Trivia

  • Heavy rain kept the crowd at Hampden Park down to a mere 8,000 but those who did turn up saw plenty of goals from the bhoys on the eve of their European tour of Hungary, Austria and Germany.
  • The Scotsman reports that Aberdeen have re-engaged the following players: Greig (goal); Colman, Hannah and Munro (backs); Brewster, J. Wylie, Wright and Chapman (half-backs); Soye, Walker, Main, W. Wylie, R. Archibald (Albion Rovers), Calvert, and McLeod (forwards). Low (half-back) and Travers (inside forward) of last season’s eleven have not yet been signed.
  • It is reported that the UVF landed 20 machine guns from a small coaster off the Down coast on Sunday and took them away in a convoy of cars to different locations.
  • Sir Edward Carson told an Express reporter that he had telegraphed to Belfast as follows: “Redouble your efforts, I have had no offers from the Government save the offers made in the House of Commons, and that amounts to nothing. We are just going to keep our powder dry, and prepare for the worst.”
  • Herald, 13 May, 1914: Glasgow Sheriff and a Motor Trap – Sheriff Boyd fined five motorists 5s [25p] each for exceeding the 20mph speed limit in Great Western Road between Devonshire Gardens and Whittinghame Gardens. The sheriff wondered why this part of the road was taken as a trap as cars speeded up to gather momentum to get up the hill. The sheriff thought that the road at Botanic Gardens and Great Western Terrace was more dangerous than the one chosen for the trap but said the rules were made to be taken seriously and his fine reflected the mild nature of the offence.

The Scotsman – Wednesday 13 May 1914

The final tie in the Glasgow Charity Cup competition was played at Hampden Park last night between Celtic and Third Lanark. Unfortunately the weather was wet, and the attendance did not exceed 8,000.

Third Lanark opened weakly. A goal was registered against them in eight minutes from the start, and within the first half-hour they were three goals to the bad, the scorers being Dodds, McColl, and McMenemy.

Play afterwards became more level, but though showing considerable improvement, Third Lanark failed to break down the strong Celtic defence, and the half-time score was:- Celtic, 3 goals; Third Lanark, 0.

In the second-half play was quiet for a time. Third Lanark several times raided the Celtic goal, but failed to score. Eventually McMaster at a second attempt beat Brownlie, who saved the first shot weakly.

After this Celtic had the better of the exchanges. Johnstone cleverly eluded the Third defence, and beat Brownlie, another goal by McMenemy following immediately.

Result:- Celtic 6 goals; Third Lanark, 0. The drawings amounted to £246, bringing the total for the competition to about £1,450.
