were never really allowed to settle in a competitive first half. The tigerish Cammy Devlin snapped at the heels of Celtic captain Callum McGregor, ably supported by Malachi Boateng and Beni Baningime. Celtic try to choke the game with their own midfield trio but they did not get it all their own way in the first 45 minutes.

Hearts had the better openings. Just two minutes in, Lawrence Shankland cutely headed the ball into Blair Spittal’s path inside the penalty box, but his effort bounced straight at Kasper Schmeichel. Celtic were sloppy in the opening exchanges, a cavalier crossfield pass from Greg Taylor to McGregor going off-piste to Hearts’ left-back Penrice. His strike was too central.

Hearts were getting joy down the left, with Spittal dovetailing nicely with the once again impressive Penrice. The full-back cut the ball back to Shankland on 17 minutes but on his weaker foot, the captain sclaffed wide from an inviting position. The same duo combined on 21 minutes when Penrice clipped the ball to Shankland, whose header on the backwards stretch was fielded comfortably by Schmeichel.

Twice Celtic centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers had to be alert to put in timely interventions as Hearts grew in confidence. At the other end, Celtic’s best attacking moments were far from threatening. Daizen Maeda headed over after McGregor picked him out with a nice chipped pass, while Kyogo Furuhashi’s strike from the edge of the penalty box was comfortably fielded by Craig Gordon. The Hearts back four coped admirably with Celtic’s pace and movement.

Rodgers would have no doubt urged improvement during the interval. It took them just five minutes into the second half to fashion a proper opening, Nicolas Kuhn’s exquisite ball over the top setting Furuhashi free, only for Gordon to spread himself and block well from the Japanese. Celtic required more of these moments.

Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring at Tynecastle on his 150th Celtic appearance.

The next one came five minutes later and they made it count – although there was an element of fortune to the opener. Daniel Oyegoke did well to intercept a slide-rule pass but his clearance battered off McGregor to set Furuhashi free close in. While Gordon did well to stop his initial effort, the rebound fell kindly for the striker and he bundled the ball home. It was a fine way to mark his 150th appearance for Celtic.

Another five minutes later, another goal. From a Hearts corner, Celtic sprinted up the pitch. Kuhn exchanged passes with Maeda and the former thrashed the ball high beyond Gordon. Almost callously, they had killed the contest.

Substitute Adam Idah fired home on 79 minutes and bagged a penalty in stoppage time. In between Hearts’ Musa Drameh belted in a corker of a strike to give the hosts a consolation. It was a mere blot on Celtic’s ever impressive copybook.

Clinical Celtic moved three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with what eventually proved a straightforward win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

After Aberdeen’s first league loss of the season earlier on Saturday, Brendan Rodgers’ side knew they could put daylight between themselves and the Dons for the first time this term with victory in the capital.

However, they started slowly and were fortunate to go in at half-time on level terms after Blair Spittal and Lawrence Shankland spurned golden chances to give Hearts the lead.

It was a different story after the break though and Kyogo Furuhashi’s seventh goal of the season put Celtic in front at the second attempt after Craig Gordon initially saved when Daniel Oyegoke’s clearance deflected into the Japanese striker’s path.

A wonderful break and finish from Nicholas Kuhn doubled Celtic’s advantage five minutes later and the result was never in doubt from that point onwards.

Adam Idah added a third after some tidy passing on the edge of the Hearts box despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Gordon.

Neil Critchley’s side continued to show impressive industry, and were rewarded for their efforts when substitute Musa Drammeh grabbed a late consolation, beating Kasper Schmeichel from long range with a powerful drive.

Idah then made it four from the penalty spot in time added on after James Forrest was tripped by Jorge Grant, to cap an excellent second-half showing from his side.

Hearts stay 11th, just one point above city rivals Hibs at the foot of the table.

Celtic’s quality shines through

Although the sides went in level at half-time, it felt almost inevitable that Celtic would turn it on after the break, such are the standards Rodgers has set.

Kyogo was limited to just six touches in the opening period, but his first meaningful contribution of the match was to do what he does best, slotting home the opening goal after a sharp stop from Gordon.

Kuhn continued his wonderful season with a searing left-footed finish into the top corner on an evening where he oozed confidence and class.

Rodgers rung the changes from there and his squad’s strength in depth was highlighted by the way they kicked on, not least with Idah’s cameo.

The Irish striker has a knack for scoring goals and offers a totally different threat to Kyogo – having someone of his quality to call upon off the bench is a real luxury for Rodgers.

Celtic now take real momentum into Wednesday’s Champions League match against Club Brugge, as they look to continue their positive European campaign.
Positives amid frustration for profligate Hearts

Critchley tweaked his system for the visit of the champions, dropping Kenneth Vargas in favour of another body in midfield, and it paid dividends early on.

