Trivia
- The draw for the annual Glasgow Charities Cup was made on the 20th April and in the best traditions of hot ball – cold ball Celtic were drawn against Rangers away at Ibrox in the second round, both teams getting a bye through the first round. The earlier ties saw Third Lanark v Clyde on the 28th April (Clyde won 3-1), Partick Thistle v Qeen's Park (Thistle won 3-1) on the 30th.
- Portsmouth and Norwich City both made moves to take Dick Beattie down south. Beattie had been playing for the Reserves since the Ne'erday game and wanted to get back to first team football. The deal was not done immediately but Beattie would depart for Portsmouth in August.
- St Mirren, who had defeated Celtic comprehensively 4-0 won the Scottish Cup with a 3-1 win against Aberdeen on the 25th April.
- Duncan MacKay, Eric Smith, Bobby Evans and Bertie Auld were all included in the Scotland side to tour the continent in the closed season.
- Celtic freed Sammy Wilson, John Jack and John Higgins as well as Frank Meechan, Andy Murphy and Willie Gribben; the provisional registrations of Alec Burns (GK), John Colquhoun(RH), Jim Devine (IL), J Gallacher (IR), E Fallon (LH), J Logan (LW) were also cancelled.
Review
Since the game was for charity, the SFA applied on behalf of the teams and the game had an unrestricted attendance number with both sides warned to watch their behaviour.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Celtic went through on the toss of a coin. The only thing to marr the game was the booking of Auld in the second half. Brand scored a good goal for Rangers but Byrne equalised before half time from a long MacKay throw in.
In the second half Celtic had to defend resolutely as Rangers made the better of the wind that was in their favour. Haffey was called on to make important saves and Evans, Peacock and Mochan all made last ditch tackles. Rangers did 'score' a second only to be ruled offside and this led to a bit of a ruck between Evans and Telfer.
Clyde beat Partick Thistle 3-1 in the other second round tie to set up a final against the holders onn the Saturday at Hampden.
