Trivia

  • Sunday KO: 12:00pm; Sky TV
  • Green Brigade protest holds up match at the start, throwing tennis balls onto the pitch. Protest again proposed hiring of policeman Bernard Higgins who has a dark history in enforcement history v Celtic fans.  “Fans or Higgins? The ball’s in your court Nicholson”
  • Annual celebratory Mass held at 12noon Saturday to mark the 134th anniversary of #CelticFC’s formation.
  • Greg Taylor signed a new deal to summer of 2025
  • COP26 climate summit underway: The meeting in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November could lead to major changes to our everyday lives.
  • Another lost week for internationals after this game next week, albeit an important one for the national side. Good luck to them.
  • Sevco announce £23.5m losses and plummeting revenues as club reel from the effects of Covid
  • Scottish Police Federation chairman David Hamilton hit out at Celtic fans for their protests at Dens Park. The visiting support launched tennis balls onto the pitch as they railed against a possible appointment of Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins at the club. Hamilton said: “This is just pathetic. Bernie Higgins — like every other police officer — has a legal responsibility to enforce laws created by our Parliaments.” . He’s clearly missing the point, as clearly Bernie Higgins team was abusing their powers which is what the protests are about.
  • Covid: Hibs: Two games now postponed due to Covid results. Hibs chief executive has suggested the claims that the Easter Road side were breaking Covid protocols in their Inverness hotel ahead of their match with Ross County were from a Rangers fan, saying they “came from the blue side of Glasgow”. He said: “That’s a fact. I think there was a genuine concern [from the whistleblower] but I also think that this was someone trying to sensationalise a situation where the welfare of many, many people is at stake.” (Evening News)

Summary

Excellent performances by both Jota and Ralston (who continues to make waves).

Kyogo steals headlines with more goals but team performance.

Disappointing to concede two needless goals and Hart is at fault badly for second one.

Green Brigade protest holds up match at the start, throwing tennis balls onto the pitch. Protest again proposed hiring of policeman Higgins who has a dark history in enforcement history v Celtic fans. “Fans or Higgins? The ball’s in your court Nicholson”

Score doesn’t show the complete domination from Celtic. This was easily a four or five goal doing. Two soft goals lost. Some cracking attacking play. Jota, Ralston and Kyogo terrific while Bitton and McGregor controlled the game. Job done

Dundee were a bunch of hammer throwers.

The biggest thing Ange needs to work on at the moment is their inability to close down crosses and shots, the amount of time opposition players get to pick a spot is incredible, they’re far more guilty of it on the right hand side than the left.

6 points behind at the last international break. Down to 4 points at most and European football after Christmas achieved. Real good period for a Celtic side still developing

Good win for Celtic, another game where you come away thinking they’ve scored a good few but will be disappointed not to have scored another 2 at least, Ange protecting Kyogo certainly done Dundee a favour, exciting game, plenty of goals, great advert for Scottish Football. #SPFL

What Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou said on disruption of minute’s silence and Bernard Higgins protest

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/what-celtics-ange-postecoglou-said-on-disruption-of-minutes-silence-and-bernard-higgins-protest-3448440

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou elected to tread a delicate line on incidents involving the club’s away support as his side secured a resounding 4-2 victory away to Dundee at Dens Park.

The minute’s silence for remembrance had to be cut short with a clump of fans singing through the silence. Meanwhile, just a minute in, the game was stopped after fans threw on tennis balls as part of a protest over reports the club plan to appoint assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins to a senior security role, a banner having been earlier unfurled stating that “the ball is in your court Nicholson” – a reference to acting chief executive Michael Nicholson’s role in the Higgins move.

“My view on all those kind of things is that we live in a society where people are allowed to express themselves. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing,” the Celtic manager said. “My preference is that it doesn’t affect the 90 minutes of football. The 90 minutes of football is the time when I want us all united, the whole football club. Ultimately that is what we are all here for, those 90 minutes. That would by my preference but ultimately there are avenues for these kind of things for people to express themselves if they are not happy about something. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but, as I said, I’d rather protect the sanctity of that 90 minutes because I know how precious it is and if we want to be a successful team we need everyone united for that.”

Asked about the sanctity of a minute’s silence, the Celtic manager was similarly measured. “Again, you would have to ask the individuals why they felt the need to do that. My view again is pretty simple, that we treat these things with respect and dignity, and that’s what we try to do. We certainly did and I think the majority of the fans did because that’s the kind of football club we are.”

The Celtic manager demurred when it was suggested to him it was a shame he had to face such questions after so laudable a showing on the pitch from his team. “I don’t think it’s a shame,” he said. “You need to understand when people aren’t happy about issues they have every right to express themselves, it’s just the manner in which they do it. It’s a special football club and we want to have success here and I think we all live and breathe for those 90 minutes and I’d like in those 90 minutes for us to be a united club.”

