Collectables – Celtic Phonecards

Collectables

Before there were mobile phones….

For all the kids out there with mobile phones, note years back we never had portable mobile phones (apart from the rich yuppies in the 1980s who worked for lawyers and fancy foreign banks).

So we all had to use public phone booths! Early on it was using 10p coins, but in the 1980s/90s they introduced phone cards which was a top-up way of paying for calls at the booths. Becoming quickly popular they were customised and specialist novelty ones like below for Celtic were created.

They even became collectors items like stamps!

Mercury Phonecards

In season 1990/91 Celtic installed a series of card phones within the concourse of the Main (South) Stand. The phones were operated by telecommunication firm Mercury and fans could purchase special cards to allow them to use the phones. BT also created some as well.
