- Jimmy Johnstone had picked up a leg strain coming on as a sub in the Hearts game but he recovered to take his place on the bench with Callaghan. Dixie Deans dropped out on the Friday with a leg strain picked up in training. In came Jimmy Bone. Bone was transfer listed and had turned down two offers of moves from Celtic. He had played in the Reserve game against Morton on the Tuesday. Ally Hunter was a victim of 'flu with Denis Connaghan back in goal.
- George Connelly played for the Reserves on the Tuesday night in a 7-1 win.
- Morton were now managed by a Dane Erik Sorensen, an ex-goalkeeper who had previously played for them and Rangers.

Review
Celtic narrowly won on a heavy pitch on a dark, glum, Greenock afternoon.
Their goal came from the game's best players Murray and Dalglish.Kenny played the ball into the area and Stevie scrambled it home. Not pretty but effective.
