WHEN Tony Mowbray was appointed manager of Hibernian in 2004, he was immediately charged with the task of finding an assistant. His choice was Mark Venus and they have been inseparable ever since.
Defensive team-mates at Ipswich town in the 1990s, they resumed their partnership at Easter Road. When Mowbray was appointed West Brom manager in 2006, his trusted lieutenant followed. Now, along with first-team coach Peter Grant, the duo have been handed the challenge of leading Celtic forward.
Born in Hartlepool on April 6, 1967 – just weeks before the Lisbon Lions conquered Europe – Venus started his career with Hartlepool United, before moving to Leicester City in 1985. A three-year stint there was followed by a nine-year spell at Wolves.
Six eventful and successful years with Ipswich began in 1997 and it was then that he forged a friendship with Mowbray. His playing career finished in 2004 and he immediately moved north to join up with Mowbray as coach at Hibs.
After three years with West Brom, having followed Mowbary south, the Englishman returned to Scotland as the new assistant manager of Celtic under manager Tony Mowbray. As a trusted colleague and confidant, Venus worked closely with Mowbray. When the manager was sacked in March 2010 out to went his team of Mark Venus and Peter Grant.
Since departing Celtic Mark continued his association with Mowbray working as his assistant at Middlesbrough from October 2010 for three years. He took over as caretaker manager when Mowbray was sacked in October 2013.
He teamed up again with Mowbray at Coventry in 2015 and continues there at present (2016).
