Title: The Spirit of 86
Author: Andrew Reilly
Published: 2012
Synopsis
In a history of dramatic wins and stirring title challenges, few were as exciting for Celtic supporters as the climax to the 1985/86 season.
With 8 games to play, Celtic sat 9 points behind leaders Hearts and the club’s chances of retrieving the situation were written off by virtually everyone within the game.
This is the story of the final 8 games of the season and how it all came down to two football matches played on Saturday 3rd May, 1986.
Review
(by David Potter from Amazon.co.uk)
Not a bad little book at all, and well worth the price. The author deals well with a remarkable episode in Celtic history, stressing that it was indeed Celtic who won the League in 1986, not Hearts who threw it away (although, God knows. they did and how!).
I found myself recalling things about that season that I had forgotten – how good Maurice Johnston was (and how it hurts to say that!) in the run-in, and how Roy Aitken although able to “take the game by the scruff of the neck” did make mistakes, something that explains why we lost so many goals and collapsed predictably in Europe.
And of course that last day – how we all remember where we were!
The author makes a few mistakes – on page 23 he says Easter Road when he means to say Celtic Park, he is not good at dealing with apostrophes – it should be Hearts’, I think on page 32, and there is the appalling “had went” on page 3. Still, the writing has quality and we hope for a few more books from this quarter.
Well done, Andrew!
