- The aftermath of the brutal League Cup game against Kilmarnock was known after McNeill and Murdoch returned from hospital. McNeill had chipped his ankle, was in plaster and would be out for some time. Likewise Bobby Murdoch who had torn knee ligaments. Murdoch was at kleast walking and his recovery would be sooner than McNeill's.
- Celtic stepped in and signed Ronnie Simpson from Hibernian. Simpson had thought that his career was over when he was dropped from the first team midway through the last season and then put on the transfer list. With Frank Haffey seeking to move away from Celtic bedause of a lack of first team involvement, signing Simpson made good sense particularly as Celtic only had to pay a nominal fee. At 34 he was hardly in the prime of life but he was a very experienced keeper and had made some brillianrt saves and moves and was always committed.
- Rangers were unchanged from the side that beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1 at Ibrox during the week.
- For McNeill and Murdoch, in stepped Cushley and Divers; John Clark was also out with Jim Brogan coming in and John Hughes continued on the left with Lennox still injured.
- The game was watched by Billy Wright, manager of Arsenal. He denied that he was up to make a £100,000 bid for Jim Baxter of Rangers.
- The game was played in continuous rain.
- The A Reserves also played Rangers A reserves. The team was Haffey; MacKay, O'Neill; Henderson, McCarron, Billy Kilgannon; Curley, Joe Hoey, Tommy Spencer, Cattanach, Tony Taylor.

Review
It had to happen before too long and Celtic had their first win over Rangers in the League for 4 seasons. Playing without 2 regulars they fully deserved the win. They even missed a penalty awarded when Jinky was brought down in the area, Ritchie just tipping Gallacher's spotkick onto the post. Hughes had the ball in the net early but was penalised for a foul. Steve Chalmers got the first goal when Jinky weaved his magic on the right beating three defenders before sending over a cross that Chalmers nailed with a header past Ritchie. The second goal again came from a Jinky cross which went to the far post and Hughes headed back for Chalmers to hammer into the net. Hughes got the third bursting through the Rangers defense to send in a low shot which Ritchie fumbled and allowed to slip into the net. Wilson got a consolation goal nine minutes from time.
