Summary

“They’re the most important part of this football club.” Ange Postecoglou on the fans

Ange “Good all round performance. Started the game well and never let up. Rogic is one of these special footballers. Turnbull wants to improve and listens to everything we tell him. I’d love to rotate mid with schedule we have but if I did I’d get an earful from Callum”! #Celtic

DU Mgr “Big credit to Celtic today. They were terrific. We couldn’t get close to them the first 45 mins”.

(joebloggscity of thecelticwiki)

Great performance by Celtic who have been hit by a spate of injuries of late, and with Forrest and Taylor only just back. Still great play capped by an incredible solo dribble around 5-6 players to score for Rogic. Second goal was great with incredible but of skill by Turnbull to score. Kyogo caused lots of problems for the opposition but unlucky not to score. McGregor was excellent and shows what a captain should be.

Under fire Mikey Johnstone has a good game and set up the second goal. He needs more perifemancesike this to keep him in the minds of the management.

However despite the good points Celtic were underwhelming in converting gilt edged chances and in the tougher matches this will be more apparent. Hart got out of jail with a couple of clumsy moments in the game. Must add the Dundee Utd keeper had a blinder despite conceding three goals.

How the aptly named Butcher was NOT sent off after a near leg breaking challenge on Turnbull is baffling! A disgrace and many are convinced of referee bias after recent issues.

and congrats to Nir Bitton: 250 appearances.

Twitter:

Kyogo’s stats will say he had no goals or assists today but he could’ve had two goals and 3 assists, it was a terrific performance from him and the Dundee Utd defence couldn’t cope with his movement and vision, he makes the gsme infinity better for his midfielders.

That’s a disgraceful challange on David Turnbull, straight red all day long, Callum Butcher is extremely lucky, got form for that type of challange.

The most important thing today was David Turnbull not breaking his leg, just seen the replay of it, absolutely horrific challange, ref books Butcher so he’s clearly seen it, his assistant and fourth official are so close to the incident too, how that wasn’t a red I’ll never know.

BP: Absolutely dominant display. Should have scored a few more. Looking forward to all those wrong decisions being analysed in forensic detail

Anon: Rip Roaring, Free Scoring, Never Boring, Glasgow Celtic

TCWay: There has been more vitriol and outrage at one single marginal offside Celtic goal this season than the litany of soft penalties and red cards for another team when they look to be struggling. Theres no hiding the way the wind blows in this country.

“Stop eating and drinking” commands Celtic manager as exotic

Tam Rogic makes most of Tannadice defensive holes: Dundee United 0 Celtic 3
Dundee United were forced to close part of their ground due to last week’s storm. At times here it felt as if there was yellow hazard tape cordoning off the visitors’ half so rarely were the hosts permitted to explore it.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Tam Courts’ side were ultimately blown away by Celtic. Another Thomas was the architect. Tom Rogic might have resided in Scotland long enough to be addressed as “Tam” but there are times when he posts a reminder of his more exotic origins.

The midfielder can be considered something of a luxury player but what a luxury. He drifted past the challenges of four United players before clipping a shot from just inside the area past Benji Siegrist after 19 minutes. David Turnbull added another before the interval after a sumptuous Callum McGregor pass and substitute Liam Scales tied things up near the end.

It seemed obligatory to note that there were more holes in the United defence than in the roof of the Jerry Kerr stand, which had been deemed out of bounds following the recent high winds. Few teams could have lived with Celtic in the mood they were in here.

Only poor finishing prevented the side racking up a cricket score in front of their Australian manager on the eve of the Ashes. Ange Posticoglou’s compatriot Rogic was at the heart of most of Celtic’s good play before he made way for James McCarthy with 20 minutes left.

No disrespect to the latter, who has enjoyed a fine career, but few players in the world can be expected to compensate for the loss of Rogic’s elan. He is often unplayable and added a goal, only his second of the season, to the mix here.

