  • KO: 12:15; Saturday;
  • Scottish Cup quarter-finals
  • Celtic going for the treble having won the league cup.
  • Second meet up in 4 days (Celtic defeated Hearts in the league 3-1 a few days back). Some sourness from Hearts from that game as their manager made nonsense claims that Bernabei should have been sent off (it wasn’t a red card), basically a sore loser.
  • Maeda out injured; Starfelt went off injured at ht in this match.
  • Referee was a joke; seemed to have lost his yellow card in the first half! Heart’s Halliday lucky not to be sent off.
  • Hearts manager Robbie Neilson’s Celtic ‘decapitation’ comment was aimed at pressurising officials, says former Parkhead striker Chris Sutton.
  • Celtic draw Sevco in the next round (semi-finals) of the Scottish Cup.
  • Celtic ‘set’ for South Korea pre season trip in combination with glamorous Japan tournament invite
  • Report: Ange Postecoglou on Tottenham ‘shortlist’.
  • Celtic are reported to be set to appoint Man City Football Group scouting account manager Joe Dudgeon in a recruitment role after agreeing terms
  • Report: Atletico Madrid and two English clubs are tracking ex-Celtic striker Moussa Dembele, whose contract with Lyon – who spent £20m on the forward – runs out in the summer.
  • World Cup winner (2002) Kleberson says there was an “opportunity” to sign for Celtic prior to the Brazil midfielder’s move to Manchester United.
  • “Former Manchester United right-back Paul Parker believes Scott McTominay needs to leave Old Trafford but while he doesn’t feel the Scotland midfielder is good enough for Celtic, he thinks a move to [Sevco] is a possibility.” (the Scotsman newspaper)
  • Reports claim a working party has suggested the creation of a new ten-team conference league featuring four Premiership B teams.
  • The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press.
  • Motd TV show: presenter Gary Lineker was pulled off air by the BBC because he refused to issue a public apology for his tweets criticising the government’s Illegal Migration Bill, according to sources close to him. Lineker rejects the idea he breached social media guidelines. Saturday’s Match of the Day & Sportscene di not have studio presenter or pundits after contributors pull out in solidarity with Gary Lineker. Various shows in Scotland also impacted in solidarity but not as much as could have been.
  • Kenny Dalglish is the only Celtic player to have won all six of the major trophies in Scotland and England on offer, snaring the Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup with Celtic before going on to take the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup in England with Liverpool. Former Rangers winger Andrei Kanchelskis also did it with the Ibrox outfit and Manchester United. Joe Hart to date has five of those medals under lock and key and is three matches away from the full set.

Summary

Hearts’ Scottish Cup dream decapitated by Celtic ” – @chuckleslevert

“We are so lucky to have our fans behind us wherever we go,” Joe Hart

“I don’t know how many games I’ve managed but I’ve never won one with a mind game. I don’t even know what mind games are,”
Postecoglou

Cameron Carter-Vickers: Celtic centre-back is ‘best defender in Scotland’, says Ange Postecoglou

El Salto of KDS:
Easy win, started like we meant business, dominated most of the first half and sealed it before half time. Halliday on Johnston in the box was as clear a penalty as you’ll see, not even looked at. Hill going in dangerously on Hart at their only chance, again not reviewed. Big Joe was not happy.
Second half we were in training mode, Stewart on co comms saying that it was even because Hearts had more of the ball, but in reality Celtic were doing just enough and no more. If we really wanted to turn the screw it could have got really messy for Neilson’s cluggers. Third goal was a bonus from one of the best players on the pitch.
Solid win, the media were waiting on a slip up, well not from this team.
Best for me were Johnston, CCV, Jota and Hatate in spells. Big Yuki looked very impressive when he came on.

BFB of KDS:
Cracking result as the juggernaut rolls on and on. All three goals class, especially the back flick from the maestro Kyogo.

A mention for Big Joe. Great double save down at his near post. Putting his head right in the danger zone for the cause.

Nice to see Kobayashi get more minutes under his belt. Any players that come on during the game fit in seamlessly. I think this lad will be a good ‘un.

Frightening to think how good we’ll end up if there is further strengthening in the summer.

Etims: Special word of praise for Yuki Kobayashi. Came on at HT and didn’t put a foot wrong. Tight to attackers. Competed in the air. Composure and touch of quality with the ball at his feet. Very EARLY days but that was impressive.

@cfcliamk96: Carter vickers is so far above the level of his opponents that its frighteningly easy for him. A superb player. Shame he was injured for so many CL games where he could really test himself

Celtic’s murmuration of starlings far too nifty for Hearts – but Jambos can take crumbs of comfort from Europe development

This 3-0 triumph for Celtic was another convincing win that not only heightened their hopes of winning the domestic treble, but it was also a performance that may yet offer Hearts some solace.

