Summary
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “In the first half I thought we were outstanding. The speed, intensity and quality of our football was excellent and we could have had a couple more goals.
“What I’m really pleased about is our performances have been really consistent and we’re getting stronger each week.”
Ange
Aberdeen interim manager Barry Robson: “I’m frustrated. We were starting to build momentum with a group that were really fragile.
“But you come to Celtic, lose that first goal and can see that fragility come back. When a team’s that good against you, it’s hard to really have a go. And when you lose a goal so early it makes things really difficult.”
“He would have been fine but John Kennedy kept telling me ‘look, he is getting really angry, you better put him on. So I didn’t have much choice. I thought he was going to sneak on at one point. I just thought before the game it was good chance to get Oh some minutes. Kyogo has been outstanding in recent times and it was going to be hard for us to find a game for Oh with the fact we are only playing a game a week at the moment. I didn’t want to go too long without giving Oh a start and I thought today was a good opportunity to do that. But Kyogo is fine, he is raring to go and looking forward to next week.”
Ange Postecoglou on Celtic striker’s late arrival in win
Torquemeda of KDS: I thought we were just a little bit self-indulgent today, overplaying when we should have been scoring eight or nine. We know we’re ten times better than every other team in the league, including Beale’s bunch of hangers-on, but we should be burying teams instead of allowing them to stay in the game, no matter how hopelessly. Reo Hatate is this generation’s Lubo. How he escaped notice for so long, and how we managed to steal him – and it was a steal – is the stuff of Celtic legend. He is a sublime footballer.
@stephen42: Fantastic away support today at Parkhead. Considering the crap Aberdeen fans have had to contend with recently and the distance they need to travel then fair play to them. Says a lot for them.
@agentscotland:Celtic dominance from the first minute and goals from McGregor & Hatate saw them cruise to a halftime lead, only sniff the Dons got was some Celtic slackness in the 2nd half beforw Hatate and Abada put the icing on the cake of a really strong performance.A midfield masterclass once again from Reo Hatate this afternoon, he’s getting better by the month and his ceiling is way higher than anyone else in Scottish Football, he’s been the stand out footballer in Scottish football in 2022-23 IMO & already my tip for Player of the Year. McGregor is brilliant, no doubt about it but for pure performances I think Reo has been better this season, when CalMac missed about six weeks through injury I felt Hatate become that go to guy who really drove the midfield on and showed a different side to his game.
Etims: Outstanding first half. Should have been more than 2 goals ahead. Pretty boring 30 mins from HT onwards as Dons sat in and we just kept possession. Subs added more intensity as we scored two late goals. CalMac and Reo ran the show…again

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou on the surprise group who can take team to ‘another level’
Utilising fringe players can be a thought to give managers kittens.
Andrew Smith

Ange Postecoglou sees the situation differently. More minutes for players who have struggled for these among his Celtic squad in recent times is the means by which he believes his Celtic side can remain the cat’s pyjamas. With Celtic last week hitting the 100-mark for goals in all competitions this season, the capacity for ratcheting up performance levels over the remaining three months-and-a-bit of the campaign would appear limited. Postecoglou, though, is homing in on surprising a band of players to supply his side with added vim.
Between them – for a variety of reasons – Tomoki Iwata, Yuki Kobayashi, Sead Haksabanovic, James Forrest, Anthony Ralston and Alexandro Bernebei have precisely seven starts since the turn of the year. That, though, ensures they are sure to be mint fresh for the run in as Celtic chase a clean sweep of domestic honours. A year ago, Postecoglou’s men were being talked about as a 60-minute team for their propensity to flag later in games. Now, they have a coterie of alternatives – to which striker Oh Hyeon-gyu can be added – that obviates the need to squeeze much more than an hour out of any players. The Australian is convinced, in his chomping-at-the-bit squad men, Celtic can display even more bite.
“There are always areas to improve. Our players want to improve,” said the 57-year-old. “They come in here every day looking for improvement and asking us for ways they can do that. I think our football is improving. I think we’re playing better now than we were at the start of the year and we were playing pretty well at the start of the year. My role is to keep pushing and to keep trying to improve.

