Nature was in fickle mood at Douglas Park, Hamilton. It was cold – bitterly cold – and at kick-off time there were signs of a blizzard coming. The ground, which had been cleared of snow during the morning, was soft and heavy. Callachan came in at the back, where McStay usually plays, the internationalist being still a sufferer from the eye injury he received against Queen of the South.
Celtic found luck with them in the turn of the coin, and pitted Hamilton to play in the blizzard, now at full blast. They made light of it, however, and the Celtic defenders were kept somewhat busy, though it could not be said that the Hamilton aggressive got past the menace stage. Good football was well nigh impossible on the ground, which was churning up as the game progressed.
Luck came Celtic’s way mainly due to the nature of the footing. The ball was lashed ahead, and the Hamilton backs found it going so badly for them that they couldn’t clear properly. That allowed McLean in, unmarked, and the winger drew first blood just four minutes after the start.
Crafty play by Gibson, with which he beat three Celtic players, roused the hopes of the Accies, but Callachan, with a mighty bound, burst in upon the move at the moment when danger threatened, and kicked away.
At this stage, the play of both sides bore a sharp contrast, Academicals relied on lusty kicking and quick following-up, while Celtic endeavoured to make headway by their usual subtle combined play, which, despite the bad conditions, seemed to pay.
A shot by McGrory looked like finding it’s mark, but Binnie sprang across his goal and kicked clear. Some rousing play by the Accies forwards followed. Borrowing a leaf out of Celtic’s book, Hunt sent his pack away in full cry.
Moffat side-stepped Hilley, squared a cross and the ball was retarded by the wind sufficient for Kelly to take a pot-shot at the Celtic goal. The ball sailed out of Shevlin’s reach and found itself in the net.
Fifteen minutes had gone. Here was just such a situation as the spectators most desired. There was now no impression that Celtic would enjoy a runaway victory, an impression, let it be said, that their play prior to Kelly’s goal established.
It was then that Celtic eschewed ornate stuff and went in for the methods adopted by their opponents. Hilley, in clearing a ball, was forced well into Hamilton territory ere he could part with it. A high ball, placed in front of Binnie’s goal, was deftly headed home by McGrory.
Subsequently play reached a high standard at times, and it was not confined to one side. A particularly fine movement by Thomson and Connolly so bewilderingly fast and subtle that the pair quickly found themselves right at Binnie’s door, but Thomson spoiled all by a faulty shot. Hunt and Gibson stood out above their fellows.
