Trivia
- KO: 12:00 Sunday, Sky TV
- Celtic come to this match in a must win in a really bad spell. Aberdeen also have had a poor start to the season. Celtic in sixth in the league, six points behind Sevco who top the league.
- Ange under the cosh; “We’re not going to change our approach.” – Ange, post-match from the last game
- Lots of injuries still, Forster, Jullien, Taylor all out…. Gia kept on the bench.
- Celtic finally win away first time in the league since February!
- Plastic bottle lobbed at Celtic players after the second goal (clear on pics)
- Aberdeen: A ninth game without a win proved their team’s fate
- Ex-Celt Scott Brown returns for first time to play against Celtic, this time as Aberdeen captain; he almost scores too which would have hurt!
- Refereeing today was a disgrace. Gave Aberdeen too many fouls wrongly, and Turnbull was yellow carded for nothing. Possible record number of fouls awarded against Celtic even though really high possession from Celtic, and not aggressive form! Ridiculous.
- Sevco defeat Hibs 2-1 but only after going down 1-0 and then a Hibs player being wrongly sent off for a challenge which wasn’t even a yellow card in the opinions of many. A disgrace.
- Ex-Rangers captain Terry Butcher calls for gradual phasing out of heading in football to prevent “catastrophic” head injuries. He believes it’s “something we can do without”.
- SFA and @SPFL to co-host a meeting of Scottish Premiership clubs with a view to introducing VAR for all men’s top-tier matches in the Scottish Premiership and latter rounds of cup competitions.
Covid
- Supposed to be first match in which VAX checks are in place for supporters. However Aberdeen announce: All fans will be admitted to Pittodrie for the Celtic match, regardless of whether they have proof of vaccine or not. Due to major problems with Scotland’s Covid Vaccine App, so postponed.
Summary
(Joebloggscity of thecelticwiki)
Late winner by Jota, but for long spell in the game it was thought that Aberdeen would take at least a point and possibly deserved to win. Ralston on a poor run and the defensive unit (inc defensive duties by the midfield) is not very cohesive. Concerns over it all. Celtic had only two shots on target in the whole game! That is poor. Referee was a disgrace, and there’s no way Celtic made 27 fouls. Very questionable.
A poor performance but ultimately exactly the scrappy away win we so desperately needed to prove we can dig out.
Ange: “I’ve said to the players if anyone gets injured on international duty then don’t bother coming back!”
Ange: “Tough game. Tough place to come. Great character shown by the boys. Super happy for the players. We’ve struggled away from home in the league. It wasn’t smooth but you are playing v a team who are fighting for points. We found a way to get through. Very pleased”.
——
CelticWay of KDS:
It wasn’t deserved but it’s great to win a scrappy game for once.
Our full back portions are killing us. Ralston cannot pass, he cannot control the ball, and gets caught out of position. Montgomery is too inexperienced, his passing was brutal, defence was awful, and apart from the goal set up was terrible. When players ran at him he backed off and backed off until the crosses or shot, we don’t stop these crosses. I can’t understand why Scales doesn’t get a game. He looked big, physical, fit, it doesn’t make any sense.
At the start of the window everyone said full back positions were critical, and here we are with woeful full backs who are unfortunately Hamilton quality at best.
Ajeti was awful from the bench too.
When the full squad is fit we are dangerous, any players missing we are average. We need another 4/5 first team players at the window.
Final point, Aberdeen hit the deck with every single touch, I can’t believe the fouls they were given

Said it many a time and I will say it now. This is the time to raise the flag on cheating referees like Madden. Too many times its been the excuse that our refs just aren’t very good. Where they cheat as blatantly as this, that point is moot. No sour grapes, just grow a pair and come out and ask the question why we seem to be are reffed to a different standard. I was as surprised as anybody that Madden couldn’t find something wrong with our goals or the build up to them, but he did his best to disrupt any fluidity we had with the numerous petty and incorrect fouls given.
He booked Turnbull for a nothing challenge then ignored Ramsay’s two heavy and late tackles on Turnbull and Kyogo. We won that game ugly, in spite of Br. Madden’s best efforts. Its always a hard place to take points and I am please we got the win. It doesn’t alter the fact that we are still way short of the finished article, and our reliance on Kyogo, CalMac and Jota underlines the need to get the lid off the biscuit tin sooner rather than later. I am still on the Ange bus for now.

