Trivia
- KO: Saturday, 5.30pm, BBC Scotland TV
- Scottish Cup, Round of 16
- Kyogo comes off with what looked like a bad shoulder injury.
- Oh scores his debut goal. O’Reilly with the goal of the game to finally score his first goal of the season.
- Scottish Tory party leader Douglas Ross on duty as linesman today; Green Brigade reveal a banner in reply of “VAR decision: Douglas Ross is a [see you next time]”. Scottish Senior Football Referees’ Association approached the SFA’s compliance officer over the incident. There are currently no regulations in place in which the governing body can punish clubs for messages displayed by supporters, unlike with UEFA. The report made mention of previous political or offensive banners displayed in Scottish grounds which went unpunished, noting the Scottish Senior Football Referees’ Association’s approach is unlikely to lead to any charge against Celtic.
- 4 of the 5 Celtic goals came from substitutes.
- Celtic post big financial results as revenue rockets to £76.5m and profit rises to £33.9m (see below)
- Postecoglu linked with vacant Leeds Utd managerial position in EPL.
- Youth: Bruno Davidson signed a new Celtic contract extension to 2025.
- B team skipper Ewan Otoo agreed loan move to Dunfermline for rest of the season.
- Yosuke Ideguchi joined J-League side Avispa Fukuoka on year-long loan.
- Giorgos Giakoumakis has now officially joined Atlanta United on a permanent transfer.
- Ex-Celt Neil Lennon reportedly interested in Aberdeen managerial job but can’t take it until April (for tax purposes?); not sure if Aberdeen would want him anyway.
- Ex-Celts Mark Fotheringham and Kenny Miller sacked by Huddersfield amid relegation battle
- Manchester City charged by EPL with numerous breaches of financial rules. Talking about stripping league titles which would mean Brendan Rodgers could win an EPL title in retrospect, but irony is that Rangers (RIP) got away with it in Scotland.
- Turkey/Syria rocked by huge earthquakes with 25000+ dead, RIP. Celtic’s Foundation CFC make £10,000 donation to Red Crescent/Red Cross (@ifrc) to assist in the relief effort. Both Celtic and St Mirren wear black armbands to remember those who have lost their lives and those who have been impacted by the devastating earthquake in Turkey, Syria and the surrounding region.
- Rugby: Scotland & Ireland win.
- American football: Superbowl Sunday next day. Kansas City Chiefs defeated Philadelphia Eagles.
- European Super League announced a new proposal (but will it include Celtic?): ▪️ 60-80 teams ▪️ Multiple divisions▪️ No permanent members ▪️ Minimum of 14 games per club, per season
Summary
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “St Mirren put in a hell of a shift to stop us. It was a great contribution from the guys off the bench.
“We knew they would come at us. Cameron [Carter-Vickers] and Carl [Starfelt] were really strong, they handled it well.
[On Kyogo’s shoulder injury] “We’ll see how it is, we’ll get a scan for him tomorrow. He’s a pretty quick healer.”
“Everyone keeps saying I have to keep everyone happy. Am I supposed to go around making them cups of tea or buy their wife some flowers? They should be happy with a smile on their face every day because they’re doing what they love & representing a fantastic football club.”
Ange
“I’m pretty blessed to be in the position I am working for a special football club.”
Ange Postecoglou
St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: “Anybody who watched the game for 75 minutes, there was nothing in it, which is an amazing thing to say with the talent they have on show. We came, we pressed them and we made one mistake in the first half that we were punished for.
“The penalty [and red card for Richard Taylor] changed the whole aspect of the game. It’s hard enough with 11 men. I have nothing but praise for my players. We were very much in the game, we were brave on the ball. But that decision – rightly or wrongly, I haven’t seen it back – changes the dynamics of the game.”
jbj712 of KDS: Enjoyable evening game decent crowd and a good atmosphere credit to STM for brining a few and made a bit of noise.
Always in control especially after the early goal. Pleased for Maeda that he got it the guy works his socks off going forward and defending plus he doesn’t let anyone try to bully him.
McLean showing he has a brass neck by blanking the most blatant handball I’ve seen in a while. People at the other end of the ground could see it was a penalty let alone those closer.
