Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • After 32 games played Hearts top the league on 55pts, with Celtic second on 54pts and Rangers in third on 43.
  • The Glasgow Herald’s Turf Correspondent, “White and Gold” keeps up the paper’s anti-football stance by refusing to equate the continuance of football by comparing it to the continuing racing calendar, quoting the Hon G Lampton’s view that the two sports have nothing in common. Adding "racing is without doubt the finest sport of all."
  • The Herald reports that the Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth had travelled to Newtonabbot to present Drummer Kenny, VC, with a gold crucifix bought by the people of that town where the drummer is currently in hospital.

The Glasgow Herald, Monday 8th March, 1915
The Hibernians were expected to follow up their draw with Heart of Midlothian and give Celtic a close run for points, but except for 10 minutes in the first half the visitors were outclassed. A trip to Gallagher enabled Dodds to open the scoring for Celtic, which was countered nicely by a point by Fleming. Thereafter Celtic took the game in hand, Browning and McAtee adding goals before the interval.

The second half was more one-sided, if not so prolific in goals, McMenemy headed past Allan from McAtee’s centre, and then added a fifth with the best shot of the match. The closing stages were of a farcical nature, as the home team, content with their long lead, resorted to tricky football, as enjoyable as it was unprofitable.

The Scotsman, Monday, 8th March 1915,
The Hibernian-Celtic game at Parkhead, Glasgow, witnessed by some 10,000 people, held out promise of being a good one, for though after twelve minutes’ play Dodds converted a penalty, Fleming equalised for the Hibernians ten minutes later. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards a fast cross from Browning struck Robertson’s (Hibernians) foot, and found the net. From that point really the Hibernians never recovered themselves. McAtee scored a third goal before the interval and in the second half McMenemy scored twice, the Celtic winning easily.