The Carter-Vickers > Ralston > Hart defence has been difficult to watch
Twitter:
I have an idea.Stay with me as it may be radical. The Celtic defence can’t defend crosses. So why are they not being lined up and Turnbull firing cross at them until they learn to deal with them?Learn to work as a unit? Do they actually train at all?
27 fouls given against us today to Aberdeen’s 10 – with 63 per cent possession. Please no one tell me its because we are breaking up counter attacks Man City style. These refs are cheating bastards.
Madden was a disgrace today. Giving free kicks to Aberdeen when there is little or no contact, ignoring the same “offences” on Celtic players. It’s blatant. It’s obvious.

Story of Aberdeen 1 Celtic 2: How Ange Postecoglou broke the glass ceiling with reminders of the ‘Ronny roar’
It was all about glass ceilings as Celtic beat Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Cracking in different directions. Just.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/story-of-aberdeen-1-celtic-2-how-ange-postecoglou-broke-the-glass-ceiling-with-reminders-of-the-ronny-roar-3405749
For Ange Postecoglou’s Parkhead side, an 84th minute Jota winner – just as they looked like seriously fracturing once more, in truth – allowed them to break through both mental, and tangible, barriers. Not only did it allow them to register a first Premiership away win in four attempts under the Australian; and only a second victory on the road in seven outings for him, it was the club’s first league success outside their own environs since February.
The punishment inflicted on Stephen Glass’s men felt harsh following their spirited second-half push. None of which changes the fact that, in now extending their winless sequence to nine games, Glass’s can’t look up for fear of what could be coming down upon him.

It must be said, though, that the Aberdeen support did not come down hard on their side as the Celtic travelling support found their voice to serenade their side. Customising a hymn – as is their wont – to belt out with mocking self-awareness “this is the day that we win away”, the post-match scenes, sing-a-long inspired, led Postecoglou to pumping fist towards them in acknowledgement. It instantly recalled the birth of the ‘Ronnie roar’ at the same ground under former Celtic manager Ronny Deila in November 2014. So too does the flawed nature of the Glasgow club in the here and now.

The Celtic manager chose to focus on the character shown by his team in fashioning a winner as they threatened to creak under a barrage of cross balls. And, indeed, without convincing, it does suggest progress that they could survive a pressurised situation. They did so with substitute Tom Rogic – introduced in the 72nd minute – proving creator in producing a piroutte before sending Adam Montgomery free down the left. Aberdeen parted like the red sea, the teenager delivered low for Jota to tap in from close range.
The deflation felt in home ranks was understandable. Joe Hart, and his goal had lived dangerously for stretches of a second period in which Glass’s men took control despite having to replace Scott Brown midway through – the former Celtic captain showing his class in his quarter-back tone setting even as his team struggled in his first outing against the club departed in the summer following 14 glittering years.
It seemed incongruous to see him celebrating a goal against Celtic, but his commitment to the Aberdeen cause was never going to be in any question. The 56th minute equaliser, meanwhile, raised further questions as to Celtic’s ability to defend set-pieces, with a Calvin Ramsay corner looping into the net off the shoulder of Lewis Ferguson.
The impoverished form of the pair was evident in their goal concessions across the early kick-off, and also in concentrated, but significant, modifications the two managers made to their team line-ups. Postecoglou’s decision to select Nir Bitton as his midfielder holder – providing the Israeli with a first Celtic start in two months – and deploy Callum McGregor in a slightly more advanced role seemed to belatedly recognise an issue. The pep has been squeezed out of his double-playmaker axis of Rogic and Turnbull, their influence having waned as he has felt it necessary to rely on them constantly. Either one could have made way for Bitton, and at Pittodrie it proved to be Rogic, who was then able to provide a late, crucial, spark.