There was precious little to soothe the Tynecastle side’s anguish as they got their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie off to a disastrous start, conceding the opening goal after just two minutes, and losing another two, in the 45th and 80th minutes. It saw their dream of winning silverware this season wither and die but should Celtic or Rangers progress to the final and lift the trophy then a third-place finish in the league would see Robbie Neilson’s men guaranteed a Europa League entry point and group stage Conference League football at the very least next term.

In this kind of form, it is difficult to see who would be able to thwart Ange Postecoglou’s men. A dynamic and rhythmic side, like a murmuration of starlings, they swoop, twist, turn and dance their way from one point to another. Capable of the kind of intelligent movement and the energy and incisiveness that terrorises opponents, their use of space leaves rivals running around daft. It is also why they are on a seemingly unrelenting and unfaltering journey towards a clean sweep of the domestic silverware. Not that the Parkhead manager or players would voice such a belief.

But actions speak louder than words. With the Viaplay Cup already in the swag bag and the cushion of a nine-point lead as they head into the final 10 games of the Premiership campaign, Celtic have lost just one domestic match all season and although up against the third best club in the country, from as early as the second minute of the contest they looked destined for a place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup. Having built up such a head of steam, they will take some stopping.

On any other day Aaron Mooy’s second minute opener might have dented hopes but not destroyed them. Hearts, though, were denied the services of their top goalscorer Lawrence Shankland, back up striker Stephen Humphrys and other attacking options, such as Yutaro Oda, never mind the experience of Robert Snodgrass, who ran out of time in the battle for fitness. In such circumstances, the fight to restore parity never mind overhaul Celtic’s lead was a forlorn one. Especially as Celtic are so adept at punishing teams with the audacity to press forward, leaving space to exploit.

Hearts had managed to keep the Glasgow side at bay for an hour at Celtic Park on Wednesday before losing all three points, and there had been moments of positivity in that display to foster belief as the teams resumed hostilities in Gorgie. But inside the first minute Reo Hatate forced stand-in skipper Zander Clark to parry. He was helpless a minute later when Jota scuttled down the right flank before cutting back to Mooy, whose clean connection sent the ball fizzing past the Hearts keeper. If the goal was a jolt, it was less of a shock to hear Celtic fans, who had staged a pyro protest pre-match, glorifying terrorists in song just four minutes into the contest. When things are so dazzling on the pitch, that ugliness, along with the bouts of sectarian singing still tarnish things.

At the other end of the pitch, the Gorge Ultras gathered in the Gorgie Stand. Hearts have had their own sectarian issues but the new fans’ group, hoping to crank up the matchday volume, have said that they will oust anyone caught indulging in such moronic singalongs from their ranks. It is a lesson to the big Glasgow two. But on the pitch, it was the league leaders who were providing the education.

Postecoglou made five changes from the midweek encounter, his counterpart Robbie Neilson made two. While the Celtic gaffer was still able to cram the teamline with quality options which overflowed onto his subs list, the home boss couldn’t even fill his bench, naming seven substitutes rather than the permitted nine as big performers such as Craig Gordon, Craig Halkett, Liam Boyce, Beni Baningime, Peter Haring, Gary Mackay-Steven, Shankland, Snodgrass, Humphrys, and Oda – at least half of whom would be starters – continue their rehabilitations.
Stephen Kingsley’s dejected outlook sums up Hearts day as Celtic celebrate.

The men who were involved failed to halt Jota’s progress for that first goal or marshall Mooy. They also proved unable to beat Joe Hart when opportunities did come their way. While Zander Clark was the busier of the two keepers, Hearts did test the Englishman – as did Cameron Carter-Vickers with a wild clearance that almost ended in his own net. Midway through the first half, Hart had to get his mitts to a Toby Sibbick close-range effort. He then reacted quickly to deny James Hill the follow up.

The home side grew into the game but it was Celtic’s threat that was omnipresent. Even Postecoglou had been raving about Kyogo Furahashi’s movement hailing it as the best he’s ever seen but despite the warnings Hearts were unable to tether the Japanese forward and when Alistair Johnston drilled in a low delivery, he darted in to steer it past Clark with some lovely footwork.

It was more of a contest in the second half but when Hearts got the ball upfield, trying to utilise the pace of Josh Ginnelly, the player, who had netted six goals in his previous six games was too isolated and Celtic were able to turn the screw in the 80th minute when Carter-Vickers headed home substitute Matt O’Riley’s free-kick to make it 13 wins on the bounce in all competitions for a side building some impressive momentum.

For Hearts all thoughts return to the league and the need to cement third place. Now, though, they will be wishing the Celtic and Rangers safe passage to the cup final to aid their European ambitions.

