Trivia
- The SFA gave notice that they were looking to allow substitution of players next season, possibly adopting the mode south of the border where this season substitution was allowed for an injured player. They also announced that they were planning to adopt a 16-12-12 team league setup but this still had to be passed by the 37 clubs in the League. Two teams would go down from the First Division and there would be no promotion.
- All the players were reported fit including John Cushley who had been ruled out of the Cup game against Stranraer with a leg knock. Stevie Chalmers and Bertie Auld were brought in with Charlie Gallacher and Bobby Lennox missing out.
- An icy slippery surface at Celtic Park.
- In the Combined Reserve League on the same day, Celtic Reserves were away to Clydebank Reserves and defeated them 4-0. The Celtic team was Martin, Young, Halpin, Cunningham, McCarron, Hay, Lennox, Connelly, J. Quinn, McGowan and Taylor. The Celtic scorers were J. Quinn 2, Connelly and Lennox.
Review
Bertie Auld bagged a brace on his return and Joe McBride a hatrick in this game. The Falkirk side did not take well to the surface and Celtic made the running from the start in their trainers. Falkirk played defensively from the start and showed a real reluctance to attack with Simpson a spectator in the Celtic goal. The Bhoys only led 1-0 at half time through a Bertie Auld goal but in the second half they ripped right into Falkirk. McBride got the second from a Chalmers pass. Then three goals followed in quick succession. Bertie Auld got his second after good work from Hughes; Hughes himself got the fourth from a Gemmell opening and McBride got his second and Celtic's fifth on 77 minutes. He got his hatrick just before the whistle.
