Trivia

  • This was an all ticket game and there were notices in the papers to Celtic supporters not to turn up with bottles or banners and to watch their language.
  • Ne’er Day game 1952. Disturbances began in the West End of the North Enclosure with about 20 minutes remaining with a number of fights kicking off. Spectators invaded the track to get clear of the disturbances which mostly involved fights and bottle throwing. The game however, despite the track invasion and spectators spilling onto the pitch, was not stopped. Disturbances continued around the ground after full time with arrests being made and others trying to free the arrestees from the Marias.

Review

The off-field activities were reported more extensively than the game. On the field, Celtic were well beaten, especially given the fact that Rangers played with 10 men for the last half hour. By that time, though, the damage had been done. Waddell took full advantage of the young and inexperienced John Jack and Joe Baillie had to cover for him more often. Bell was shown up for the first goal and this led to him being dropped for the next game against Hearts. Waddell’s 4th for Rangers was a free kick from the 18 yard line.
