BiogBlair, Dan - The Celtic Wiki

Dan Blair signed for Celtic in 1924 from junior side St Anthony’s and although he stayed at Parkhead for three years he only made a total of three appearances before being released in 1927.

He was “a wee one but tricky!” and it was said “I have seldom seen a young fellow with better judgement in his passes“.

Dan Blair – a forward – made his debut aged just 19 on 1st November 1924 in a 1-0 defeat at Morton.

Celtic actually lost all three games in which he played for the first team:a 1-0 loss to Morton, a 2-0 loss to Hamilton and a 3-2 loss to Hibernian, all away matches. This didn’t help his case although in season 1924/25 Celtic kept coming unstuck away from home with nine losses despite a strong record at home. Unluckily he didn’t get to play a league game in season 1925-26 when Celtic recovered on the field to win the league.

In the 2-0 defeat to Hamilton, it was said that:

“Celtic were like sheep without a shepherd”.

So, he didn’t manage to make the grade at Celtic. With the popular Tommy McInally returning to Celtic, it was unlikely that Dan Blair would fill in for Patsy Gallagher, and it was Tommy who took over from Patsy when he retired.

Dan Blair was once hailed as to become “the new McMenemy“, a high benchmark for any player to meet. It wasn’t to be.

He went on loan to Ayr Utd in Oct 1926, before moving to Glasgow Perthshire in 1927.