Celtic continue at almighty lick at Dundee but disruptions from some supporters let them down

There are a number of conclusions that can be drawn from Celtic’s 4-2 away to Dundee.

The Celtic players celebrate Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal making it 4-1 during the cinch Premiership match between Dundee and Celtic at the Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park, on November 07, 2021.

Postecoglou’s men are moving forward at an almighty lick. The victory, choc-full of vibrant and fluent forward play, slick interchanges at pace and devastating results that made them a delight to watch, was a fourth league straight on the road for a team previously starved of any more than seven months. And as we enter the international break, Celtic can point to a run of seven games where the only aberration was last weekend’s scoreless draw at home to Livingston, despite a programme that would have held countless pitfalls for them not so very long ago.

Meanwhile, just as apparent from recent events, is that Celtic have part of its support that both is letting the side down, and does not value those that are representing them on the pitch. It could be no other way with the conduct of a section of some of the away fans in Dens Park. They would have known full well the consequences of singing through the Remembrance Day minute’s silence that forced referee Willie Collum to cut it short. The deliberate act sabotaged the narrative from the day, which should have surrounded the scintillating two-goal snaring performances of Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi.

Moreover, Dundee took care to state that the silence was for “all the fallen” in wars. That then included Aidan McAnespie, the young man murdered by the British Army in 1988, that they breached the silence to sing about. With their constant IRA chanting, a section of Celtic’s away support are time-warped in the 1980s even as what they would see as their community in the north of Ireland has firmly moved on. In large part, they have no time for the trivialising and glorying in their pain then for wind-up purposes.

Likewise with their protest, led by the Green Brigade, against the entirely ill-suited current assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins reportedly being lined up for a security role at the club. To throw on dozens of tennis balls on to the field seconds after kick-off only stopped their team getting into their stride, with the game forced to be paused as such as Joe Hart, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Welsh were forced to go around removing them from the pitch.

Sections of the Celtic support on Tayside – who threw in bigotry and misogyny with some of their other ditties – seemed little deserving of the side crafted by Postecolgou to serve up football at most intoxicating and engaging.

They fruits of these laudable ambitions were never more clearly evidenced than in Celtic’s goal to make in 4-1 in the 50th minute. It really should have come in 67 because the way the sliced Dundee defence to ribbons with Jota exchanges passes with Callum McGregor before setting up Furuhashi to smear an effort high into the net was a Celtic strike that could have come from their halcyon days.

Mind you, there were still defensive deficiencies. It was slapdash for Joe Hart to have a fresh air swipe at a cross and allow Lee Ashcroft to head in shortly after the Japanese striker had claim his second of the day. But it was reward for Dundee refusing to be completely submerged by a Celtic attacking flow that regularly reached torrent levels.

In that, the rehabilitation of Anthony Ralston continued at pace. In the week he signed a new contract tying him to the club to 2025, he claimed himself three assists to share the limelight with the unplayable Jota, so nimble and graceful he could feature on Strictly, and the forever deadly Furuhashi.

A shot that deflected off the post to pop out for the Portuguese winger to drive in from close range provided Ralston with his first contribution to Celtic’s goalscoring only eight minutes in. In the 9th minute, the right-back turned winger, Liel Abada sharply setting him up on the flank and Ralston responding with an artful cross that Furuhashi beat Ashcroft to head in.

Dundee gave themselves a lifeline by practically charging upfield – Danny McMullan doing the motoring – and pulling one back with Mullen jumping between Carter-Vickers and Welsh, but a moment of relief was never going to transform into anything more.

Celtic’s, in appearing men possessed following the break, made certain of that with two goals inside three minutes, with Ralston showing the strength to match his earlier poise by dispossessing Adams near the corner flag and flipping over a cross that Jota produced a volley with the outside of his right-foot to beat Adam Legzdins all ends up.

Jota has now netted six goals in his past 10 games for Celtic and, in one of the few moments of chanting levity, it was amusing to hear the away support sign “sing him up” of the on-loan Benfica attacker when he was withdrawn to take the accolades in the 81st minute. Apparently, that would cost around £6million at the end of his season-long loan deal. Right now, that seems as if it would be a steal.

Dundee: Legzdins, Kerr, Ashcroft, Sweeney, Marshall, Anderson, Adam (McGowan 57), McMullan, Elliot (McGhee 64), McGowan, Mullen (Cummings 72 ). Subs: Lawlor, Fontaine, Panter, Lamb.

