Review
Celtic’s 7-1 victory over their arch-rivals Rangers in the 1957 Scottish League Cup final was one of the greatest moments in their history and in ‘Oh Hampden In The Sun’ the Celtic support have a wonderful book which really does do justice that truly unforgetable occasion.
The book obviously focuses on the amazing events at Hampden that bright October day but it is more than a mere recollection of those fantastic 90 minutes. Featuring extensive interviews with supporters, players and Celtic backroom staff, ‘Oh, Hampden…’ vividly recreates the world of the Celtic fan in the 1950s
Set against the backdrop of a rapidly post-war world this book paints this brave new world through the eyes of a Celtic support which was becoming all too familiar with failure. The stories told within the book are both frequently funny and moving as we learn the personal tales of those who followed the Hoops to Hampden.
‘Oh, Hampden…’ is in many ways a social history but ultimately all the tales and anecdotes lead to that amazing 7-1 rout. What the authors have done is told the story of an extraordinary game through the eyes of so-called ordinary people. In doing so they have produced one of the most evocative and sublime books about Celtic you could ever wish to read.