Hearts pinched possession in dangerous areas, limited Celtic’s chances to a minimum, and really should have gone into half-time with at least a one-goal lead.

Spittal appeared not to realise the space and time he had inside two minutes when he scuffed his effort into Schmeichel’s grateful arms, and the industrious James Penrice carved out multiple opportunities down Hearts’ left flank.

He twice teed up Shankland, who shot tamely wide before heading straight at Schmeichel.

They were the type of chances the Scotland striker took without thinking last season, but he is a player clearly short of confidence after scoring just once in all competitions this term.

You sensed Hearts would be punished for their profligacy and so it proved. The first defensive lapse of any kind resulted in the opening goal and Critchley’s side never truly recovered.

Still, Critchley will take some positives despite the scoreline, not least Drammeh, who displayed an eye for goal Hearts have sorely lacked in recent weeks.
What they said
Media caption,

‘Second half we were excellent’ – Rodgers

Hearts head coach Neil Critchley: “We were excellent first half. Good organisation, good structure, pressed well and created some really good moments.

“You have to take your chances in these type of games, and we didn’t. You also need an element of luck and they had it for the first goal. 4-1 looks like a drubbing but I didn’t think it was a true reflection of the game.

“[Lawrence Shankland] put a real shift in, and he just needs one of those moments to go for him. He needs to stick at it, and we need to stick with him. He’s contracted to the end of the season and when you see the way he plays tonight there’s no reason to doubt his commitment to Hearts.

“We need to bounce back. We’re in a relatively decent position in Europe and we need to go and improve if we want to get something on Thursday night [against Cercle Brugge].”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: “I’m really pleased. Tynecastle is a really tough place so to win 4-1 was really pleasing.

“Second half, we figured out their press. They have normally been pressing in 4-4-2 but changed it slightly. It just meant we had to drop a man in our build-up play.

“We had some good moments in the first half, but once we were able to play through that pressure, I thought in the second half we were excellent.

“It’s a very exciting period for us. All the players know they will play, they just need to be ready.”

From Celtic’s perspective, there was a change at half-time. They moved the ball much quicker. And that did not allow Hearts to get close to them, especially in the midfield area.

That allowed Celtic to control the game. And once the chances came… bang, bang, bang.

It’s weird to think the game was goalless at half-time.

Hearts and their fans would have been feeling good about themselves at that point, but that second period has changed the complexion.

Fourteen games in and they are still second bottom on just nine points. That’ll explain the booing from the home support.

There’s only so long you can say ‘this squad is too good to be in a relegation battle’.

Hearts couldn’t take the big chances. Shankland, the man at the heart of that story, he needs to put the ball in the back of the net. That’s what he gets paid to do.

At the end of the day, when you’re down at the bottom and struggling, when your striker gets these chances and he can’t put them away, that is a problem.

Beni Baningime slides and wins the ball right on the edge of the Celtic box.

It reaches Lawrence Shankland, who decides to bounce one to Cammy Devlin who is in a better shooting position, but Kasper Schmeichel makes the save.

It was all very unconvincing from the hosts.

This should be a cracker at Tynecastle to round off what has been another incredible day in Scottish football.

Hearts are the last Scottish side to defeat the champions and although that was way back in March and so much has happened since then, they will fancy their chances of repeating the upset.

That loss is Celtic’s only domestic defeat this year and Brendan Rodgers will want to maintain the incredible run of form they are on right now.

Watch again: Hearts defeat Celtic in VAR-laden clash

Celtic are unbeaten in 26 domestic games. The last Scottish team to beat them? Hearts.

Back in early March, the Jambos prevailed 2-0 in a VAR-dominated contest in which Celtic missed a penalty and had Yang Hyun-jun controversially sent off before a Jorge Grant spot-kick and Lawrence Shankland strike secured victory.

The drama wasn’t finished there. Brendan Rodgers’ post-match comments – the Celtic boss complained of “incompetence” from the match officials – earned him a touchline ban.

Will tonight’s encounter be similarly combustible?
What do the stats say?published at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November

Hearts v Celtic (19:45)

After their 2-0 win in March last season, Hearts could win back-to-back home league meetings with Celtic for the first time since August 2006.
Celtic have won both of their last two league meetings with Hearts without conceding. They last both won and kept a clean sheet three times in a row against the Jambos in the Scottish Premiership in May 2017 during Brendan Rodgers’ first spell in charge.
Only Celtic (177) have recorded more pressed sequences in the Scottish Premiership this season than Hearts (162).
Celtic have won all six of their away league games this season by an aggregate score of 18-1. Only in 1957-58 (10), 1971-72 (nine) and 2017-18 (seven) have they ever won their opening seven away matches of a league campaign.
Celtic’s Nicolas Kuhn has been directly involved in 21 shots following a ball carry (10 shots, 11 chances created) in the Scottish Premiership this season, the most of any player.
