Review

A large crowd witnessed the match between the Celtic and the 3rd LRV. The game throughout was exceedingly well contested, and resulted in a win for the Celts by 4 goals to 2. Had the Third had their full team no doubt the result would have been much closer.

The forward play of the Celts showed a marked improvement on their recent displays. Madden was tried in the centre and combined the wing effectively. He should be retained in that position.

All round the Third played in good form, although Rae’s absence at back was greatly felt. Andrew Thomson seems to have entirely recovered from the injuries he sustained earlier in the season, and his play on Saturday could hardly have been excelled.

From newspaper reports from the time

The Third kicked off against the wind, but had not made much progress until the Celts were in the vicinity of their goal. The ball then traversed the field, but the home team were soon back, and at the end of five minutes Dunbar scored the first goal. Some back and forward play followed, and Burke had a fine shy at the Celtic goal, but was a trifle high. A couple of throw-ins looked well for the Celts, but they did not follow up the opportunity, and a combined run by the Third forwards carried the ball to the other end, where, after a throw-n, a good attempt was made at scoring. After this the Celts returned several times to the attack, but on all occasions the parting shot was wide. The Third forwards were playing up well, but the back division of the home team kept them well at bay, and the aspect of the game was decidedly in favour of the Irishman. For a long time play was confined almost entirely to the visitors’ territory, and a couple of corner kicks were secured, but from neither of them was a goal seriously threatened. A run by Watt relieved the monotony, McLaughlin being called upon, and once or twice after the visitors seemed fairly on the road to success; but their visits were brief, and, had no result except bringing out the Celtic backs a bit. Five minutes before half-time Hugh Gallagher scored number 2 and the half ended:- Celtic, 2; 3rd Lanark 0.
On resuming, Burke after a smart run, sent in a rousing shot, which McLaughlin caught but allowed it to go through. A minute later Dunbar added another point for the home team. The game had now assumed a very open character, and some good play ensued. Johnstone put on a second goal for the Third – a soft one. A sustained attack was made on the Celtic goal, but the ball eventually was sent behind. After the Third continued to do the pressing, and a corner fell to them, but like most corner kicks it came to nothing, although a shot by Johnstone which followed was very near the mark. The game continued to be contested with unflagging vigour, and excitement at times rose to the highest pitch – although tries of goal were not of frequent occurrence, neither side being allowed to settle down to a systematic attack. Hugh Gallagher, however, was instrumental in getting a fourth goal for the Celts a few minutes before the finish, and this finished the scoring, the game ended- Celtic, 4 goals; third Lanark, 2 goals.