Glass found himself in a similar position in addressing the goalkeeping situation that has festered through Joe Lewis flapping on a number of occasions as Aberdeen have become a soft touch. His manager didn’t shirk the hard call it demanded by dropping Lewis; an indignity he had never faced previously across five years at the club. His replacement, Gary Woods, hadn’t featured since May, but any notion that his presence could help end a run of 11 games without a clean sheet evaporated within 11 minutes.
It was all too simple for Celtic. A Turnbull throw-in down the right played back to him by Liel Abada, allowing the attacker to whip over a cross that Kyogo Furuhashi chested into the net from close in for an eighth goal in 10 appearances. Aberdeen’s centre-backs were posted missing once more and other home players joned them across a passive early spell.
Celtic then appeared as if they could pick them off for a staightforward victory. It is to the home side’s credit that they did not allow that to happen by fighting their way in; Hart, in odd fashion, lucky to see his claw at a bouncing Christian Ramirez effort skiff the bar as the interval approached.
Scorelines cloud all judgements, and so it will prove with Celtic taking the spoils and Aberdeen appearing a still despoiled project as a consequence of how the encounter eventually played out. But, with international break no doubt welcomed by both as the chance to regroup and refocus, the pair will accept deep-down that the road ahead for both still appears to be stretching out. All the more so for Aberdeen, of course, for while Celtic are at least positioned in the top six in the cinch Premeirship table, they have now slipped to ninth. New dawns, and new Dons, are not yet close to becoming realities.

Jota goal v Aberdeen
Jota’s late winner earned Celtic a first domestic victory on the road since February
Jota’s late winner earned Celtic a first away Scottish Premiership victory since February as Aberdeen’s winless run extended to nine games.
Kyogo Furuhashi chested in a deserved early opener but the hosts improved after the break and equalised when Lewis Ferguson diverted a corner in.
However, the visitors responded late at Pittodrie as Jota’s close-range finish earned a long-awaited away win.
The result means Celtic remain sixth and Aberdeen stay ninth.
But Ange Postecoglou’s side have closed the gap on the pack above, but still sit six points adrift of league leaders Rangers.
Aberdeen are without a win in all competitions in nine games, which includes a four-game losing streak in the Premiership – their worst run in the top-flight since April 2011.
Reaction & as it happened
All the pre-match talk about a Scott Brown reunion clouded the fact both sides were in need of a morale-boosting win, and for the majority of the first period, it looked like the visitors were the only team looking to achieve it as Aberdeen struggled to deal with Celtic’s tempo and approach play.
David Turnbull curled in a corner to Nir Bitton who squandered a golden close-range header but Kyogo made up for the Israel player’s miss when the Scotland midfielder bent in another stunning cross to find the Japan forward, who casually chested the ball into the Aberdeen net.
Celtic were clicking, especially down the right as young Aberdeen full-back Jack MacKenzie struggled to deal with Turnbull and Liel Abada doubling up on his side.
Celtic average positions
Celtic’s first-half average positions show how Turnbull (14) and Abada (11) doubled up on Aberdeen’s left
But it was the opposite flank that almost brought a second goal, Jota chopping inside and unleashing a dipping shot that bounced off Gary Woods’ bar.
The home side took a while to get going, but came to life as the first half came to a close.
Celtic’s defence showed signs of creaking as Christian Ramirez found himself with acres of space at a corner and hit a volley into the ground which Joe Hart flapped at before seeing the ball clip the bar.
Aberdeen continued that improvement into the second half with more direct play as Austin Samuels flashed over.
The hosts got the equaliser their second-half showing merited when Calvin Ramsay’s corner found Ferguson, who rose highest and ended up diverting the ball in with his shoulder.
The hosts might have taken the lead, with Hart parrying away a close-range header from Brown and a strike from Jonny Hayes.
But Celtic were more composed in the latter stages and found a vital winner when neat build-up on the edge of the area resulted in Adam Montgomery sliding the ball across for Jota to make no mistake.

What did we learn?
Questions have rightly been asked about Celtic’s mentality when the chips are down, and when Aberdeen equalised Postecoglou might well have been fearing the worst.
But his side showed a mental toughness that has until now been rarely witnessed and the Australian will hope this is a turning point in his side’s campaign.
For long periods of the first half it looked like Aberdeen would fail to capitalise on Celtic’s vulnerable backline, but Glass’ men rallied in a much-improved second half.
In isolation, a home defeat to Celtic is not catastrophic, but with the run the Dons are currently enduring and the mindset Glass’ players must surely be currently experiencing, this felt like a dispiriting moment in the Pittodrie side’s campaign.
What did they say?
Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass: “Overall we’re disappointed, but I’m pleased with the second half.
“We’re concerned we’re not getting the points we deserve on the board. It’s important we keep trying to get it right.”
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou: “The second half was a real battle, to the players’ credit we were looking for that second goal and I’m pleased the players got their reward.
“The important thing is the manner we did it, we showed great character. That’s probably the one thing people were questioning up until now.”
