Lyrics
#Oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao,
Glasgow Celtic,
The best in Scotland,
The only team for me and you… # [Repeat ad nauseam]
Background
“Bella ciao” (Italian pronunciation: [ˈbɛlla ˈtʃaːo]; “Goodbye beautiful”) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the mondina workers in protest against the harsh working conditions in the paddy fields of Northern Italy.
It is generally accepted that the song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed nazism and fascism between 1943 and 1945 during their fight against the occupying forces of Nazi Germany, who allied with the fascist and collaborationist Italian Social Republic, although some historians argue that there is little to no evidence that Italian partisans actually sang these songs. Versions of “Bella ciao” continue to be sung worldwide as an anti-fascist or leftist hymn of freedom and resistance.
Started by the Green Brigade in August 2022, and popularised after the incredible 4-0 victory over Sevco on 3 Sep 2022. Link is due to the very left-wing politics and links between Green Brigade and others in the Ultra circuits, but also the widely respected Italian communities in Scotland & beyond.
In Nov 2022, the Real Madrid fans so impressed with the Celtic fans at the Bernabeu even joined in with the singing of this tune at this match!