The tackle on Mooy just before he went off should have been a red card as it was late and down the back of his Achilles. I noticed Mooy speaking to the ref as he went off so hopefully he let him know what a cheat he is.
The ref continually allowed blocks off the ball which anywhere else in the football world would have been fouls and cards. The STM who got hurt just before half time actually fouled Johnson in this way but he picked the wrong guy and came off worse
Good to see we kept going after they got their penalty and finished them off 5 – 1 much better look than 3 – 1
Take anyone in the next round especially at home so no doubt a trip away to Inverness beckons.
If so I hope we score 10 and bury them good and proper!
Etims: FT #Celtic 5 St Mirren 1 Below par first half. Game ended as contest when Celts got Penalty & Saints Red following red card for handball denying a goal. After that Celts exploited space. Buddies one of the better teams we’ve faced domestically. Oh with first Celtic goal
This VAR check on Johnston is ridiculous. Nothing there at all. No wonder we are paranoid against this shower of Shite at the @ScottishFA
@agentscotland: Second time in a few weeks I thought St Mirren came to Celtic Park and played reasonably well and twice they’ve been on the end of a tanking, wouldn’t say Celtic played brilliantly well tonight but the quality of their finishing was sensational, they’re just absolutely lethal.
@AgentScotland · 10h No idea what Douglas Ross was doing officiating tonight, overweight, slow & not remotely fit enough to run the line in the lowland league let alone high profile cup tie, an SFA favourite so imagine they’re trying to get him upto speed for the Final, shouldn’t be near this level.
@AgentScotland · 10h I’ve seen enough of Oh Hyeon-gyu to believe he’ll be a huge success for Celtic, great work rate, good touch too, excellent strength, can play with his back to goal, links up play well & his direct running when the ball is in wide areas causes defenders all sorts of problems.

Tireless forward Daizen Maeda opened the scoring from close range in the 16th minute but the visitors, the only domestic side to beat Celtic this season, showed some spirit and ambition. However, substitute Reo Hatate netted from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after Buddies defender Richard Taylor was sent off by referee Steven McLean for conceding the VAR-confirmed spot-kick with a hand to prevent a certain goal. Fellow sub Oh Hyeon-gyu slammed in his first Celtic goal in the 80th minute before Stephen Robinson’s side reduced the deficit with a Mark O’Hara penalty.
Ange Postecoglou’s side, as always, kept going and substitute Matt O’Riley fired in from the edge of the box before Hatate added a fifth with a similarly impressive strike in added time. The treble-chasing home side, with midfielder David Turnbull in for Hatate, made their usual swift start.

There were only a couple of minutes played before Saints, who had Taylor and Declan Gallagher back for Charles Dunne and Greg Kiltie, had Trevor Carson to thank for the first time.
Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi suffered injury in the first half.
Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi suffered injury in the first half.
The Buddies keeper parried a powerful drive from Portuguese winger Jota past the post for a corner which failed to trouble the visitors.
The Paisley side tried to push forward but trouble was never far away and in the 11th minute Maeda shanked a cross only to see it rebound off Carson’s far post.
Fellow Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi went off with what looked like a shoulder injury to be replaced by winger Liel Abada with Maeda moving through the middle.
Moments later he was in the right place to convert Aaron Mooy’s cross for the opener, after the Australia international had been sent down the wing by Abada.
Far from collapsing, the Buddies fought back and Hoops defender Cameron Carter-Vickers headed away a shot from Alex Greive, who subsequently sustained an injury and was replaced by former Celt Tony Watt, recently signed from Dundee United.
St Mirren striker Curtis Main was proving a handful for the Hoops defence but it was his defensive block which prevented Celtic defender Carl Starfelt from firing in a second just before the break.
Robinson’s side came out for the second half in positive fashion again but enjoyed some luck when a cutback from right-back Alistair Johnston struck Buddies defender Marcus Fraser and rebounded off a post.
Postecoglou made a triple substitution around the hour mark with Hatate, O’Riley and Oh coming on for Turnbull, Mooy and Jota.
Still St Mirren kept pushing forward in numbers but still they were unable to really test goalkeeper Joe Hart.
There was a long VAR check in the 71st minute after Abada’s close-range shot came off Taylor.
