Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • This win, on the day that Hearts suffered their first defeat of the season, brings Celtic to within two points of the league leaders.
  • Facing Celtic this day was the famous name of Jimmy Riddell who had played for Rangers in their league winning team of 1912/13 and would go on to do so again in their 1917/18 championship winning side.
  • Also facing Celtic were two players who would go on to succeed in football management. Bob McGrory was moderately successful, but ex-Celt Paddy Travers would have two Scottish Cups to his name and one at the expense of his old bhoys.
  • The Glasgow Herald has photos of the Allied Squadrons bombarding the Dardanelles forts.

The Scotsman, Monday 22nd February, 1915. The first half of the game at Celtic Park, Glasgow, between the Celtic and Dumbarton was vigorously contested. Dumbarton put up a good fight, their front rank giving the home defence plenty of work to perform.

Fine play by Browning gave McColl an opening which he accepted, beating Hamilton with a great shot.

In the second half the Celtic did most of the attacking, but the visitors put up a great defence, and defied the best efforts of the Celtic forwards. Both teams were strong in defence, but the forwards were spasmodic in their cleverness. The attendance was about 7000.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday, 22nd February, 1915.
Celtic pressed at the start and a smart combined run ended in McColl scoring. Dumbarton retaliated vigorously, but their forwards lacked precision at goal. In the second half Celtic had much the best of it, but the visitors defended resolutely and prevented further scoring.