Hearts 0 Celtic 3 as Jambos crash out of Scottish Cup in sobering Tynecastle loss – three things we learned
Story by Ryan Thom

Hearts crashed out of the Scottish Cup after a devastating home loss to Celtic.

Robbie Neilson’s side were hoping to return to Hampden after reaching the final last season, but they suffered the worst possible start after Aaron Mooy ghosted into the box unchallenged to slot home. That early setback seemed to rattle the hosts with the Tynecastle faithful growing frustrated as the men in maroon struggled to gain any momentum.

Hearts came to life around the 20 minute mark, but were unable to make a spell of pressure count. Tony Sibbick was denied by Joe Hart after a fine strike as Hearts started to pile on the pressure after the attack fizzled out.

Zander Clark was then called to action making a huge save to stop Hatate as he darted into the box to keep his side in the tie. Josh Ginelly then threatened but his effort was fired high into the stands.

Celtic then dished out a killer blow as Kyogo’s cheeky back-heel doubled the lead and gave Neilson’s men with a mountain to climb.

Into the second half Hearts battled to try and make more a fist of the contest. Josh Ginnelly found himself in promising areas but was often a lone runner as the Jambos lacked a cutting edge. A few half chances came the way of the home side but it ultimately wasn’t enough. Cameron-Carter Vickers popped up with a header to pile on the misery as he put Celtic three up and sent Hearts out of the cup.

Here is three things we learned as Robbie Neilson suffered another sobering defeat against Celtic.
Sick of Celtic

Hearts have tried to go toe-to-toe with the best team in the country and it has proved to show a huge gap.

It was always going to be tough ask on Wednesday going into battle at Celtic Park. But they came out of that game with confidence that they could hit back at Tynecastle today.

Going down a goal within two minutes at home completely burst any feeling that this time would be different.

Hearts were slack and struggled to keep up with their Glasgow foes. Unlike the last time round they failed to lay a glove on the high-flying Hoops.

Ultimately it is two sobering defeats against a side streets ahead.
Missing man

Hearts were hit with injury woes ahead of this one but the biggest omission was undoubtedly Lawrence Shankland.

The stand in captain has been huge as a leader on the park as well as netting a record number of goals in years.

The last time they welcomed Celtic to Tynecastle he was the star man netting a hat-trick.

Hearts lacked a focal point and an out ball as they struggled in the final third.
Battling Qualities

At times it was backs to the wall stuff for Hearts as they struggled to deal with the speed of Celtic.

Andy Halliday can always be relied on to rise to the occasion and was up for the fight.

His work rate in the middle of the park got the crowd going.

Josh Ginelly can also walk off the pitch with his head held high as he chased every lost cause and tried to make things happen. But it ultimately wasn’t enough on the day.

Celtic made comfortable progress to the Scottish Cup semi-finals, knocking three goals past Hearts for the second time in four days.

Aaron Mooy crashed in an early opener and Kyogo Furuhashi added a fantastic flicked finish before the interval.

Cameron Carter-Vickers scored a header late in the game to underline Celtic’s superiority at Tynecastle.

A wonderful save from Joe Hart denied Toby Sibbick at 1-0, with the home side seldom threatening thereafter.

Hearts were last season’s runners-up but hopes of reaching a fourth final in five seasons looked bleak following a whirlwind start from Celtic, who have a domestic clean sweep in their sights.

Inside the first minute, Zander Clark needed to look lively to push away a shot from Reo Hatate. Sixty seconds later, the Hearts goalkeeper was picking the ball out of his net.

Jota slalomed down the right before finding the Australian with a cutback, which was steered high into the net first time from 14 yards.

Hearts, who had scored early in Wednesday’s league meeting at Celtic Park only to fall 3-1, rarely got out their own half in the opening 25 minutes, struggling to match the pace and purpose of the visitors.

However, it took a marvellous save from Hart to preserve Celtic’s lead as the 35-year-old made an instinctive sprawling stop to claw away Sibbick’s close-range shot on the swivel. Hart was then up swiftly to prevent James Hill reaching the loose ball.

Clark was busy again, keeping out another effort from Hatate and knocking away a follow-up with his feet, but he was powerless to prevent Kyogo cleverly steering in a drilled cross from Alistair Johnston just before half-time.

Once again, the livewire Japanese striker lost his markers to net his 26th goal of the season with a deft clip.

Hearts made a determined start to the second half, although Clark added to his tally of saves with a good block from Jota’s angled strike.

Without top-scorer Lawrence Shankland and midfield veteran Robert Snodgrass through injury, the Edinburgh side were short on guile and Celtic did not need to work too hard to keep them at bay.