Referee McLean looked at his monitor and pointed to the spot to a huge cheer from the home fans before he sent off Taylor for using a hand and Hatate stepped up and slammed the ball into the corner of the net.
There were more cheers when Oh grabbed a third with a low drive after Carson had parried a long-distance effort from skipper Callum McGregor.
Saints pulled a goal back from the spot moments later after Starfelt had tripped substitute Kiltie, with captain O’Hara beating Hart from 12 yards.
But Celtic responded with late strikes from O’Riley and Hatate to add gloss to the scoreline.
Celtic’s financial results laid bare: why profits rose, losses expected for second part of year, future plans, Barrowfield update
Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell has released the club’s interim report for the six months to December 31, 2022, with the cinch Premiership champions reporting a 44 per cent increase in revenue a pre-tax profit of £33.9million
Mark Atkinson
By Mark Atkinson
Delivering his first report since returning to the club, former chief executive Lawwell communicated strong figures for the first half of the financial year, largely down to the club being back in the Champions League. However, the chairman warned that figures are not expected to be as healthy in the next six months as earnings are “biased toward the first part of the year”.
“I am honoured to present my first Chairman’s statement on behalf of Celtic Football Club,” wrote Lawwell on Celtic’s official website. “Being back to chair the club that I have always supported and served for almost 18 years as CEO, is a privilege. I look forward to fulfilling the role, and playing my part in our club going forward.
“The results for the six months ended 31 December 2022 show revenues of £76.5m (2021: £52.9m) and a profit before taxation of £33.9m (2021: profit before tax of £27.6m). The profit from trading, representing the profit excluding player related gains and charges, amounted to £28.1m (2021: profit of £7.0m).
Champions League importance
“The key factors driving the improvement in the underlying trading performance in the six months to 31 December 2022 compared to the same period last year, was the direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League Group stages. This was the key driver in our revenue increase over the same period last year which reflected UEFA Europa League Group stage participation. Gains from player trading this year of £1.8m (2021: £25.8m) were notably lower, reflecting our strategy of assembling a new football playing squad under our football manager, Ange Postecoglou. Period end net cash at bank was £59.2m (2021: £25.6m). After adjusting for a net trading balance on prior inbound and outbound transfers, this sum reduces to £50.2m at December 2022 (2021: £39.7m). The introductory page to these interim results summarises the key events in the period.
“This year is the second season under Ange and the success delivered in season 2021/22 in securing the SPFL title ensured we qualified directly for the UEFA Champions League Group stages for season 2022/23. This allowed us to plan and execute our transfer business early. Following from the permanent signings of Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Joao Pedro Neves Filipe (Jota), we went on to sign Alexandro Bernabei, Sead Haksabanovic, Aaron Mooy, Benjamin Siegrist and brought in loan signings Oliver Abildgaard and Moritz Jenz.
“As the season got under way in August, we were presented with a tough Champions League Group stage draw, alongside 14 times Champions League winners Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk. Despite a number of strong footballing performances we all shared Ange’s disappointment in not progressing further, but took heart from the competitive performances and experience gained by our young team which will serve them well in future European competition.
“On domestic footballing matters, we currently sit 9 points ahead at the top of the SPFL Premiership, have reached the Viaplay Cup Final and have reached the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. We sit in a satisfactory position domestically, but strive to keep improving as a club and during the January transfer window we further added to the squad by signing Alistair Johnston, Yuki Kobayashi, Tomoki Iwata (loan with obligation to buy) and Hyeongyu Oh. Josip Juranovic, Oliver Abildgaard, Moritz Jenz, Scott Robertson and Giorgos Giakoumakis moved on to continue their careers elsewhere and we wish them all the best for the future.
“Our B Team continues to develop in the Lowland League under Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus. A key objective of our B Team and Academy is to develop first team players and already this season B Team players Bosun Lawal and Rocco Vata have made their first team debuts. This is a major milestone and achievement for our young players and reflects our strategy of developing Academy players through our system. Our Women’s team also continues to progress under Fran Alonso and at the time of writing we sit second in the league and are in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
“As we look ahead, our immediate priority is to secure domestic success for season 2022/23, with a view to progressing into the Champions League Group stages for a second consecutive year. We also wish to build upon the progress made in our Academy and the Women’s team, and are currently exploring development opportunities at our Barrowfield training ground with a view to enhancing the facilities for these squads. We will also continue to contribute to the development of UEFA European Club Competition through participation in the European Club Association. The forthcoming changes to European Club Competition from 2024 onwards bring a number of exciting changes that we will embrace and look to take advantage of.”
