Definition
‘Celtic Da’ is a humorous term referring to older Celtic fans who like to berate, badger and whinge about the younger elements in the support (especially the Green Brigade).
Mostly an online term, although it did become used heavily offline too, it was coined in around 2018 by the younger supporters who had become fed up of the constant bleating about the older Celtic days and often heavy handed complaints about their behaviour and actions.
Term is mostly directed at older social media members of the Celtic support, who have a knack for coming out heavily if any younger elements have become involved in or have created a new situation, for example following a display of a contentious banner or really just any flashpoints in general.
As with everything, it’s just tongue-in-cheek, and the term is really just banter between sections of the fans, but there is some justification. Younger element have been easy targets for the older fans (as has always been the case), especially those older fans who like to hark on about how easy the youth have had it with Celtic compared to their difficult supporting life back in the 1990s (like as if they had were ‘Nam veterans or the like).
Then again with the rise of the Green Brigade, there is a clash of cultures with light flares, sometimes confrontational banners and co-ordinated group football chants bringing a very different experience to that of older fans who are (despite their denials) becoming more conservative both politically and socially.
The term is jovial, and nothing more, just again highlights the humour of the grand support at Celtic. Only the most sensitive souls seem to have any issue with it.
Quotes
“I have been here since 2000 and in that time Celtic have won 14 league titles and I have played a part in ten of them. So I think I know how to win titles here.
“I think that gets overlooked. If we win the cup that will be my seventh cup and any time we lost the league that I have been involved in it was on the last day of the season.
“Since 20 years ago the only thing they (Celtic fans) have seen is success. They don’t remember the 1990s as the older generation do.
“I can’t take it for granted, they might. That comes from an immaturity from their point of view.
“In present-day football there is always a furore after one game, whether it be social media or phone-ins.
“I live in the real world. Social media is not the real world. I think it is poisonous myself, but good luck. “
