“Slim and Fragile” Jimmy Moir signed for Celtic in September 1898 from Vale of Leven and made his debut for the Bhoys on 8th October 1898 aged just 18 in a 1-0 league win at home to St Bernard’s.
However the right-half initially failed to make an impact at Parkhead, playing just that one league game in his first spell, and was loaned to Vale of Leven and Blackburn Rovers.
He returned to Glasgow in May 1901 a much more assured performer (having had an excellent spell with Blackburn playing 32 out of 34 league games for them).
A great return going into the first team was ended against Rangers at Ibrox in the Glasgow Cup final of 1901. His knee was so seriously damaged he had to take it down to Manchester to consult Celtic shareholder and osteopath Dr Allison (‘Daddy’) at his famous clinic on Hyde Rd. Rangers were awarded the Glasgow Cup as Celtic refused to a replay unless it was played at a different ground.
Upto that point, with Celtic he was having a great run, with 8 wins out of 8 in the league at the start of season 1901/02. As Celtic went on to lose the league by 2pts to Rangers that season, it is a matter of debate if the loss of Jimmy Moir contributed or even led to the loss of the title that season.
He made a comeback at the start of 1902-03, and played in all the league matches that season. However, Celtic were out of sorts and slumped to fifth in the league with a dominant Hibs side the new title holders.
During that season, he won a gold watch on Sep 24 1902 in the final of the Ibrox Disaster Benefit Tournament (beating Morton 4-2), and at the end of the season he also won a Charity Cup medal in his time at Celtic, 5-2 win v St Mirren in May 1903.
His last season (1903/04) mirrored the previous season (1902/03), with Celtic not much out of the blocks coming fourth with Third Lanark winning the league title. However, he only played a small part in season 1903/04, and Celtic still won five of the six league games he played him. His last match was a 3-1 loss in the league away to league title champions to be Third Lanark. It is hard this time to know if he had remained if he could have been the difference to a stronger challenge.
Jimmy Moir had made a total of 38 league & Scottish Cup appearances for Celtic by the time he was transferred to a happy Blackburn on a permanent basis in November 1903.
Disappointingly, he left Celtic without any major silverware for all his efforts.
He remained at Blackburn for a few years before returning up north to play for Clyde in 1907.
