Coventry were also interested and had had McNamara watched in the Reserve game. McNamara turned the offers from both clubs down saying that he wished to remain full-time (Thistle were part-time). .

The Celtic scorers were Henderson 2, Hannah and McLaughlin.
- The sudden death of Frank Meechan at his home in Croy was announced. Celtic wore black arm bands and a 30 second silence was held pre-match as a mark of respect for the former Celt.

Celtic supporters enjoy a trip to the coast on a brilliant summer's day and enjoy a goal feast. Celtic now under Stein's leadership look set for a fine season.
Tommy Burns set up Dalglish for the opener when he ran onto a fine pass, rounded ex-Celt Marshall and side footed into an empty goal. Celtic continued to pile on the pressure but the single goal was all that separated the sides at half time.
In the second half Celtic stepped up a gear and took complete control. Glavin side-footed a cross from Wilson home for the second. Danny McGrain then scored a solo goal before Wilson scored from a Dalglish pass. Edvaldsson finished it off with a fifth with a header after George McCluskey had missed a penalty in the 68th minute.