“When he gets the ball, put down your phones, stop eating and drinking, just watch – because something will happen,” commanded Posticoglou afterwards.

“It’s not just his technique. He’s a strong player, hard to knock off the ball. United have a strong team in the middle of the park, they’re physical and they shut teams down – and it’s not an easy pitch.”

The finish was appropriately languid for just after midday on a Sunday as was the ease with which he evaded a succession of home challenges.

Some reports faithfully recorded Cameron Carter-Vickers’ part in the goal as an “assist”. It was as much an assist as Brian McClair’s pass to David Beckham when the Manchester United player scored from his own half against Wimbledon in 1996.

The defender was indeed the last Celtic player to take a touch prior to Rogic taking over. Carter-Vickers funnelled the ball out wide before standing back to admire the Australian midfielder jinking past his markers.

It was a cold, crisp day by the Tay but Rogic was in the mood. He held off Louis Appere, danced between Adrian Sporle and Ian Harkes before side-stepping Charlie Mulgrew and finishing with an artful shot beyond Siegrist. The goal reflected an afternoon when United struggled to lay a punch on Celtic.

Indeed, the only time they did make an imprint it was on Turnbull’s shin. Substitute Calum Butcher had only been sent on minutes beforehand to add some ballast to the home midfield. He risked being responsible for giving his teammates an even steeper mountain to climb.

A poorly challenge on the near touchline on Turnbull saw him pick up his obligatory booking but it probably should have been a red card, something he collected on his last appearance here v Aberdeen. He didn’t reach half time on that occasion. Here he might well have left United one short for the majority of the second half having only been sent on for Appere after 50 minutes.

In truth, the game was already up for United, who now look to regroup before Livingston arrive at Tannadice on Saturday. Their productivity so far this season means they can afford afternoons such as these. It’s only the second time they have fallen to successive defeats under the rookie manager and they remain fourth in the league.

Indeed, after a win here against Rangers and bonus point at Parkhead earlier this season, this is the first time they have failed to be competitive against the Old Firm in this current campaign.

There’s no need to panic on a very significant weekend for the club. Jim McLean began his managerial career 50 years ago with a 3-2 defeat against Hearts at Tynecastle. Courts’ first foray into management at senior level has gone well so far and patience is the key. It took several years for McLean to really get into his stride.

Turnbull’s strike five minutes before half-time all but eliminated the chances of the hosts taking anything from the game. The midfielder clipped the ball over Siegrist before slamming home. Scales scored a third, his first for the club, with a deflected shot nine minutes from time after a cross from fellow substitute Liel Abada.

United opportunities were scarce. Joe Hart was again too casual dealing with a backpass but Appere was not able to capitalise. The ‘keeper did make a good save from Sporle in the second half.

Hart was otherwise more gainfully employed dealing with the latest attempts by Celtic fans to make a point about the club’s apparent steadfast intention to appoint Bernard Higgins, the current assistant chief constable of Police Scotland, as head of security.

Another trip to Dundee, another anti-Higgins protest. This one was not quite as disruptive as the tennis ball prank over the road at Dens Park last month. Just bits of paper bearing his image inside a red no-go zone which they then scrunched up and tossed into the goalmouth.

Hart, helped by teammates, dutifully cleared the area and then looked on for the most part as Celtic drew nearer leaders Rangers with one of their most dominant away performances of the season.

Tom Rogic finishes off a fantastic solo effort to grab Celtic’s first goal
Tom Rogic finished off a fantastic solo effort to grab Celtic’s first goal

Tom Rogic wants to be a “dominant player” for Celtic, says manager Ange Postecoglou, after the midfielder scoring one of the goals of the season in the Scottish Premiership to set up victory against Dundee United.

The Australian started out on the right wing 25 yards from goal, but danced away from three United players before shaping a cultured shot past goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist.

David Turnbull and Liam Scales added further goals in a dominant display for Celtic as they overwhelmed their hosts.

