Trivia

  • 3000 spectators attended this friendly match.
  • Doyle, Blessington and McMahon were missing from this friendly match, all three were playing for Scotland in a 2-2 draw with England, the game being played at Celic Park in front of a crowd of 45,107
  • Interesting note is that at the Scotland v England match, that match has the oldest (currently) known picture of Celtic Park, and there is a huge Union Jack flying in the background. Some history: this Union Jack was the new League Title Flag and was unfurled for the first time at this match. The flag was actually in GREEN! The Union Jack in green to celebrate Celtic’s title triumph.

Review

The Celts opened their tour by beating London Caledonians by 2 goals to 1.

The result is no indication of the character of the play, which was altogether in favour of the Celtic, who, but for reckless shooting, would have put on a tall score.

The Parkhead team meet Aston Villa next, and, as both are League Champions of their respective countries, the match is one of some significance.

Doyle, Blessington, and McMahon left Central Station to take part in this match, to win which the Celtic will exert themselves as they invariably do when there is any honour at stake.

Match Report

From a Newspaper Report at the time

Great interest was taken in the meeting of these teams, who decided their fixture on the Londoners’ ground at Caledonian Park.
The weather was far from seasonable, and the game was got through in a broiling sun, before 3000 spectators.
Winning the toss, the Caledonians kicked off with the sun at their backs. The Celts, however, returned the ball smartly, and from the outset the visiting team acted on the offensive.
Within the first few minutes the Caledonian goalkeeper was called upon to save a warm shot from Cassidy, while within ten minutes a couple of corners fell to the Celtic, from which, however, nothing came. Only occasionally after this did the Londoners look dangerous, but they prevented anything being registered against them until just on half-time, when the score was – Celtic, two goals: Caledonians, nil.
For the first few minutes in the second portion the London men did slightly better, and within five minutes of restarting Cullen was called upon to fist out a warm shot.
So far the visitors did not appear to be particularly exerting themselves, but they now woke up, and carrying the game into their opponents’ quarters, Madden terminated a short run with a shot at goal. The ball, however, went wide.
After this the Caledonians played up in much better style, and their form underwent a great improvement. Indeed they had hard luck on one or two occasions in not registering a point. The defence of Cullen, however, was excellent.
Result:- Celtic, two goals: Caledonians, one goal.