Forecast for next six months
Lawwell did strike a word of caution for the next set of results, however, predicting losses due to a handful of factors. He continued: “In line with the seasonality inherent in our earnings profile, the second half of the financial year will see losses incurred, as our earnings are biased toward the first half of the financial year. These losses however will be in part mitigated by gains on player trading realised from the January 2023 transfer window along with greater revenue from operating activities than was previously anticipated. The bias in earnings towards the first half of the financial year reflects the fact that UEFA distributions and UEFA match ticket income are largely recognised in the first half of the financial year and as in previous years, the second half of the financial year typically sees lower retail sales. Our outturn earnings can also be materially impacted by football success and the year end assessment of player registration carrying values. Taking all of this into consideration, we would expect our total outturn profit before tax for the year ending 30 June 2023 to be significantly lower than the result posted for the first six months of the financial year.
“On behalf of the Board, I wish to thank our supporters for their unwavering dedication and support of our Club. I wish to also thank our shareholders and commercial partners for continuing to back the Club as they have done over many years.”

Celtic reached the Scottish Cup quarter-finals with victory over 10-man St Mirren but their joy may be tempered by an apparent shoulder injury sustained by striker Kyogo Furuhashi.
Daizen Maeda turned in Aaron Mooy’s cross for Celtic’s first and after the break three substitutes scored four.
Reo Hatate slammed home a penalty after Richard Taylor had been sent off for handball and Oh Hyeon-gyu poked home.
Saints’ Mark O’Hara scored a penalty before Matt O’Riley and Hatate strikes.

St Mirren news, views, features and video content
Supporters seemed to be in the mood for a Saturday night cup tie. They created a noisy, smoky scene at kick-off but St Mirren goalkeeper Trevor Carson could see enough through the smog to palm Jota’s fierce shot away after the Portuguese winger’s early mazy run.
Stephen Robinson’s side are the only team in Scotland to have beaten Celtic this season. They showed an appetite to get the ball forward quickly, with the impressive Keanu Baccus feeding Scott Tanser down the left, though Carl Starfelt snuffed out the danger.
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou had made only one change from the team that beat St Johnstone last weekend – David Turnbull in for Hatate – but he was forced into another early on when Kyogo suffered a shoulder injury after falling awkwardly.
On came Liel Abada and within two minutes he had slipped a pass into the box for Aaron Mooy, who slid the ball across for Maeda to turn in the opener. By that point the Japanese forward had already hit the far post with a wayward cross.
St Mirren responded admirably and Cameron Carter-Vickers bravely diverted a goal-bound shot from Alex Greive over the bar after the forward had spun Starfelt. Greive later limped off to be replaced by Tony Watt, while Starfelt was only denied a goal late in the first half by a vital block by Curtis Main.
Celtic held Saints in a stranglehold for much of the second half, spraying the ball across midfield and causing St Mirren to spend a lot of energy matching runs.
The visitors survived a scare when Fraser knocked Alistair Johnston’s cross against his own post and, following a triple substitution when O’Riley, Oh and Hatate replaced Mooy, Jota and Turnbull, Abada put a header horribly wide from Maeda’s cross with the goal at his mercy.
Taylor was sent off for handball, preventing a goal-bound shot following a VAR check by referee Steven McLean. Hatate lashed the spot-kick inside the post and Oh scored his first Celtic goal when he responded quickly to Carson’s parry from Callum McGregor’s drive.
Trailing 3-0, St Mirren captain O’Hara tucked away his late penalty with aplomb after Greg Kiltie had been upended by Starfelt, but the Paisley side were left reeling by two goals in added time by O’Riley and Hatate, both blasting shots past Carson from central positions as Celtic attacked to the final whistle.
Player of the match – Daizen Maeda
Daizen Maeda scores
Daizen Maeda has scored nine goals for Celtic and one for Japan in 39 appearances this season. His constant movement and seemingly endless energy cause problems for defenders and it was his performance that set the tone for his team-mates in the Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park.
