Everton forward Alec Brady was another player the ambitious Celtic board were able to tempt to Glasgow in the early days of the club.

The Cathcart-born former Sunderland man moved back to his native Scotland in 1891 but his stay at Celtic Park was brief and after just one season he returned to England and joined Sheffield Wednesday. Disappointing when you look at his record, but the offers were in for the money down south and he was chasing it down.

His purchase was a major coup as prior to his signing, English clubs had poached/taken players from Scotland at will. Alec Brady was taken on with the great Dan Doyle to Glasgow, and he was described as “a wee barrel of a man“!

He was unarguably one of the best forwards in the whole country in reputation for that era.

He made his debut for the Bhoys on 15th August 1891 at Hearts as the Celts lost 3-1 in a league encounter.

However, despite his reputation, his goal scoring return in the league was low, and it was in the Scottish Cup that he made his name. He scored two goals in three successive rounds to take Celtic to the final (including a double v Rangers in a 5-3 win), and in the process helped Celtic to lift the Scottish Cup, Celtic’s first major senior trophy. Sadly, he didn’t score in the final, but having been key to Celtic in this momentous achievement, he deserves full praise.

Before his departure he had in total scored 10 goals in 24 league & Scottish Cup games. He also helped Celtic to win the Glasgow Cup (scoring in the final in a 7-1 win v Clyde) and the Glasgow Charity Cup (2-0 win over Rangers).

Alec Brady had the honour of winning the premier domestic Cup medals on both sides of the borders (i.e. the FA Cup & the Scottish Cup) to become one of the first to have done so, and this was at a time when these competitions were regarded as the pinnacle of the football world.

He passed away prematurely in Oct 1913, aged 43.
