Trivia
- Though this was not a competitive game and involved a public trial of the Celtic players contracted to the club, it is worth recording here as it gives a picture of the available players at the start of the 1955-56 season
Review
The play was not uninteresting but watched by a low number and gave the Celtic management no doubt an insight into the future team building process. It also served as a chance to look at the newer signings and to see how those that had played Reserve football in the previous season might develop in the new season and fit in with the established players.
The goalkeepers switched sides at half time, Peter Goldie replaced Vince Ryan; Duffy replaced Mike Conroy; Jimmy Rowan replaced Billy Craig; Eric Smith replaced Jim Sharkey.
Shortly after the restart and the replacements, Jimmy Docherty and Frank Whyte swapped sides.
Matt McVittie was noted as being the most outstanding of the newcomers. Also Jimmy Rowan made a good showing.
The absentees of note were John Bonnar, Jimmy McIlroy (still recovering from a triple leg break), John Higgins (recovering from cartilage surgery), Charlie Tully, Willie Fernie (who was recovering from an injury sustained during the numerous ‘fives’ competitions held in the closed season) and Bertie Peacock (who was away in Belfast with the Great Britain XI)
