Title: The Treble 2000-2001
Release Date:2001

Hard to believe it is nearly 10 years ago that Martin O’Neill stood on the steps of paradise and spoke with calm authority and told us: “I will do everything I possibly can to try and bring some success to this football club."
Twelve months later and he had just about delivered on his promise. This DVD charts an incredible season for Celtic and the re-emergence of our great club as the dominant force at home and the beginning of becoming, once again, a team feared in Europe. .
Narration on the DVD is by Tony Roper who can occasionally be a bit too smug but hard not to be when you’ve put your rivals so firmly in their place. The DVD itself charts the progress of the season game by game, month by month interspersed with player interviews that are carried out during the season but look suspiciously like they’ve been done at the end and pretended they were carried out as the season progressed.
Never the less this is a fascinating tale as the drama unfolds from Day 1, the opening league game at Tannadice to the historic Cup Final win against Hibs 10 months later in the glorious sunshine of Hampden.
No matter how good your memory is you will still be amazed at how good the team was that season You also forget in the pre-transfer window days how significant it could be to sign players as the season progressed. In the months leading up to Xmas O’Neill signed Didier Agathe, Alan Thompson, Rab Douglas, Ramon Vega and Neil Lennon. Who were all to play an important part during the season.
There were numerous highlights during this historic season and you need to watch the DVD to re-live the many great moments and goals but the some of my particular favourites were:
• The 6-2 mauling of the Huns including Henke’s chip, Ricksen being torn to pieces by Petta, in fact the whole game really
• Henke’s Hat-trick in the League Cup Final
• The noise that greeted Mjallby’s last minute goal against Dundee that set up the Championship clinching day against St Mirren
• Clinching the title before the split thanks to Tommy Johnston's excellent close control
• The 3-0 Ibrox win
• Completing the treble at Hampden
The list could go on for page after page.
The season produced many great goals all of which are captured on the DVD and many if not most you will have forgotten about but as if you needed any reminding Larsson was just on fire all season and even though he lost his trademark dreadlocks in October it thankfully didn’t affect his ability. He was a man at the peak of his powers and all the more incredible considering he was returning after his horrific leg break in Lyon the previous season.
His array of goals and assists is just a joy to watch. Almost impossible to pick out the best ones but for starters there is the Demolition Derby chip, his drag back for his hat-trick in the league cup final and his 50th at Ibrox. That only leaves you another 50 to watch. He was of course ably assisted by the likes of Lubo, Sutton and Neil Lennon who got the first of his 3 Celtic goals against Dunfermline.
You can re-live Lubo’s free kick past Goram, his goal from almost the corner flag against St Johnstone, his double against the huns at Ibrox. You can revel in Sutton’s strikes against the Huns, his double in the 4-2 at Tynecastle and the forming of a lethal partnership with Larsson. You get the chance to see Mark Burchill scoring the fastest ever hat-trick in European competition. You could have celebrated Mjallby’s goal at Fir Park but despite it being 3 yards over the line neither the ref nor linesman gave it. The game finished 3-3 but in the bigger scheme of things it didn’t matter.
The season did have its black moments though but fortunately these were few and far between. There was the 5-1 defeat at Ibrox which although hard to take at the time meant the team never took anything for granted thereafter. This was the season that Alan Stubbs had a recurrence of his cancer and Morten Weighorst was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Thankfully both players recovered and Stubbs even managed to make a re-appearance before the end of the season and scored in a 5-2 win over Hibs.
Stilian Petrov after playing such an important part in the campaign suffered a broken leg in an away game against St Johnstone and the DVD for some reason likes to show the incident in slow motion. This was also the season we saw the sad passing of Lisbon Lion Bobby Murdoch after a short illness.
There is so much to enjoy about this DVD though. Grab yourself a few beers and enjoy over 2 hours of Celtic magic. Make no mistake this was the start of a golden era and there are many happy memories contained within. MON and his team gave us our pride back and in the process started the huns on their downward decline as they tried to spend their way back to the top. I only need to mention £12 million on Flo as their recklessness led them down the path that they are now paying for today.
The DVD contains some extras, the main part of which is a Celtic TV production on Tom Boyd and his testimonial game against Manchester Utd. Some of the interviews with the players are hilarious especially the Sutton and Tommy Johnston one. Other extras cover squad profiles and league tables.
Overall this DVD should be in the must buy category for any Celtic supporter. It may be a long time before we see such a team and season again and although we should always be looking forward there should always be a place for celebrating your past achievements.
