Celtic won deservedly on a cold frosty day despite a Dundee United late fight back to keep the pressure on league leaders Aberdeen.
Celtic adapted to the hard underfoot conditions with Provan and Sullivan being influential on Celtic's right flank.
The opening goal came when Tommy Burns made a fine diagonal run into the area on to a Dom Sullivan pass. He ran to the right hand bye line and whipped over a cross with his weaker right foot and McGarvey spectacularly adjusted his body to head powerfully past Hamish McAlpine.
McGarvey and Nicholas were now a magnificent partnership and a constant threat in front of goal and it was Nicholas who scored the second with an opportunist effort. McAlpine sent a poor goal kick out to Celtic's left and Burns cleverly headed the ball over the United defence catching them square. Nicholas was just onside and ran forward to delicately lob McAlpine for a superb goal.
After half time Celtic tired and United began to creep back in to the game. Substitute Ralph Milne caused trouble with his pace and he pulled a goal back in 82 minutes. Celtic panicked after this and it took some fine defending by McGrain and good handling by Bonner to see them through to the final whistle.
