Trivia
- The Scotland pool for the World Cup game against West Germany was announced. Seven Celts were picked – Gemmell, McNeill, Murdoch, Johnstone, Hughes, Lennox, Wallace.
- This was a Wednesday night game. Tommy Gemmell (who was now sporting an incipient moustache and subject to the jibes of all at Celtic!) was rested and in came Willie O'Neill – the standard reserve at full back. John Fallon played despite have a heavily bruised shoulder from the League Cup Final. (Ronnie Simpson was still recuperating with the reserves from his shoulder dislocation). Lennox who was suffering from a toe infection, played.
Review
Celtic started slowly but got the scoring off and running with a penalty scored by Willie Wallace after Johnstone was pulled down in the area. Harry Hood added to that with a cool shot after being set up by Wallace. Two goals up at the interval the game looked to be in the bag. However Falkirk, who were doing their best to avoid relegation, stepped up in the second half and Mclaughlin pounced on a Fallon error to pull one back. Falkirk's fightback was short-lived however despite pulling a further goal back and headers from Lennox and Wallace finished the game.