Hatate thundered in a shot as Clark punched clear from a corner, with Hill making a crucial clearance, but the third goal arrived soon after as Carter-Vickers had the simple task of nodding in a curling free-kick from substitute Matt O’Riley.

Fast and furious start sets tone for Celtic – analysis

Ange Postecoglou’s side stamped their authority on the match from the first whistle, completely suffocating Hearts with wave after wave of high-tempo attacks.

Celtic’s impressive midfield trio had an immediate grip on proceedings, controlling large parts of the game even as the pace dropped in the second half.

Both first-half goals came from Celtic’s right flank, with Stephen Kingsley exposed too often as Jota and Johnston galloped forward at every opportunity. Jota then switched wings to torment Michael Smith.

Hearts, missing a few key players, will look back at Hart’s incredible save to deny Sibbick but Robbie Neilson’s men never really recovered from the loss of such an early strike and were guilty of switching off at the back for the other goals.

They were also rather predictable in their pursuit of a way back, knocking hopeful long balls in the direction of Josh Ginnelly.

Celtic scored five in the previous rounds against Morton and St Mirren and could easily have had a few more today as they made it 13 successive wins in all competitions.
What the managers said

Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson: “We were looking to press, go man-for-man. In the early stages you’re looking for more contact, make sure we don’t allow the ball to go by us.

“To lose a goal so early hit us but I thought the fans were outstanding. They kept an intensity about the place. We started to recover and to lose the goal right before half-time was a real blow for us.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We started well. We thought it was important, playing at Tynecastle with so much on the line, you need to get a grip of the game early.

“I thought the quality of our football early on was outstanding. We got a good goal and probably could have had a couple more. That set our stall for the rest of the game. For the most part, we controlled it.

“We’ve gone Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday, with two away from home. It’s been a good week.”

Celtic’s Alistair Johnston jumps on top of his team-mates following Cameron Carter-Vickers’ goal in the 3-0 win over Hearts.

Joe Hart: If you only have one moment as a keeper, it has to be made to count. The Englishman ensured that was so courtesy of a superb instinctive save down to his left from a Toby Sibbick effort at 1-0 that he somehow clawed out from practically behind him before blocking the follow up. 7

Alistair Johnston: Plays as if hewn from the Rockies in his Canadian homeland, so solid and stocky is the full-back. And unyielding, as he was in giving nothing up as his team came under a spell of pressure following their explosive start, all before provided the assist for the clincher second-goal just before the interval with a precision cross. 7

Carl Starfelt: A hip flexor issue in the warm-up, his manager Ange Postecoglou revealed afterwards, was behind the Swede not re-appearing following the interval. A composed presence until then. 6

Cameron Carter-Vickers: All in space for a simple header to make it 3-0 late on, the imposing defender ate any spaces, and opponents frankly, at the other end to starve the home side of threatening situations. One challenge proved all-too-meaty, though, as he picked a second-half yellow card. 7

Greg Taylor: Not as evident in the final third as he tends to be as a full-back at ease with the inverting asked of him, the Scotland international was competent and content in giving great concentration to his defensive duties. 6

Aaron Mooy: Like an unflustered gondolier in a storm, the Australian seemed to be able to take his time, with gracefulness, as his promptings ensured Hearts were buffeted every which way in a whirlwind start. After, that is, he opened the scoring with a deft finish two minutes in for a seventh goal action – three of these net-rippling moments – in only his past seven starts. 8

Callum McGregor: A technical fulcrum for his team, the Celtic captain can also be a tigerish ball-winner. He couldn’t have been any more of a dominant enforcer in Gorgie had he been welding a Magnum 45. 7

Reo Hatate: A little more on the fringes that his commanding midfielder compadres Mooy and McGregor after drawing a fine save from Zander Clark in the opening stages, he was still busy enough. 6

Jota: The Portuguese winger never just sold but bought and sold Kye Rowles courtesy of a corkscrew run down the right that allowed him to set up Mooy for the opener. His burrowing made him a constant menace for a Hearts backline that never seemed to have him under control. 8

Kyogo Furuhashi: A dinky back-flick from a Johnston low cross allowed him to kill the tie as a contest seconds before the end of the first period, and bag him a 26th goal of a campaign in which the striker has been irrepressible. 7

Sead Haksabanovic: Lively showings off the bench in recent encounters – coupled with an injury for Daizen Maeda – earned the Montengro international a first start of 2023. His impact on the left proved limited, though, and he gave way to Liel Abada on the hour. 5

Substitutes: Yuki Kobayashi (7) was a composed, assured presence after replacing the injured Starfelt at the break. Liel Abada (6) had a couple of glimpses at goal in his half-hour run-out. Matt O’Riley, Tomaki Iwata and Oh Hyeon-gyu (n/a) strolled through after being introduced for the closing stages.