“There are still guys who want to make more of a contribution and haven’t had much of a chance particularly lately with a game a week. Iwata, Kobayashi, Haksabanovic, Forrest … all of these guys haven’t been able to contribute as much as they would have liked. We’ve [also] got [Anthony] Ralston back [from injury] and [Alexandro] Bernaabei is available. The games will come thick and fast pretty quickly and I think those guys contributing will help us and sort of take us to another level as well.”
Celtic’s apparent ability to renew themselves by revolving their personnel within games would seem to be highlighted by two statistics. The first is that five of their past nine goals have been netted by substitutes. The second is that the two peaks for their Premiership goal plundering are between 51 and 60 minutes, and 81 and 90 minutes.
“Having a strong squad is one thing, but it’s how the players embrace that challenge,” said the Celtic manager. “I think you’ve seen that the guys are taking on that challenge in the right way. Whether they are starting or not, they want to make an impact and a contribution. From my perspective that’s what I’m looking for. The first minute of a football game is just as important as the last so whoever finishes is just as important as who starts. Sometimes it’s the guys at the end who are getting the rewards for the work put in by the guys who start a game of football.”
Ange Postecoglou on Celtic crowd numbers, Ally McCoist offer to drive him to Leeds, and the only stat that matters
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has maintained that the numbers flocking to watch his team provide him with greater job satisfaction than any silverware totals ever could.

The treble-chasing Scottish champions’ encounter at home to Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon sold-out weeks ago. It marks the third time in four Premiership outings that every seat will have been snapped up for a league fixture at Celtic Park. A period during which almost 80,000 were attracted to the stadium for two Scottish Cup ties – crowd returns for such one-off ties not previously witnessed this millennium.
The clearest indicators of how Postecoglou’s high-octane, free-scoring playing style is proving box office dynamite for the Celtic faithful, the Australian prizes this above all. “For me that’s the most important thing. Ultimately that’s our biggest measure,” said the Celtic manager, whose side will be looking to retain a nine-point advantage in the title race by extending their 100 per cent home league record to 13 games.
“Of course trophies are what this football club is about and that’s my role – to bring success. But the biggest encouragement or rewards we can get is people wanting to come and watch their football club. I don’t take that for granted. No one in the club does. Even cup games, it’s a choice sometimes whether they come or not but they are coming in record numbers.

“They are not just appreciating the fact that we are winning games of football. I think they are appreciating how the boys are playing and they are excited by that. For me, that’s the greatest reward. It’s always been my barometer during my whole career. Fans will tell me how I’m going, more than the table or anything else. We can be winning games of football but if our supporters don’t like what they see then I’ll get that feedback for sure. For me, it’s very rewarding that they are not just appreciating the fact that we’re winning games of football but they are enjoying the way we are doing it.”
Celtic’s apparent unerring capacity for registering victories in the domestic environment is wearying those beyond the club’s camp on the back of 27 wins, a draw and only one defeat in 29 such outings. Amidst the speculation linking Postecoglou with Leeds United, Livingston manager David Martindale joked he had already sent his counterpart’s CV to Elland Road, while Rangers legend and television pundit Ally McCoist said light-heartedly he would drive the 57-year-old to England himself. Asked if he took this joshing as a compliment, the Celtic manager said, tongue-in-cheek: “I wouldn’t struggle for a lift, mate… I’ve got plenty of people who’d take me, or I could drive myself. Listen, again it’s all stuff that’s not on my radar. My measure is the people who love this football club. That’s the only feedback I’m looking for. They’ll tell me how I’m going more than anyone else. That’s always going to be my barometer.”
A week before the bitter rivals face off in the Viaplay League Cup final, Rangers manager Michael Beale has stressed the importance of that showpiece is in part framed by the “low probability” of overhauling an in-form Celtic in the title race. Postecoglou chooses not to engage with that assessment. ‘We’ve got to win tomorrow, mate,” he said. “That’s all. I’ve said before that my role in all of that is that we want to finish the season strong – stronger than how we started. If we win all of our games, we don’t have to worry about anything else or anyone else or what anyone else is saying, or forecasting in terms of percentages. If we win every game between now and the end of the year, here’s a percentage for you … 100 per cent we will win the league. So why would we think beyond that?”

‘I played in some good Celtic teams, they are a top team’ says interim as he craves Aberdeen side ‘really at it’ in Glasgow following loss
Aberdeen interim manager Bobby Robson revealed where he rated the current Celtic side in the pantheon of successful sides following a thumping 4-0 defeat in Glasgow’s east end.