Celtic: Hart, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Welsh, Juranovic, Bitton, McGregor, Turnbull, Abada (Forrest 61), Jota (Johnston 81), Furuhashi (Giakoumakis 61). Sub: Bain, Scales, McCarthy, Johnston, Montgomery.

Jota scores
Jota’s goal early in the second half calmed Celtic nerves and paved the way to victory

Portuguese winger Jota inspired Celtic to a comfortable victory at Dundee as they moved back into second place in the Scottish Premiership.

Jota opened the scoring and Kyogo Furuhashi doubled Celtic’s lead before Danny Mullen brought Dundee back into the game before the break.

But the Benfica loanee scored again two minutes after the restart then quickly set up Japan forward Kyogo for Celtic’s fourth three minutes later.

Lee Ashcroft then headed a consolation.

The win moves Celtic back above Hearts and within one point of leaders Rangers, who host Ross County at 15:00 GMT, while Dundee remain in 11th spot.

Reaction & as it happened

An excellent game was preceded by the disruption of the minute’s silence to mark Remembrance Day this week.

The away support also took the opportunity to protest against a mooted appointment of former Police Scotland assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins to a role at the club by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch after kick-off.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou picked the same team that won against Ferencvaros, in which all three of Jota, Kyogo, and Liel Abada scored. The forward trio put in another effervescent display here, with Jota the pick of them with a performance full of pace, trickery, and ultimately goals.

He was the beneficiary as Anthony Ralston worked space on the right-hand side of the box to drill a shot off the post, with the Portuguese winger alert to sweep home the rebound despite suggestions he was offside as the original shot was struck.

It marked a dominant opening spell, and as the clock hit 19 minutes Celtic had enjoyed over 80% of possession. Dundee sought to sit in, but their game plan to frustrate was blown apart when the impressive Ralston picked out Kyogo, who headed Celtic 2-0 ahead.

Dundee quickly turned to plan B, which was to be much more adventurous, with Paul McMullan the spark to get them going.

His driving run down the right committed Celtic defenders, and his combination with Paul McGowan allowed him to swing an awkward cross in, which Mullen took full advantage of to head beyond Joe Hart.

But while that goal buoyed the home side as they held their own to the break, they were blown away by Celtic’s quality within five minutes of the restart.

First Ralston overpowered Charlie Adam before whipping in a cross from the right, and Jota was the sharpest in the box again as he ran across his marker before guiding the ball into the net.

The Benfica loanee was a joy to watch, and turned provider by throwing in a couple of stepovers before teeing up Kyogo to sweep home a fantastic fourth goal to effectively end Dundee’s challenge with more than 40 minutes to play.

But while their defensive play has improved steadily this season, Celtic were again undone by a cross into the box, as Ashcroft got to a centre well ahead of goalkeeper Hart to power in Dundee’s second goal.

James McPake’s team continued to foray forward but could not put late pressure on Celtic, who had chances to add more goals, particularly when James Forrest rounded Dundee goalkeeper Adam Legzdins and teed up fellow substitute Giorgos Giakoumakis, who fired over.
Man of the match – Jota
Jota celebrates scoring the opening goal
With two goals and one assist, Jota was the best player on the pitch
What did we learn?

When Celtic’s front three are in full flow, they are unstoppable for most Scottish sides. Jota, in particular, is a player with the technical ability to play at the highest level, with the suggestion being his inconsistency was the reason he did not made the breakthrough at Benfica.

He looks to be loving life in Glasgow, though, and is now turning in big performances regularly, with six goals in his last 10 games. He was substituted to chants of “Celtic, sign him up”, and you suspect the club will be looking to activate their option to buy without delay.

Conceding two soft goals will be a source of annoyance for Postecoglou after some better defensive performances recently, and is a reminder they are far from the finished article.

Dundee have the worst defensive record in the top flight and that is always a recipe for concern when battling relegation. However, they can be encouraged with some of their attacking moves and scored two well-worked goals.

They won’t be the only ones to suffer at the hands of Kyogo, Jota, and Abada in the league this season.
What they said?

Dundee manager James McPake: “I thought the starts to each half we shot ourselves in the foot. They came out the blocks really well. To go 2-0 behind we showed character to get ourselves back in the game.

“At key stages against key players they are going to punish you when you switch off.

“But we showed real character to dig and scrap right to the end. Going away and watching that, you can’t fault their effort.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I thought the whole team were good at times today. We controlled the game and scored some great goals.

“A little bit of sloppiness crept in for their two goals and that was disappointing. I thought there might have been a bit of fatigue after Thursday, but to the players credit, they did well.

“[Jota] is doing really well, he’s got so much talent. My job is to make him the best possible player he can be. If he feels that this is the place for his future then we’d be more than happy to keep him.”
