- In the home internationals in May, Billy McNeill, Lou Macari, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Johnstone were in the Scotland party.
- Rangers had won the European Cup Winners Cup winning 3-2 against Dinamo Moscow in Barcelona with their fans running riot and causing an international incident. UEFA banned them from Europe for a year.
- A 16 strong Celtic party left for Bermuda on 29th May for what was essentially a 12 day holiday. Mr Fear-of-flying Jimmy Johnstone stayed home and Denis Connaghan also stayed in Scotland awaiting a knee operation. Pat McCluskey and Jim Brogan also travelled as well as those named for this game
- Crowd did not appreciate Celtic’s lackadaisical approach. They wanted goals and entertainment.