A deserved win restores Celtic’s deficit to leaders Rangers to four points, while United remain in fourth place, ahead of Motherwell on goal difference.

Reaction & as it happened

“I know Tommy really well, he is a special player,” Postecoglou said of Rogic, who played under him for Australia. “He’s one of those the fans want to see.

“I’m pleased for him to get his goal. I think it’s the one area he’s let himself down this year – finishing his good work off.

“He’s working awfully hard off the ball as well. He’s had his little setbacks during his career but I can just see he’s really focussed and wants to be a dominant player in this team.”

Celtic had failed to beat United in their last two attempts, including a 1-1 draw in Glasgow in September, but there was never any question of being frustrated this time as they dominated from the start.

Rogic eventually unlocked the creaking home defence through his moment of sheer magic, akin to his winning goal in the 2017 Scottish Cup final against Aberdeen.

He picked up the ball on the right wing, shrugged off Louis Appere, and weaved past Adrian Sporle and Ian Harkes before curling a left-foot shot into the far corner.

Turnbull eased concerns brought on by early profligacy before the break as he enticed Callum McGregor to dink a brilliant ball over the United backline for him to touch over Siegrist and then knock home from a yard out.

Kyogo Furuhashi alone could have had at least a hat-trick for Celtic as – particularly in the first half – the visitors completely outplayed a passive United side.

The hosts improved marginally in the final half hour, the first of their two shots on target finally arriving in the 66th minute, without ever putting Celtic under serious pressure.

Instead, Scales came off the bench to stroke home a well-taken goal – his first for Celtic – following Liel Abada’s touch across the box with 10 minutes left.

Thomas Courts’ side were also lucky to end the match with 11 players after Callum Butcher was only booked for a dangerous tackle on Turnbull not long after coming off the bench after the break.
Man of the match – Tom Rogic
Tom Rogic celebrates his brilliant goal
No question about the best player on the pitch, who was everywhere. There won’t be many better goals this season. His work rate was just as impressive, with the Australian making more tackles and getting involved in more duels than any of his team-mates.
What did we learn?

Rogic is a revived player for Celtic. He was on the verge of a move to the Middle East last season but is now flourishing under his compatriot Postecoglou.

His goal was magnificent, though not surprising for a player of his skill, but it is his work rate and ability to win the ball which have improved massively this season.

Celtic’s movement is scintillating to watch, but arguably the foundation of this win was their hunger and intensity without the ball. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt led the squeeze from the back as Celtic swarmed round United whenever they were lucky enough to get a touch of the ball.

Postecoglou will still want his team to be more ruthless, and they did eventually give United a brief spell at 2-0 when Joe Hart made one good save, just as Hearts also had a good period of the game on Thursday. But they are in fine form right now.

Injuries are a bit of a concern too, with James Forrest forced off at half time with a tight hamstring and Jota facing “a few weeks” out according to the Celtic boss, though he added issues with Anthony Ralston and Stephen Welsh are less serious.

This was a second passive performance in a row from United, though, following defeat at Motherwell on Tuesday. They did not get close enough to Celtic and gave them easy possession at the back to build attacking moves.

Siegrist – who made eight saves – and the returning Jeando Fuchs were the only players to emerge with much credit. Courts’ thin squad looks tired right now and they lack the quality and depth up front to seriously hurt teams consistently. It’s now just one win in seven games after a strong start.
What they said

Dundee United head coach Thomas Courts: “It was a tough afternoon and in the first half the goals were extremely avoidable.

“We’re in a bit of a tricky moment just now. The squad has been a bit stretched. Today we just came up against a very slick outfit and our frailties on the day were highlighted.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was really solid from start to end. We didn’t let Dundee United get any respite at any time. We could have got more goals, but overall a real solid performance.

“What we’re trying to be and want to be is better every week. We’ve been consistent for quite a while now, home and away, and that level of performance has to stay.”
