Northern Echo. Match played September 2 1892 MIDDLESBROUGH, 0; CELTIC, 2.
This was the first match to which the Middlesbrough team treated their supporters on their own ground, and their was an attendance of about 2,000 spectators.
Teams:– MIDDLESBROUGH. — Goal, Mackay; backs, Crone and McManus; half-backs, Roberts, Stott, and Bach; forwards; Lewis, Gibson, McKnight, Abraham, and Black. CELTIC.– Goal, Cullen; backs, Doyle and Reynolds; half-backs, Gallighan, Malley, and Dunbar; forwards, Murray, Blessington, Clifford, M.Dunbar, and Campbell.
His Worship the Mayor (Councillor C. Ephgrave) kicked off, and the game opened very quietly, the visitors having a slight advantage. Gibson and Lewis at length broke away, but were pulled up by Doyle, who relieved in grand fashion. After the home goal had been in danger, Middlesbrough again got down, and were awarded a free kick in close quarters, but Roberts sent over the cross-bar. Each goal was in turn attacked without effect. When the home team got well down Black put in a splendid screw, and Lewis, who received, narrowly missed scoring, the ball going just wide.
Then the Scotchmen got well to the front, and Mackay was called upon; but the home custodian was all there and repulsed the attack. A free kick for Roberts having handled looked like letting the visitors through, but again Mackay saved very cleverly. The homesters, however, failed to get the ball away, and a moment after the ball scraped under the cross-bar of the home goal. The homesters were the next to attack, but were driven back, and play ruled in midfield when half-time was announced. The home team were the first to attack on resuming, chiefly through the instrumentality of Black, but a bye was the only result. The visitors next attacked, but Blessington shot wide, and when they came back again Tom Bach played a splendid defensive game. Play from this point was not of interesting character, ruling mainly in the vicinity of the centre line, though Middlesbrough had the best of matters until the visitors made a determined effort, and Dunbar scored a second goal for the Scotchmen with a really splendid shot at 25 yards. The home team had the best of the following play, but no further score was made, and the game ended–
