Match report from The Scotsman, 20th August 1923

NARROW WIN FOR CELTIC

A highly interesting and keenly fought game was witnessed at Celtic Park, where Celtic just managed to get the better of Falkirk. There were 15,000 spectators present, and the play in the first half contained many thrills. Celtic’s forwards moved in better style, and in thirteen minutes Cassidy scored a beautiful goal from 18 yards’ range. Falkirk tried hard after this to draw level, but the finishing of the forwards was poor, and Shaw had very few dangerous shots to Clear. Near the interval clever play by the Celtic right wing resulted in Cassidy heading a second goal from McAtee’s cross. Heavy rain fell during the second half, in which Falkirk did most of the attacking, but Patton in centre was too slow and lost several good chances. Ultimately Dougall sent the ball across the goal, and McNair, rushing in, headed the ball past Shaw into the net. Falkirk’s defender’s all played well, but in a poor forward line Puddefoot and Glancy were best.

The Glasgow Herald – Aug 20, 1923

Celtic played a good game from the start, scoring both goals in the first half. The first was scored by Cassidy. The home side continued to press,  and the second goal was secured by the centre from a cross by McAtee. Falkirk then became active, and attacked the Celtic’s goal vigorously, but they failed to break down the sound defence. In the second half the visitors showed to better advantage and after 20 minutes’ play McNair headed past Shaw. Falkirk played strongly to the finish but without further scoring.
