- Celtic play in their new umbro away strip for the first time. Green shirts with white collar, cuffs and white diamonds down the sleeve; white shorts with green diamonds down the side and green socks with white diamonds round the top.
- The 'flu bug hit in the prior week with sidelined players McGrain, Dowie and youngster Mark Reid all laid low and told not to report for training.
- Ronnie Glavin and Andy Lynch were both recovered from injuries but not considered match fit. Alfie Conn was out suspended having reached the new disciplinary points limit.
- New Scotland manager Jock Stein watches from the stand. He had just named his first Scotland squads for the upcoming international against Norway. There were no Celts in the senior side but Aitken and George McCluskey were selected for the U21s.
- Roy Baines put in a transfer request. He had been playing in the Reserves but was being asked to share duties to give newly arrived Packy Bonner, who showed great promise, a start. With no chance of displacing Latchford (at this time but Baines would soon get an opportunity), he submitted a transfer request.
- The Reserves continued their losing streak losing 3-2 to Morton at Cappielow with a team of Bonner, McGrain, Russell, Lumsden, Casey, Dowie, Doyle, McPhee, Weir, Reid (Ward), Godzik (Halpin). Reid and Halpin were the Celtic scorers.
- Billy McNeill took time to state that he didn't think that the Reserves were up to standard and there was a distinct lack of cover for certain positions.
