Trivia

  • Celtic & World War One
  • The Glasgow Herald reports that Clyde attempted to emulate Celtic, who had won two games in the same day last season, but fall at the second hurdle at Cathkin Park. This curious set of circumstances was made necessary by the SFA's decision to refuse permission for week-night games, considered by them to be detrimental to the war effort. LINK
  • This match is Celtic's 62nd unbeaten League game and including Glasgow Cup wins in 1916 their 64th competitive game unbeaten.
  • The inquiry into the Carlingford Lough disaster of 1916 in which 94 lives were lost laid the blame for the accident on the Newry-owned steamer Retriever.
  • A bill was passed in the US House of Representatives making a 7 billion dollar loan avaiable to the government to allow them to loan £800,000,000 to the Allies.

The Glasgow Herald, April 16, 1917
CELTIC STILL UNBEATEN
The Easter Road officials did not make a serious attempt to clear their ground of a heavy snowfall until the players were due to appear, and what was expected to be the match of the season became instead a test of endurance, the elements supplying a rather too successful opposition. The Celts were slightly the better team, though the lead secured by Gallagher was often threatened in the closing stages, and Shaw, McNair, and Dodds had many anxious moments.
