Trivia
- The first League game of the season. Despite only picking up 2 points from three League Cup games there was little sense of panic at Celtic Park with the prevailing belief that things would come right. On the Tuesday Jock Stein said that he would not name the team till just before kick off. As it was two changes were made with Steve Chalmers replacing Jimmy Johnstone at outside right and Gallacher replacing Bertie Auld at outside left.
- It was announced that the Jungle would disappear before the end of the season. The old corrugated tin enclosure would be pulled down to be replaced by a modern enclosure to be finished before the end of April. New dressing rooms, upgrading of main stand facilities and new car parking were also planned.
- Orjan Persson was sent off 12 minutes from the end after a foul on Gemmell and Munro was booked – an unhappy night for the Arabs.
Review
The team started to get it’s act together with a noticeably better performance. There was a far greater sense of directness about the play. Divers, who played well throughout the game, got the first goal from a McBride pass. It took till the second half to double the score with McBride shooting home. Lennox was pulled down in the area after picking up the ball and streaking away into the penalty area. Ian Young scored from the spot. Tommy Gemmell got the fourth with still 25 minutes to play with a 20 yard shot.
