Match report from The Scotsman, 26th April 1923
Ayr United played their last home Leaugue game of the season last night, when they had Celtic as opponents. With the chances that came their way in the first half, Ayr should have led at the interval. McKenzie, the inside left of the local team, had the best efforts of the game during this period, a raking shot from 20 yards range, striking the cross-bar with great force, and going behind. The second half was as keenly contested as the first, and the 5000 spectators were kept interested to the close. Cassidy, who led the visitors, and his two inside men, tried every means they knew to circumvent the Ayr defence, but so well did the latter play a draw seemed certain. Five minutes from the close, however, McLean lobbed in a high ball from the left, and before Nisbet could clear, Cassidy touched the ball with his head, into the net. Within the next few minutes, McLean, on the Ayr left, was presented with two openings, and had he steadied a little ought to have equalised. It was a ding-dong encounter throughout, in which the respective defences were seen at their best. W. McStay and Cringan on the Celtic side, and McCloy and McLeod on the Ayr lot, put up a great display. Celtic missed the services of Connolly, his place being taken by Thomson on the left, and this was the weak link in the team. On the run of play Celtic were distinctly lucky to take both points.
