Trivia

  • During the week Celtic decided to seek entry of the Reserve team to Division 2. This caused a mini-ruckus and the chance for officialdom to ruffle it’s feathers and flap it’s wings. The decision to do so by the club was aimed at raising the standard and profile of Scottish football throughout.

Jock Stein said, “Our move is not motivated by selfish reasons. We feel that Scottish football needs a boost and we are confident that our having a team in the Second Division would help. For Mr Reid (SFA president) to complain about our decision to apply for entry to the Second Division strikes me as being a selfish attitude. It was only recent that Mr Reid was saying that Partick Thistle might have to do away with a reserve team and have only a pool of players. Where was his consideration for other clubs then? Our decision is not aimed at making life difficult for Partick Thistle, Clyde or any club. We want to help Scottish football and feel that our move would be of benefit to the game in Scotland.” He also stated that if the second team were to win promotion to the First Division they would not accept it. The League and the SFA turned down Celtic’s application.

  • Ex-Celt Malcolm MacDonald was sacked as manager of Kilmarnock on Tuesday 2nd April.
  • At the start of the week a sharp cold spell set in and snow fell throughout much of the country and heavily in Glasgow and Edinburgh on the Tuesday. The game at Aberdeen for the night of the 3rd was still on on the Tuesday but after a blizzard overnight was postponed on the Wednesday of the game. The same night Rangers drew 0-0 with Dundee Utd. and were now 1 point ahead of Celtic having played the same number of games.
  • Bertie Auld came out of hospital having had his damaged knee cartilage removed.
  • An unchanged team was announced for Tynecastle.
  • On the same day Celtic Reserves defeated Hearts Reserves 3-1 at Celtic Park. The scorers were McBride, Jim Clark and Quinn. The Celtic team was Fallon, Murray, Shevlane, John Clark, Connelly, O’Neill, Hay, McMahon, Quinn, McBride, Jim Clark. Sub Taggart.

Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis on the 4th April.

Review

Two great goals by Jimmy Johnstone and Bobby Lennox put Celtic in the driving seat in the first half and they resisted the Hearts pressure in the second. Jinky got the first when he surprisingly out-jumped the Hearts defenders to head home. Lennox got the second with a cool and careful lob o0ver the head of the keeper.
