Report 1
The Scotsman – Monday, 15th April 1889, page 9
This match was played at Gourlay Park. The crowd was one of the largest that has assembled there. The Celtic chose to play with the wind, which blew pretty stiffly, and after twenty minutes' hard play scored the first goal. Cowlairs made several attempts at scoring, but shot wide at times. Cowlairs did not score up to half-time. On resuming with the wind in their favour, Cowlairs pressed, and gave Kelly quite enough to do. McCallum’s leg gave way, and he had to leave the field but, notwithstanding, the Celtic made several dangerous attacks. The home men were unfortunate in not scoring. The game throughout was hard.
Result – Celtic, one goal; Cowlairs, nothing.
Report 2
These teams met in a friendly match at Gourley Park. The Cowlairs set the ball in motion, and a minute after obtained a corner, which came to nothing. The Celts at this time were doing beautiful work, and but for the grand play of the half-backs, would have given Duff enough to do. From this, however, McCallum transferred, and, out of a scrimmage, Duff, with the ball in his arms, was hustled through amidst the wildest excitement.
At half-time the score, which pretty much represented the play, stood – Celtic 1; Cowlairs, 0.
On resuming, with the wind at their back, the Cowlairs at once became dangerous, and Kelly had to fist out three shots in quick succession. The remainder of the game was well contested, but there was no further scoring, and the result was – Celtic, 1 goal; Cowlairs, 0.
