Match report from The Scotsman, 24th September 1923

AYR UNITED'S GREAT RECOVERY
Ayr United scored a meritorious victory over the Celtic at Ayr in a game which was fought out on keen lines, and was interesting throughout. The Celtic had two goals in five minutes, McAtee scoring from a shot which deceived Nisbet and rolled only a foot over the line, and Gallacher putting on the second from twelve yards' range. It looked as if the United were in for another reverse, but they kept swinging the ball from wing to wing with such purpose that they completely nonplussed the visitors' defence. Following a sparkling cross from McLean, Hilley only partly cleared, and, the ball going out to Hogg, the last-named drove it into the corner of the net. In the next few minutes the United drew level, McKenzie scoring from a free kick just outside the penalty area. After the Celtic had looked like once more taking the lead, the Ayr forwards broke away, and Cunningham put his side ahead. The second half was not nearly so exciting, although there were plenty of hard knocks going. Twenty minutes after the re-start, Ayr United broke away, and Cunningham, who had foced a corner off Hilley, had the satisfaction of scoring from the kick. Ayr were worthy winners. They gave a greatly improved display forward. The Celtic defence was shaky at times. The attendance came to about 8000.
