Trivia
- First Old Firm Ne'erday game since 1969.
- An unchanged side for Celtic.
- Murray, who was attempting a comeback after retiring from persistent foot injuries, played neither in the Reserve or main game. Sean Fallon said that this was due to the heaviness of the grounds and not to some relapse.
- On the Tuesday before this game Celtic defeated Rangers 2-1 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Hunter, Gourlay, Baillie, Hannah, Aitken, Casey, McCluskey, Glavin, Hood, Burns, Wilson. Subs Ritchie and Innes. The Celtic scorers were Hood and O'Hara o.g.
Review
Rangers scored on the half hour when McLean swung over a cross from the right and Johnstone outjumped the Celtic defence to head home.
Celtic's defence always looked vulnerable at crosses although they should have equalised in the second half after Sean Fallon replaced his strikers Deans and Lennox with Hood and Wilson.
In the last part of the game Celtic went close on a number of occasions although Dalglish was well shackled by Hamilton first then O'Hara. Without Kenny's creativity Celtic found it hard going.
Remarkably, even with the loss, Celtic stayed top of the league. Now Rangers were snapping at the heels but their form looked as suspect as Celtic's. The attempt to make the league "more open" – ie. change the rules so that Celtic did not win it each year – looked to have succeeded.