And Robson, whose two-year spell with Celtic from 2008 included in him netting in a Champions League last 16 tie against Barcelona, was left to lament being unable to send out at Pittodrie side with the oomph he exhibited as a player. Undermining “fragility” betrayed in the loss of a second-minute goal central to that, he believed.
“In the two games last week we started [to address] that,” he said, after his club’s miserable run was extended to one win in seven. “It doesn’t just come back in one or two games, I’ve been there as a player. It takes small steps. They are a top team. I played in some good Celtic teams here and they are a top team. They move you about and it’s hard to trigger presses. The pleasing thing for me is they came out again in the second half, we hung there and fought. I said to them, ‘boys, let’s get ready for the next game, let’s go and do it and start moving up that table’.
“I want an Aberdeen team coming down here really flipping at it and that takes time. It’s not a case of saying to the boys: ‘why are you not doing this and that?’ They’ve had a hard time of it. I’m just here and I’m trying to help them. What I saw was boys who wanted to fight and show a bit of character and were brave. I saw that when we were down to 10 men for 85 minutes [the other week].”

Celtic head into next weekend’s Viaplay Cup final with their nine-point Scottish Premiership lead intact after Reo Hatate inspired a hammering of Aberdeen.
A blistering opening yielded goals for Callum McGregor and Hatate as Celtic threatened to blow the managerless visitors away.
Aberdeen marginally improved on a dreadful first-half display, but failed to register an effort on target and Hatate and substitute Liel Abada franked Celtic’s superiority late on.
The Pittodrie side’s defeat – their second in three games under interim boss Barry Robson – keeps them seventh. But they have now lost seven straight away league matches for the first time in 24 years.
Celtic turn their focus to retaining the League Cup in an Old Firm derby at Hampden after a 15th Premiership home win in a row.
“Reo was great and he has been all year,” said manager Ange Postecoglou of the Japan midfielder.
“He is constantly looking to improve and is not going to rest until he is the footballer he wants to be in his own mind.”
When these sides last met, Aberdeen – still with Jim Goodwin at the helm – sat deep at Pittodrie in December and held out for 87 minutes before succumbing to a 1-0 defeat.
This time they caved in before two minutes had elapsed as Celtic set the tone for an utterly dominant performance.
The only surprise was the lead was just two goals by the break. McGregor pounced when a Greg Taylor cross was only partially cleared and rifled in a thunderous low opener that Jay Gorter got a hand to and perhaps should have kept out.
Aberdeen were getting plenty of men behind the ball, but lacked aggression and defensive cohesion. The second goal was a case in point. McGregor shuttled a pass to Hatate, who had three opponents in close proximity but plenty of time to pick his spot in the bottom corner.
Celtic were running amok down the flanks, exploiting the channels either side of Aberdeen’s back three, and the visitors’ only hope of a goal looked to stem from Joe Hart’s carelessness.
The Celtic goalkeeper sent a stray pass to Jonny Hayes, and later made a mess of dealing with a Carl Starfelt passback after rushing out of his penalty box, but Aberdeen were unable to capitalise.
Celtic roared back to finish strongly and put a truer reflection on the scoreline. Their third was all about Hatate, as the midfielder won possession then released McGregor and bombed forward in support. When the ball rebounded to Hatate, he lashed it past Gorter.
The Aberdeen keeper was beaten again when he got fingers to Abada’s strike from fellow substitute Sead Haksabanovic’s low delivery, but could not stop it flying into the top corner.
Celtic’s relentless form continues unabated. Their only blemish in the last 19 league games is two dropped points in the new year derby at Ibrox, and from the moment they surged ahead in the second minute this win was never really in doubt.
Kyogo Furuhashi – back fit after his injury scare – wasn’t risked from the off as Oh Hyeon-gyu was given a chance to impress on his first start.
The South Korea striker provided a physical presence and linked well with supporting runners, but talisman Kyogo will undoubtedly be back to shoulder Celtic’s hopes at Hampden.
If Robson wants the Aberdeen job on a permanent basis, this defeat has surely hampered his prospects. Defeat at Celtic Park is no disgrace, but Aberdeen were miles off it.
Their back three was cruelly exposed but Robson opted not to change things until sending on defender Hayden Coulson for striker Bojan Miovski at the break.
His side struggled to make it out of their own half in a pitiful first-half display, and had no impact up front throughout.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “In the first half I thought we were outstanding. The speed, intensity and quality of our football was excellent and we could have had a couple more goals.
“What I’m really pleased about is our performances have been really consistent and we’re getting stronger each week.”
