Review

The Scotsman – Monday, 27th April 1891, page 5

Celtic v Third Lanark – On the Celtic Park. The Third kicked of, and in the first ten minutes had rather the best of the play. The Celts improved and after sixteen minutes scored the first goal. Andrew Thomson close on half-time had to leave the field, but all the same the Third’s play improved, and before the whistle blew they equalised through Wills, amidst tremendous cheering. Half-time :- Celtic, one goal; Third, one goal. On resumption of play the Third again took up the running strongly, and the Celts had a lively time. Soon the Celts bore them back, and some grand wing play was now shown by McMahon and Campbell, but without effect. Both teams strove hard to get the lead, but they seemed on a level regarding merit, and a most determined and equal game ended in a draw of one goal each.

  • Match Report

From a newspaper report from the time.

The Third at once took the ball up to Bell's goal with beautiful combination, and, within a few yards from the custodian, Johnstone, with an open goal, spoiled a sure chance by over-anxiety. The kick from goal was smartly followed up by the Celts, who hung too long on the ball, and allowed Smith to sweep down on them and return with a strong kick. A foul at the Celts' goal looked dangerous, but Kelly brought relief with a smart overhead kick, and the home team were were hard at work in attempting to lower Downie's charge. The ball ultimately rolled over the lines. The volunteers were again at it, but their shooting was not characterised by accuracy, McInnes at one time shooting very feebly. A free kick against the Third Lanark for an infringement of the rules ended in the ball being scrimmaged through the goal. Later on a pretty shot by Dowds was fisted out by Downie. Unfortunately for the Third, Thomson, who was in magnificent form, fell when turning for the ball, and twisted his bone. Towards the close of the first half the Volunteers, although handicapped, completely hemmed in the Celts, whose goal fell before a screw-kick taken near to the corner flag by McInnes. At half-time the teams stood equal – one goal each.
The visitors had the wind at their backs in the second half. Both custodians were smartly visited, and smartly averted the downfall of their goals. Campbell and McMahon were showing something like the form expected from them, but their shooting was faulty at times. McMahon tried Downie with a low shot, but the custodian, with an agile movement, tipped the ball out.
The result was a draw – one goal each.
