- The last league game of the season. This game was a chance for Celtic to consolidate a position at the top of the League table where they were vying for second position with Hearts and Kilmarnock.
- John McNamee was transferred to Hibernian for £15000. He had last played for the first team on the last day of February and was seen as a stand in for Billy McNeill at centre half. McNamee had joined Celtic in 1959 from Bellshill.
- Both Reserve teams were in action. The A Reserves of Haffey, MacKay, O'Neill, Cattanach, Cushley, J Brogan, Lennox, Turner, Spencer, Price, F Brogan were roundly beaten by Hearts Reserves. The Combined Reserves played out a 2-2 draw with Queen's Park Strollers with a team of Madden, Halpin, Parkes, 'Junior', McCarron, Lawson, 'Newman', Curley, McCallum, Gillan, 'Newman'.
- This was an unchanged team from the side that had done so well against MTK Budapest in midweek. Hearts also played their strongest team and both teams were aware of the fight for second place
Review
Celtic thoroughly outplayed Hearts in the first half on the base of an early goal from Stevie Chalmers coming from a Jimmy Johnstone cross. Despite plenty of pressure in the first half they could not find a second. When they took their foot off the gas in the second half with Hearts clearly upping their game the inevitable equaliser came from Hamilton, who had switched wings with Traynor. Thereafter though they tried to push the pace they just could not get back ahead.
